A cold Hamm's brings back fond memories of visiting my wife's late grandmother and she'd always fix me a fried bologna sandwich and a Hamm's. She was a Hamm's drinker until she died @ 99 years young.

I haven't come across any AALs in Finland, but I've been getting my fill of solid lagers that run the gamut of styles. Even the "cheaper" and store brands are solid offerings.

A lot of these reviews are old and many early BA’rs were just anti macro. The early reviews have no substance “tastes like a sweaty sock with dog piss” dude no it doesn’t

Well, some DO taste like that and I’m not anti-macro at all. I have no opinion on Hamm’s but to me Budweiser, PBR, Molson, and Modelo (it seemed to taste better in the bottle than the can) are absolutely terrible.

Todd. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts as to how those lagers compare flavor wise to the AALs we have here. Are there any similarities?

The wife and I were recently in Germany and Prague for 10 days, and I drank a fair amount of lager there. The lightest style beers we sampled were in Cologne, but even the Kolsch we tried there had more flavor (and I would argue better flavor) than most of the AALs available over here. Many of the beers we tried had abvs. comparable to most AALs over here.

Hamms: When you want to drink a beer, not form a relationship with it.
Appreciated a couple out at the grill tonight. Cheers!

Cheaper in price with a moderate ABV range (4,3-5,4%), but the similarities stop there. All of the ones that I've tried so far have been very flavorful with range; Pale/Dark Lager, German/Czech Pilsner, Export, and even Smoked.

Please correct me if I'm wrong @Todd - but I think I remember PBR being one of your go-to beers when you were in California.

PBR has a BA score of 69 @John_M

And on the topic of reviews on BA, here's a quote from Todd's +34% rDev Banquet review:
"For what it is, and keeping the style in mind (unlike most of the other reviewers) ... it ain't all that bad."

There is no majority opinion about what makes a beer poor. You seem to put a lot of value in beer scores as an indicator of worth when a score on BA is in sync with your personal tastes. You seem to put no value in sales figures as an indicator of worth when they are not in sync with your personal tastes. I guess some people might put value in what @Todd specifically thinks.

No matter what someone may or may not value in this case, is there really a need to consistently "push back" (to use your words) against people in an appreciation thread who are just showing light hearted enthusiasm for a beer that gets maligned in other areas of this site?

Correct. I bought it by the 30-pack to ensure that I always had plenty in the fridge.

So the big question is, why did you like it so much to always have it on hand?

Also, what's your go-to now in your new country? Anything similar? Better?

@John_M - For the record, so far today I had a Yuengling Flight, Yuengling Light Lager, Landshark, and Sierra Nevada Bigfoot. I would say that that list is in least to most favorite order. I have no love for the first three, and I consider the last beer to be one of the coolest American beers. I thought all were worth trying/drinking, but Bigfoot is a purchase I repeat and celebrate. I completely understand how someone else would feel the opposite. Cheers man. :beers:

Hard to know where to start to unpack all this. Some of the comments in this thread were a bit over the top IMHO, which is why I felt it was time to try to be the voice of "reason". Hence my comment about the score on BA. Otherwise, I don't believe I said anything particularly negative about Hamms, or those who were enjoying a bit of nostalgia in this thread.

I can see no point in responding to your comment about sales figure, except to say that there are multiple reasons why consumers buy beer. In the wine world for example, the biggest selling brands are typically not recognized as the best (two buck chuck, gallo jug wine, etc.). So the fact Modelo is now the best selling beer on the planet (and bud light before it) is hardly an indicator of quality (I would argue).

As for what makes a beer "poor," of course in many ways this is a subjective call. One man's garbage can be another man's treasure, no? However, on Beer Advocate Hamms has been rated/reviewed by approximately 1700 members and garnered a composite score of 68. The number of ratings/reviews is significant I think, as it means the rating score was probably unaffected by unusually high or unusually low review scores. On BA, a score of 68 makes it a poor beer. That doesn't mean it's a poor beer as far as everyone is concerned. A number of members have scored it quite highly (as I pointed out). I would add, however, that actually a score of 68 does not align with my personal taste. I would give it a much lower score than that.

I'm sorry that you seem to find some of my prior posts so annoying. However, on BA it's fairly normal for members to have diverging opinions and viewpoints and to express them. That being said...

As always, drink what you like. If Hamms is a beer that you really enjoy, then by all means drink as much of it as you like and don't worry what others may think of your taste in beer. You certainly won't go to the poor house any time soon if Hamms is your beer of choice. It's a well priced beer, that's something I think we can all agree on.

    Cheers!
