Beer Abbreviations

But I’m sure new acronyms and abbreviations have come up. I’ll chime in with NBS = New Beer Sunday, the precursor to New Beer Weekend weekly thread (NBW)

 

Here’s another grammatical pet peeve.

Acronyms are only those abbreviations that are pronounced as words—think NASA, FOMO, etc. Abbreviations is the catch-all term that describes any shorter form (acronym, initialism, etc.) of a term or phrase.

Having gotten that piece of housekeeping out of the way, the one that comes to mind is WBAYDN (what beer are you drinking now), which replaced LNBA (late night Beer Advocate).

To be fair it was a decade ago. Would a running list of terminology help? Sometimes I get confused—does BA mean barrel aged, or am I talking about Beer Advocate? Or the Brewers Association? FFF vs 3F? IBUs, BLTs, ETC.

 

I don’t know why that one bugs me so much. I think most people use “acronym” because it’s shorter. It’s kind of ironic that “abbreviation” is a relatively big word.
