From the cellar tonight - picked up in Portland OR in 2011 during a memorable beer tour with friends. Honestly never understood what this beer style was all about - but wow am I’m blown away tonight. Adambier - essentially a high abv Dortmund style beer - aged in wood - slightly sour - malty/earthy. Absolutely stunning. Unfortunately in my rabbit hole research tonight I learned that HotD brewery is closing and there will be no more Adam. Anybody ever try this style ? Or Adam in particular?

Adam is a great beer, but I don't think it's a separate style.

I always thought it was just an Old Ale

Why not? A strong, Dortmund barrel aged ale-seems different enough to warrant its own category.

From what I've read, the traditional Adambier wouldn't necessary resemble HotD Adam. Doesn't mean it's not a great beer.

Maybe @patto1ro can weigh in? I know it's not a British beer, but he's done some stuff on continental styles.

Unfortunately Hair of the Dog already did close, in 2022. I made a pilgrimage to Portland finally when Alan Sprints announced he was retiring and shutting down the brewery. Adam is one of my favorite beers, I still have a few bottles in the cellar.

The "style" topic of Adambier came up in discussion last week in the Old Ale thread:

Sure, yes, but not at 10x the price of Adam.

    Awful dark for a Dortmunder.

Based on Ron Pattinson's article, I see it is a style once brewed in Dortmund (brewed long before lager was discovered), but not necessarily a "Dortmunder," per se.

Adam was awesome, but as others have pointed out I think it was an old ale. And I believe when it was available it was priced at like $4.50/bottle and was easy to find at most good grocery stores and bottle shops. I’d have bought a case if I knew it was going to go away.

Check the HotD website. They're still selling beer, not sure what's available.

BBA Stouts are different enough too. And Milkshake Sours. Or perhaps one called Add-junk. No end of the possibilities, but we already have more than enough styles.

I did, before my previous post—they have a lot of stuff (about 35 different listings) but I didn’t see regular Adam. They do have 2015 “Adam from the Stone” at $4/bottle, that’s probably the closest thing available.

I opened a bottle of Matt the other day — which I think I read somewhere is Adam aged in bourbon and apple eau-de-vie barrels. (I know the barrels are right, but couldn’t quickly find confirmation that Adam was the base.) At any rate, it had great malt depth on top of the barrel complexity, a hint of Flanders-like vinegar and moderate smoke. Sounds like something you might enjoy. :beers:

2019 Matt is available for sale at $20/bottle—can probably also be found at beer shops across the country that have respectable cellars (I occasionally check Bottleworks here in Seattle as they are known to pull out vintage bottles for sale). As with other HOTD beers, the vintage matters. My review of a 2010 bottle of Matt indicates that it was completely flat, zero carbonation. I’ve had the same issue with other HOTD beers, which is why I grew increasingly hesitant to buy them—they’re like Forrest Gump’s “box of chocolates” analogy about life. I don’t know whether there are any problems with 2019 Matt.

With most the vintage beers they are still selling - if you click on the detailed beer decription they say what the carbonation level is (none, mild, medium, etc) and aging status is for that batch.
