I agree. While hitting pubs in London in 2022, I was dismayed to see American Budweiser being VERY present.

A lot of mouth watering options then -- a few lasted in some form into my beer drinking life. We scored a lone leftover six pack of Ballantine Ale from Newark in about 1973. It was intensely good and memorable. I had a quick draft of Krueger Porter (Falstaff, possibly similar to Narragansett) at a bar in Bayonne in about 1978. McSorley's by Ortlieb through the 70s was my ale of choice, and was faithful to the earlier Liebmann version. Draft Schaefer beer in the 70s tasted pretty good at our local. Teddy's Bar in Brooklyn features a stained glass exterior that proclaims Peter Doelger Extra (but no, the beer's not available), with some original interior fixtures. I don't know of other tied house locations that have survived in NYC. Any in NJ?

I'd visit England between the wars and go to some railwaymens' pubs with steam locomotives panting outside, to hear the stories. Then a stop at some coal miners' local by the pit to taste what swill they washed the dust out of their throats with. And hopefully find a free house in some genteel and quiet village where the patrons gathered around the BBC news on the radio.

This is pretty close to my wish, although I’d go before WW1 when most beer was watered down to save grain and fuel for the war effort.

I'd travel forward to the year 2121 with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and all of the 1921 peace dollars I got on my last Time Machine gig fixin' pots n' pans, washing high-rise windows, selling all those Florsheim shoes, Fuller brushes, Sears catalogs... Hey! A guy can dream!

I’d love to back to 2006-2013 timeframe and visit Alpine brewery and have Nelson from the source. I was able to have it in 2015 when shipped to Maryland distributors. I still gave it a very high rating but just would want to experience it from that time and in that place.

I would travel back to 1986 San Francisco to watch Captain Kirk drink a Michelob:

Hm, in comparison: Rodenbach Grand Cru and Vintage is 3.40 pH. Not much of difference with yr numbers.

    Are paradoxes allowed?

    Because this one is easy.

1976. Wrigley Field. Beautiful summer day.

I’m 8 and my 18 year old sister takes me to a Cubs game.

We sit in the near empty bleachers and I distinctly remember the smell of sweet, sweet cheeba.

I’d go back and sit sort of near me and my sister and I’d drink Old Style all day and soak in Wrigley when it was at its best.

Yes, she was a very cool sister.

Place called "Gimpet's" (sp?) or something similar? I knew someone from Bayonne and we always talked about me going up there and meeting up for a few porters, but never did. The one time I had the Krueger Old Surrey Porter was at a private event where someone picked up a keg of it in North Jersey. To me, it was pretty hoppy and showed a real family resemblance to Ballantine XXX Ale - to the point of me thinking it might even have been Ballantine XXX Ale + Porterine (wouldn't put it passed Kalmanovitz's Falstaff).

I only had bottled Narragansett Porter, both when it was available only by the case in deposit bottles (below left) and then after Falstaff did an early "crafty" move and designed a new label and put it in sixpacks of T/A bottles. It was nothing like the Krueger Porter, but did have a slightly sweet taste, not as sweet as Stegmaier Porter.

There used to be a pdf online of the GABF 1982 program, with Ballantine Porter listed, which someone crossed out and hand wrote "Narragansett". The description for the Ballantine said it was 6%, brewed with Cascade and Bullion hops, dry hopped and (quoting the brewery) "...with more body and hop flavor to it than most of Falstaff's and most other breweries' products". (They didn't bring any Porter to the 1983 GABF - only Ballantine India Pale Ale)

So, who knows? It was nearly half a century ago that I had them.

You actually made the thread ya crazy bastard! I wouldn't time travel too far for beer, I just wish I was around during the 80s-90s craft boom. Seems like such a fun time for beer

    first post alert

Time traveling doesn't appeal to me but I would very much want to park myself in front of the TV's in an English pub watching my favorite team (I don't have one) while drinking as much as I weigh in British Ales. I think maybe I watch too much Ted Lasso.
