I would consider that more art than most beer can labels. Do you have the Light beer can? I loved all those products when they were on shelves.

    Enjoy

Oh, you thought that was my photo. No, I just found it on the web. But I do remember the various generic products from the ‘70s and ‘80s with the six black rectangles on them, like this one.

Is that the beer from Repo Man?

Dunno. Back in the day a lot of generic products in black and white packaging were actually sold that looked like this, not sure if Repo Man spoofed those (it was around the same time) or if it was just more of a coincidence.

EDIT: Apparently the Repo Man beer can looked different. I think the image I posted was an actual product, probably from the late ‘70s/early ‘80s. Most likely during the Carter administration.

Several different breweries brewed generic "Beer" and "Light Beer" for numerous grocery store chains, with slightly different labels, including the S&P breweries - Falstaff, Pearl, General - as well as August Schell, Pickett/Dubuque Star and Pittsburgh*. Cities listed on the cans' fine print is the best way to ID the brewer.

*Iron City's brewer, Pittsburgh Brewing Co. used the 'dba' of Dubois Brewing Co., a brand they bought in mid-60s and best remembered for their Dubois Budweiser brand.

Founders used to have great art on their bottles. For some reason, they dropped art in favor of entry level graphics. Hard to fathom from an aesthetic perspective, so one has to assume it had to somehow do with money.

My dad likes to tell the story about back in the late 80s when he’s go to montauk to go fishing from queens they’d stop at this beer store by the water that had “beer in a white can that just said BEER” and carling red label? Black label? And that was it. Something or other

The packaging I remember (and my parents bought some of this stuff) was only black and white (no red), and it had six rectangles in a 3 x 2 formation like the picture in this post. I have no idea why those rectangles were there—in retrospect I wonder if it was just to make sure the printing alignment was correct, kind of like some packaging or printed material has a pattern of colored dots in a less visible location that have some technical function.

Anyway, this thread is way off topic, apologies @MutuelsMark, I think this happened because of the phrasing of the OP: “What beer has the can/bottle art?” I think an adjective (probably “best”) was inadvertently omitted before “can/bottle” in that question.

I still like this one a lot, it’s instantly recognizable.

The US Carling Black Label cans had long been primarily red, but by the late '80s, brewed by Heileman, they were mostly white.

Both the generic "Beer" from Pittsburgh ('dba' DuBois) and from August Schell ('dba' Augies) had the 6 rectangles.

Why was the judge wearing a Budweiser suit instead of his robes? Seems biased to me.

Sorry about that. Back when I started my account I never intended to be anywhere near as active on here as I have been—I think I originally just wanted to ask one question in the forums or maybe it was so I could start reviewing/trading. In any case I’ve never liked having my last name as my username. So when I recently got free Society membership and saw that I could change it without much effort, I decided to go for it. But I’m still the same obnoxious bastard so that part hasn’t changed.

There have been other users that have had Yin/Yang symbols, but there's always been slight differences. I was stunned that another user had your exact avatar, and was from our state.
