    Good morning to all Advocates,
today I'm writing you a few lines about yet another excellent Imperial Stout from this Estonian brewery. Be wary of first impressions. She was a great beer.

Põhjala Brewery (Tallin, EST) - BANOFFEE BÄNGER - Imperial Stout (12,5%)

Taken from the cellar and placed in the fridge for 10/15 minutes just to cool the bottle.
This is an Imperial Stout inspired by a chocolate, banana and toffee dessert, but it's absolutely not to be connected with the (very artificial) "Pastry Stouts".
In fact, it preserves every characteristic of the classic Imperial Stout, with an addition that contributes in terms of sweetness and taste without distorting the "principle base", remaining as an additional component to a product designed to be an Imperial Stout with banana inspired by a dessert and not a liquid replica of that dessert.

As soon as it's uncorked, aromas of cocoa and banana are amplified as soon as it is poured, together with notes of light roasting that recall a light roasting of coffee.
Already from the pouring you can perceive the density of the liquid.
The color is impenetrable black, the foam is NON-EXISTENT.
Very dense and smooth body in the mouth (no carbonation).
The taste is surprisingly balanced: the main taste that I find in my mouth is that of dark chocolate, which intersects in the background with a sweet, but moderate and not at all cloying, banana flavor that fades into vanilla notes before leaving room for a really soft finish (smooth) in which very light toasted notes of almond and more cocoa come out.
The palate remains pervaded by notes of cocoa and banana, the tongue remains clean and with that delicate toasted taste that invites another sip.
Despite the body and underlying sweetness, this beer maintains a remarkable balance and offers a pleasant and tasty drink, making it seem less demanding than it actually is. Because in any case, those 12.5% are well hidden but still make themselves felt and give warmth to the drink.
Imperial Stout which I really appreciated because it has its own identity and the additions remain in the background respecting the "base beer".
Great balance of taste: it could have been a mess, but it was a hand grenade. Very different from those products full of lactose and syrups.

I'm very glad that we get some Põhjala beers here in the US. They know what they are doing and it's always fun to also try some of their more experimental brews (even if they taste weird at times). Their head brewer is a Scot if I'm not mistaken, so that's an additional soft spot for me.

Good day BAs! Thanks @Jack_14 for starting today's thread with another thoughtful review - I totally agree with your feelings about most pastry stouts!

Heavy frost last night, but otherwise an unremarkable morning - 25F/-4C - may get sunny later.

Today's New Breakfast Beer, thanks to a MASSIVE ninja hit by @snaotheus:

Final impression and summation: 3.5 The highlight is looking through the body with my flashlight – lovely ruby red light. For a stout, this lacks flavor, advertised, or otherwise expected. For a pastry stout, it’s certainly worth drinking again, depending on the price point. Thanks, Ryan, for giving me the opportunity to try another PNW brew I’d otherwise never have tried.

P.S. As I finish the snifter (61.1 degrees) some of the spices finally come through. I normally shovel a shitload of cinnamon into my morning coffee so yes, I know what it tastes like.

My fishing reel broke last year after 18 years of use. Since it is nice outside, I decided to transfer the line from the old one to the new one.

Hope I can get another 18 out of this one.
