Full thoughts on this little beauty over in NBW...condensed thoughts, see below. Tonewood works with a local NJ malster quite a bit and this one features 4 local malts that really shine.

Long story short, great malt richness lighter woody smoke melds perfectly with this one; despite the rich malt presence this thing goes down as clean and light as can be, nicely balanced light hop presence on the finish.

It’s been a while since I’ve had it. I remember liking it, absolutely, but I don’t have a recent frame of reference. How does it change over time? Does the smoke mellow out, or different notes emerge? And what’s the sweet spot—assuming there is one?

Id love to try this. According to my painstaking record keeping, Stands to Reason was my favourite beer of 2023.

Agree with you on Glimmen. Back in November I discovered a couple cans in the singles section of one of my favorite stores so I bought both. I hadn't even realized that Schilling distributed to Michigan. Looking at their website beer finder it looks like one store in the Detroit area is listed with an account. Can't explain how these beers showed up 125 miles away but I'm glad they did. It pays to peruse the shelves when shopping for something else.

appreciate the tag @zid, and actually drank a can a bit earlier today…have you had anything from Godspeed, which actually kicked off this thread: they seldomly distribute stateside/believe they approached this in the past per batch variation

…on the other hand, always value Chris’ hard/controversial take -

...what gets more convoluted is how Anna & July view these styles, which I won’t dive into here

So... the smoke subsides a bit and becomes better integrated into the flavor profile. The porter flavor components also soften a bit, but at the same time the flavors become sharper and more up front/pronounced. Drinkability is fantastic. You feel like you could easily drink several pints without any difficulty.

The Marzen is very good, too, it's just a little more jarring in the juxtapose between the fresh sweetness of the base beer and the smoke versus the bigger base complexity of the Urbock base.

I had a very similar "first" experience. First sip--"This is really odd." Second sip--"You know, this might actually work." Third sip--"Whoever came up with this is either a genius mad scientist or a lucky crazy person."

Not that I can recall, but knowing this makes me even more excited to try the can of Sensate you sent me

I have never had a smoky beer from Godspeed, but I've had Sklepník - their pitch-lined Urquell collaboration. I wish they toned down the hop character of that beer... unless that character was a result of the pitch contact rather than hops.

Would you mind sending me a PM with a link to the Anna & July viewpoint (whoever or whatever that is)?

... or maybe it's simply an unavoidable (at the time) product of the malting/brewing process.

I had a great smoked Helles from my neighborhood brewery Sherman Street Beer Company in Allentown, PA.

The nose was light on smokiness, but the smoke really became assertive when it came to the flavor profile. The sweetness of the malt blended well with the smoke and the body was hearty enough to carry the smokiness.

As usual, high marks for another excellent lager from Beau and the crew at Sherman Street.

I hesitated to post this because Switchback Brewery's distribution is pretty limited, but if you can get it they have a grodziskie called Katie's Love Poem, which I think is incredible. It's surprisingly full-bodied for 3.2% ABV wheat base and its got a perfect moderate smoke. I wish I picked up more than a 4-pack while I was in VT.

Enegren Brewing makes a beer called The Big Meat . Been thinking of sending them a Cease and Desist . Anyone in Southern California that likes smoked beer should seek it out

New one for me. Weiherer Rauch from Brauerei Kundmüller on tap at Tommyknocker Helsinki Craft Beer Bar. Light on the smoke, a bit tart, and very refreshing!

Enjoying a lovely Erle from Aecht Schlenkerla. This beer has a strong smoke character which gives impressions of heavily smoked summer sausage and smoked salami. It has some very mellow notes of carbon flavor and a touch of cocoa in the aftertaste. It drinks wonderfully smooth and it is very enjoyable. This is a new beer to me from a brewery that has provided consistently good results in the past. The label states that this is a "SCHWARZBIER MIT ERLENRAUCHMALZ" and the Schwarzbier base style does shine through the pleasant smoke.
