This was easy to find last year, a bit more scarce this year. Weird how it goes. Fantastic though, actually liked it more than other years upon release.

More barleywine coming from @Beersnake1 so it's time to have the last one from our previous exchange. Lumberbeard's Anniversary Ale Year 3. A blend of 3, 2, and 1 year BA barleywine packaged January 2023.

This is surprisingly approachable considering its massive 16.8% abv. There is tons of caramel and burned brown sugar here and the barrel notes are extremely smooth and very well incorporated. I also get a little raisin and a hint of grape pixie dust. Maybe some marshmallow or coconut as well? Not a lot of layers here I guess but this is yummy.

Tree House: Tree of Fortitude. This is like butterscotch pudding. It’s aged in rum barrels for 14-24 months and has coconut, lime and vanilla. I honestly don’t get much of any except a little vanilla and very slight coconut on the finish. I like that Tree House is very light handed with all their adjuncts unless stated otherwise. Very full feel (thiccc) and almost no carbonation. This is the definition of a sipper

I agree, TH uses some strange ingredients but they use them incredibly well. They should probably steer clear of the dead end street that is IPA and focus on odd but awesome barleywine.

Lol as their ordering page currently has about 50 IPA offerings. You should see their brew tank setup. They have at least $10m worth of tanks at the Charlton location alone. If you can ever make your way out, go for it (unless you already have).

6th Anniversary Ale from Wallenpaupack in PA. I have loved every beer I've had from this brewery, but I've never tried an English barleywine from them! Huge thanks to @DIM for sending this in our barleywine trade.

Poured at approximately fridge temp. Might be slightly warmer as it just arrived from @DIM today. Pours a nice reddish brown with almost white head. The nose is toffee, bread, maple candy, pear, slight apple, and nice malts.

The taste is really nice. So smooth. It's so nice to have a straight up English barleywine without any adjuncts or barrel aging. Toffee, grainy bread, wheat, grass, clove, raisins, and biscuits. Super smooth and drinkable. Very much enjoying this one.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, with a very subtle sweetness on the aftertaste. Thanks again, Dan!

lol yeah I was being wistfully facetious. IPA bought them Bugattis, barleywine bought them air fresheners for the Bugattis. I'm just glad they bother with barleywines at all. Thanks again for Fortitude, really looking forward to Gilded Grove.

Haven't been yet but we've driven past the Charlton location a few times. One day.

Pryes - Drops of Time, rye whiskey/bourbon barrel aged barleywine
Strong butterscotch, caramel, and some barrel right up front but actually seemed like it fell apart as it warmed up a bit. Still, I bet I do it again.

Enjoyed another Old Ale from Bells this evening. Fun fact: in spite of its name, this is a barleywine not an old ale.

Buttonwoods Old 138 “old world barley wine”

10.5% ABV. This beer was conditioned with brett and aged for 18 months. Is there a beer type that’s more of a no-brainer for me to buy than a brett barley wine? Wish they weren’t so uncommon.

No gushing. Fantastic Swiss cheese holes head. Boy, the snap crackle pop of it is super loud. Might be the loudest head I’ve heard. Was surprised to see how tan it was too. This is a really dark beer.

The aroma immediately tells me that the brett presence is not little. It’s pretty heavy handed. There’s a strong fruity cherry acidity. Earthy and funky. Prickly and not heavy bodied. Angular beer and a bit challenging.

    Thanks @Rug
