I will be staying in Craftsbury VT (20 mins from hill farmstead) for 2 days in August on a Wednesday and a Thursday. Im looking for more family activities to fill gaps in our stay. Will be with wife and two kids age 3 and 6. I will be visiting hill farmstead both days. I did it two years ago and its a good strategy to get all they have to offer. One day I do the bottle pour saisons and stouts. the other day I do the hoppy offerings after a poetica mug. It takes 2 days to take in all they have to offer. Besides that I have a visit to some general stores on the schedule - willys and the genny. I have dinner at parker pie on wednesday, and dinner at blackbird bistro on thursday. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations in the general area to fill gaps. My kid is too young for intense hikes and river tubing stuff unfortunately. But if anyone has any recs please share. thanks!

The town of Greensboro has a beach on Caspian Lake. I have only visited the Craftsbury Outdoor Center for xc skiing, and they are more geared to organized sports than casual recreation, but they might be worth checking out. The terrain around HF is not mountainous so hiking and biking is pretty mellow - except for the abundant swampy areas. Lake Willoughby is not too far and would make for a pretty scenic drive; views from the north end of the lake are especially good, and there is a beach there.

The Barr Hill Nature area in Greensboro has a kid-friendly hike that loops the property and has some great views of the Green Mountains. Highly recommended for young legs. Also, summer means ice cream. Tootsie's Ice Cream in Walden has my favorite maple creemee in the area, but Smith's in Greensboro is also great. For something different, but totally awesome, try the herbal ice cream at Wilson Farm in Greensboro.

If the stars align and your trip overlaps with 2024 Circus Smirkus - it's fun for the whole family and I would highly recommend - https://www.smirkus.org/

Don't forget the Museum of Every Day Life, maybe 10 minutes away? out on Route 16 in Glover! I've never been but only because I've never been high enough that early in the day.

Also Bread & Puppet is around the corner too on 122 in Glover. Not sure if kids would be into it, but still a pretty cool place not far away.

Lake Willoughby's north beach is a great day spot for families.
Hardwick has a nice little downtown with lots of little shops to pop in and out of.
Burtt's Apple Orchard in Cabot is a good little stop as well

After years of driving past it, i finally stopped in to see what it's all about this past fall. It's mostly weird little esoteric, and loosely curated, collections of every day objects, like tooth brushes, shopping lists, student dissection scissors, dirty little lenticular matchbook covers, and razors. It definitely requires a curiosity for the mundane and yes, being high would certainly help.

A trip to Jay peak might be worth looking into.. I'm not sure what their summer schedule is like but they do have a tram lift to the summit. All the scenic benefits of a hike with none of the effort. It's a fun little ride, but I don't know if it's open mid week during the summer. They also have an indoor water part there but I don't know if it's open during the summer at all. Definitely check their website, or call, to get details.

Jay Peak if the weather is good. There is a big indoor water park among other stuff. However, I attended a wedding there a few years ago in mid-June and it was 35F and raining sideways (it was moved indoors). Normally, it's a lot nicer though.

Lake Willoughby is one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast. It starts pretty shallow so it’s good for little kids.

Yeah, Em’s aunt has a house there off the lake. The beach is great for kids and my daughter loved it, and she was only 4 when she first went. I have video(audio basically) of us sitting out at night drinking hill farmstead and listening to the moose down by the creek next to us mooing/grunting or whatever the f$ck moose do. It was epic each night. Something to do while others were asleep. Can’t beat the stars and low light pollution there. That general store is loaded with good beer at the bottom of the hill by the lake too
