BOE remains a standout Barleywine in the SoBay/Los Angeles BA Scene and moreso now that El Segundo has gone in the shitter, with BOB2.5 being the exception, since that awful switch to 16oz cans.
The *extremely* limited Single Barrel Silver Wax one i sent you is one of my all time favorites .
When i had their 6 year verticle it was the star of the show! Glad i was able to send you one, i know i sent another one to someone but cant remember who!

Enjoying Edmund's Oast Beekeeper's Reserve courtesy of former BA @BMBCLT from a trade a year ago. Figs and raisins dominate with the barrel in the background and balancing the honey. Solid beer! 4.02 overall score.
    Cheers!

Rye barrel-aged Orange Giant from Ecliptic Brewing in Portland. Compliments of the amazing @DIM . This one got a bit lost in the beer fridge!

2021 bottle. Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark red/brown with almost white head. The nose is full of toffee and rye. Some dark fruit, A lot of apricot and bread. Big malts and booze!

The taste is super intense and awesome. Rye is super dominant. Boozy as heck. Dark bread, apple, pepper, figs, and toffee. Some hop bitterness mixes in nicely. Overall, a wonderful barleywine.

Thanks for sending this one, Dan!

Funny, I found one of those hiding behind some other bottles the recently. Think I'll let it sit another year or so. Glad you liked it Tim!

2023 Nebula aged in Basil Hayden barrels. Candy sweet malt/barrel and booze - aromatic - flavors amplified and over the top. These guys can be inconsistent but when they hit - they hit big. My favorite Barleywine so far in 24.

...I'm pretty sure this is my first Japanese barleywine...

Pours out a clear, golden color; dense, slow-rising carbonation; thick, frothy, long-lasting head; sticky rings and fingers of foam cling to the glass. Intense, pleasurable aroma of sweet grainy malts and spicy hop tones; a rich, fruity sweetness also punctuates the smell. Bold note of classic English-style barleywine; deep caramel elements with faint hints of ginger and cinnamon spiciness; molasses; rounded alcohol edge sleeping in the depths of the malt sweetness; honey. Heavy body; warm booziness cuts through the fairly dense residual sugars; sticky.

This Japanese barleywine is heady and bold in character and taste, boozy yet balanced, and a wonderful cold weather sipper while a wood fire burns in the background.

Nice pic! Looks pretty tasty assuming you drank it before it got too cold. Personally I kind of like the 8.5 ounce cans, I get them often from Hoppin’ Frog with their huge barrel aged beers. When drinking alone they’re fine, cost a bit less naturally, and keep me from over-indulging if I don’t want to get too far along. For the really big beers 8.5 ounces is fine much of the time, but sometimes I agree, you need to pour two!

This one is a blend of BA Stouts and BA Barleywines from Westbrook. Extra points for proper glassware and weather. Side note, how does everyone get their pics larger? Mine look tiny

Ditched work. Upon arrival I learned they’ll have wheated whiskey, brandy, and 7 year bourbon versions on Monday. That all sounds fantastic except that today is most calendarly not Monday.
The smell of hoppy wort up in this place was fantastic. I am overdue to brew.

This one was sent to me by @sulldaddy in the recent barleywine/stout BIF! Sigil XIII from Bissel Brothers in Maine. A blend of stout and barleywine aged for 22-29 months in bourbon, rum, and rye barrels. Comes in at 14.7% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a thick black with almost no head. The nose is insanely good. In fact, it's efffing amazing! I quickly pick up on barleywine, but must say the stout is a bit in the background. Interesting as I often think the opposite when it comes to these blends. I definitely get rum and bourbon, with chocolate, toffee, figs, pie crust, prunes, slight pipe tobacco, dark roast coffee, and a nice layer of maple. Damn this smells good.

The taste hits it out of the park as well! Wow. Maple, bourbon, black licorice, sweet toffee soaked in rum, rye, oak, dark bread, fig newtons, and some roasted malts. This is incredibly intense and VERY barrel forward. Mixes perfectly. This is now my favorite barleywine/stout blend by far.

The mouthfeel is thick and viscous. Aftertaste is toffee, bourbon, and rum. Thanks, Chris!!!

Got this as an extra from the very generous @maximum12 thank you! 2015 Central Waters BA barleywine, a longtime favorite of mine that is no longer distributed here.

Pretty much flat at almost 9 years out, but the body is still silky smooth. There is more char to the caramel than I recall and a fairly intense molasses note that is new as well. The booze is plentiful and intense, love it. While this might be on the decline it is still extremely enjoyable. Glad to have tried this.
