Some good local BA barleywine. Need to get out to this place. Still haven’t seen any more of their stuff around since I bought this last year. The BA stout is money, too.

Wondering if anybody in the New England area is going to tonight’s Cambridge Brewing Co’s Barleywine fest? Haven’t been to the venerable CBC in years - I think it’s the last original 80’s Boston area brewpubs still operating which is no small feat. Like the Stones latest tour (never ever say last) - I’m as interested to go for the nostalgia and to pay my respects to an old warhorse as I am to hear the music/drink the beer. Got a reservation and a designated driver - pretty excited.

Huge thanks to @DIM for this one! Reflections of Reality from Forest & Main brewing in PA. Barleywine aged for 11 months in Heaven Hill barrels. Comes in at 12% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown with a bit of off-white head. The nose is amazing! Full of malts, bourbon-soaked toffee, figs, plums, vanilla, slight graham cracker.

The taste is outstanding. Loads of toffee right away! A touch of leather, oak, plum, pear, fig, bread, honey, and bourbon. This is not harsh at all, nor is it boozy. Mild sweetness. Just a perfect balance of flavors right here.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with an aftertaste of bourbon and toffee. Overall a wonderful beer! Thanks, Dan!! So glad I got to try this!

Joining @Beersnake1 with Reflections of Reality from Forest and Main. I find this label art... unsettling somehow. The eyes on that little girl in particular are just very disturbing.

It isn't pretty with a muddy light brown body and amber at the edges. Nice lacing as the head recedes though.

There is a lot going on here, butterscotch and spiced fig cakes come to mind immediately. There is also some tobacco, sweet roasted nuts, toffee, sugary pears, and other fruits. The barrels add light oak, plenty of vanilla, and a wonderful bourbon blanket covering everything. The body is smooth and silky. Good stuff, this is disappearing quickly. Ditch the fancy wax bottles and I'd buy some packs for sure.

Nice write-up as always Tim, glad you liked it! Edge of Time next week?

Fun festival at CBC tonight - a true Cambridge community event w/ lots of friends and regulars coming out to celebrate this Kendall Sq brewing institution. Amazing selection of Barleywines w/ a big variety of barrel treatments. My BIS was the 2014 Weller Blunderbus - clean/classic bourbon/toffee and dark fruits. Unfortunately the Pretty Things Ale Project guest brew was showing some oxidation - but still a treat from the defunct local legend.

This thread, and your post in particular, may finally be what pushes me over the edge to drink the 2018 Sucaba I’ve got.

Poor woman, barleywine is a cruel mistress. Let her down gently.

Revolution V.S.O. Gravedigger (Imperial Scotch Ale aged in Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig, and WhistlePig Rye barrels for two years). I know this isn't technically barleywine, but it most certainly is comparable. Caramel, toffee, molasses, maple, slightest touch of smoke, raisin, fig, rich bourbon spirit, charred oak, vanillin. Yet another winner from Revolution's barrel program. Fantastic.

This is Stoneface Brewing from Newington, NH and their barleywine. This beer registers 11.9% on the label and I bought the bottle while stopping at the brewery on way home from a wedding weekend a few years ago. Cross posting with New Beer weekend thread.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. This is a 2022 vintage that I purchased at the brewery.
The beer pours a rich mahogany color and almost no head, although I finally get a dense beige foam of under .5cm with the end of an aggressive pour. This foam becomes an edge layer pretty quickly after the glass is sitting on the table.
The aroma is fairly sweet and malt driven. I get brown sugar and some raisin notes mixing with a little toffee. No hop character and the ABV seems pretty well hidden at this point.
First sip reveals a medium body with a smooth yet coating texture. Doesnt really feel sticky, although I expect it to with each sip, its a little bit of a weird combo, but also feels nice. Carbonation is very fine and fairly gentle on my palate. The physical traits actually make this an easier drinking beer than I anticipated.
Flavor is similar to the nose.
I get some rich toffee and brown sugar and then some toasted dark bread and raisins again. Here I do get some black peppery bitey booze and a little bit of warming on the swallow. The pepper bite is what lingers after each sip.
This beer isnt overly complex and doesnt have barrels or adjuncts. I find that it works quite well, very glad I picked this up when we visited the brewery.
