Never More 2023 from Ex Novo Brewing. Barrel-aged black barleywine with whole cocoa beans & smoked figs. Comes in at 12.1% ABV. Really nice!

The nose is full of caramel, figs, vanilla, chocolate, and a bit of maple. Some pear comes through as well.

The taste is really interesting. The smoked figs REALLY come through here. Super interesting for a barleywine. Roasted malts, honey, burnt toffee, bourbon, vanilla, and some tobacco. Coffee also pokes its head through.

Very nice overall. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a dry and slightly smokey aftertaste.

    MobCraft - Barrel Aged Barleywine

Not familiar with this brewery but this is pretty good. Strong barrel presence but not striking me as boozy. It’s not lasting as long as it probably should.

...I was actually planning on making today my second 'one or none' beer day this week (my original concept was more like once per week or month or...)...anyway, some old neighbors of ours who now live in Aiken, SC arranged to have a crowler of Phantom Canyon 30th anniversary barleywine dropped off on our porch by one of their sons (they clued us in by calling us to let us know that it had arrived)...I am totally appreciative of this belated birthday gift (they thought today was my birthday - yesterday was)...naturally, in the spirit of gratitude and beer lust, this one is going down the hatch tonight...

...it did surprise me...our old neighbors Don and Mary are good people...Don and I especially wound up connecting over things like beer, music, smoking meats, and just having a general compatibility...both Mrs. BeerGoot and I miss 'em...we do hope to visit them later this year (part of that trip is also me wanting to visit the USS Laffey - an old WWII Sumner class destroyer like my dad served on in the Pacific - USS DeHaven)...but, yes, good friends, good food and beer in South Carolina...sounds promising to the Mrs. and me...

This strong ale isn't very barleywine-y, hope this years host is ok with that :grimacing: Broder Rusche from Free Will is a blend of strong ales including Dystopias, quad, and imperial stout aged in a variety of barrels.

While I am firmly in the fuck wax camp, I have to say that the black wax with gold flecks contrasting with the gold and black label is a very attractive package.

This is a unique beast, I get strong chocolate liqueur along with raisins and brown sugar up front. There is a bit of a jammy, cherry/raspberry note as well that gets a good deal more potent at the finish. There are other subtleties here but I'm too lazy to name them. This great and I'm thoroughly enjoying this. If I was doing the blending though I'd go with a bit more stout and a bit less quad.

This is splendid. A little hot, but the toffee/butterscotch goodness we all crave. I get weird about aging cans (idk why) so I wish they bottled it and I would get a bunch to check in on periodically. I bet this is really good with a couple years on it
