I can't seem to find any info on the BeerAdvocate App that was in testing in 2019. Is this an ongoing project?

@Todd has recently mentioned a desire to work on this, so maybe he can speak to current status. I believe the main issue is limited resources/bandwidth/time.

That projected ended in 2019, but I hope to look at options this year.
    Correct.

This is one of the more mobile-friendly sites I've seen. What added functionality would an app provide?

I actually enjoyed the app just fine, especially when I was in a new town looking for breweries, bottle shops, etc…, but this site is mobile friendly as well.

I think in general it would be easier to post a review and post/reply in the forum on the phone not in the traditional HTML format. The site is mobile friendly, but I think an app could improve functionality even more.

Sorry, I'm not seeing it. I have absolutely no trouble posting reviews and uploading photos on the fly the way things are now, and I use my phone for this stuff almost exclusively. If there was some wonderful new feature we couldn't live without, then maybe it would be worth looking into. Without some specifics, though, I just don't see the advantage.

Unless a website is janky on mobile I've never understood the need for an app vs. a mobile website. In many cases they're the same thing inside a container.

Apps are over-rated crutches. Just use websites.

    And, get off my lawn!

'Pie in the sky' is the answer, but whether it's worth it, I don't know. And by 'pie in the sky' I mean some of the suggestions made to Todd in a thread a year ago when he asked what features everyone would like to see. One suggestion was that the camera on a phone can read bar codes, QR codes, etc. on store shelves or bottles/cans and bring up the BA reviews for that beer. Yes, that feature could be programmed into the current BA coding, but I don't think Todd is interested in playing around with the legacy code that currently drives this site. It is probably smarter/easier to write all new code for these various suggestions into an entirely new app.

Having mapping capability for the Places database would be a biggie for me, and my phone would be the best place for it since I'm not fond of hauling my desktop around with me while traveling. A phone app is even better than other devices that are more portable such as a laptop, tablet or any other device bigger than a phone.

The place listings already have a map link. As for a code reader, that might be cool; however, I don't see that the benefit would be worth the tremendous amount of work it would take.

BTW, you disappoint me. I always pictured you driving from brewery to brewery in one of those storm chaser-type cars, with satellite uplinks and radar and stuff. I figured you'd have plenty of room in there for a measly little desktop computer.

You're talking the first app (2014-2016), not the 2019 beta app. Very different experiences.
Discoverability: By not having an app, BA isn't listed in the app stores. As such, we're missing out on tens of thousands new signs up a month, which generate more engagement, more content/data, and more revenue, which would allow us to continue to survive, thrive, and do even more.

And, unless you create a shortcut to the site on your device's home screen, BA isn't as accessible as an app. You need to open up your browser, open the website, log in (if you're not already), and then do whatever you wanted to do.

We're also not able to send push notifications to your device.

    I could go on...

Anyway. I don't want to get into the differences between web, native, and hybrid apps, or various features that any of these app models could bring to the user experience, but the benefits of having some form of presence in app stores are beyond massive.

Locking this one down as the OP's help question has been answered.
