I was trying to add Two Havens Brewing, and they are a contract brewer based out of Smithtown NY. But they don't have a physical location (no taproom, no dedicated brewing facility). What would be the correct way to add these folks so I can post a review of their coffee stout (which is not outstanding but decent BTW)?

Not sure how they're a contract brewer with no dedicated brewing facility. Wouldn't that make potential customers leery of hiring them?

They contract brew, or they have their beers contract brewed?

The contract brewer is the one who actually produces the beer, and you need a physical location to do that. What are the beer companies they're contract brewing for?

So if a homeless person brews a beer it can’t be a homebrew?

This actually brings about a questions I had...maybe what the OP is asking but I'll let them speak for themself.

Locally, we have a brewery that apparently has all of their beers contract brewed. The brewer has a website but there is no physical address listed. There is a local bar that I think has some sort of relationship with the brewer and carries their beers but the bar is not the brewery as they have a different name and carry many other beers not brewed by the brewer. How do you add to the database a brewer that has all of their beers contract brewed and has no physical address?

You add the name and location of the contract brewer. They're the ones that have to fill out the form and pay the taxes. The are the brewery.

Then, you would add the name of the place in it own entry, with the note that their beers are brewed by the contract brewer.

Their address has to be listed somewhere, might take some digging, but it's out there.

You can shoot them an email at [email protected] and ask.

Doubt that happens much. A contract brewer needs to use brewing facilities. If they don't have any, they'd have to in turn lease brewing facilities from a brewery. Then the brewery-less contract brewer would be an unnecessary middle-man driving cost up, and their customers would contract-brew with a brewery directly.

If that is what is proper, then I'm good and thanks. They contract at Ubergeek Brewing in Riverhead, per their label.

Which part of the word 'less' is confusing you? If one doesn't have a home, one can't homebrew.

This confusion has been around since the term "contract brewer" became commonly used in the 1980s. Both the contractee and contractor ( sometimes called the "host brewery") companies are called by the same name.

Not necessarily - if the deal is a legal Alternating Proprietorship:

They probably are a shoestring outfit that operates out of a residence. It can be awkward giving out too much information (code violations?) There was for a while a Long Island brewery that actually brewed at a residence that wasn't currently lived in. Did Boston Beer first use a PO box when they contracted out the early Sam Adams?

Well, post #11 completely contradicts that idea.

Also, this is what is stated in BA Help Page:

    Beer Marketing Companies
These are companies that don't have a brick and mortar brewery, but sell beer brands by contract brewing with brick and mortar breweries.
    • Beers should ALWAYS be listed under the (beer marketing) company that owns the brands.
    • NEVER list beers under the brewery that contract brews them. We do this as the brewing facility may change, often does, but the the brand is not owned by them.

Yes, chances are their business license address is listed on some public state website database somewhere

This thread has to be the most confusing thread EVER!

But my 2¢: When I'm on a pub crawl vacation and using the BA database for breweries to visit, and I see one listed with a P.O. Box for the address, I assume that they don't have a physical brewery or taproom and they don't want me visiting their 'location' (however and wherever it exists).

^ This is the answer to the OP's question.

Locking this one down now to avoid further confusion + the entry has already been added by the OP and approved.
