Because it was my go-to, everyday, lager and that's how you treat a friend. But mostly because of the bulk savings.
Still exploring, but there are a ton of cheap (in price) / store brand lagers (Pale, Dark, Export, German/Czech Pils, Smoked, etc.) lagers that I rotate through. I haven't come across anything similar to PBR and the like. And I haven't had a bad lager (or beer in general) yet.

I didn't mean for you to think like that. I was just sticking up for some folks by pushing back on the push back. Generally speaking, it seems like some of my posts on BA come across as more confrontational than intended.

I wish I could find Hamm’s in middle TN. There’s a bar in Nashville that I believe still has it on tap, but that is the only place. Anybody have insight into their district here?

I've mostly just been lurking on this thread, with the full disclosure that I have deep nostalgia for Hamm's: it was my grandfather's beer, and I've been known to enjoy it from time to time. At the same time, I know it's a bad beer, just like I know McDonald's hamburgers are bad burgers, although I've been known to enjoy them from time to time. If rating/reviewing a beer has no meaningful value, why do we do it? Why are there ratings and reviews here on BA? Someone telling me they "enjoy" something isn't that interesting . . . I don't need to log on to a hobbyist Web site for that, I can just hang out at a BBQ. And, for me, it isn't just a bias against AALs; I think Yuengling is significantly better than Hamm's, for example. At any rate, I have no problem thinking, "I'm going to enjoy a shitty beer right now." But I'm not going to lie to myself and tell myself it's great.

My 2 neighbors and I had an "open fridge policy" in that we all had full access to each other's garage beer fridge. One of them stocked Yuengling, the other Labatt's Blue. I stocked Hamm's. This was in Harrisburg, PA. I'm originally from Wisconsin. I was teased mercilessly by these gentlemen for my selection, accusations of being cheap were mentioned, alongside a concept that I intentionally stocked bad beer to gain advantage in the who drank who's free beer the most...
They called my Hamm's beer "Neighbor Repellent"

I think that's an apt analogy. A lot of us have "dirty pleasures" like that. I don't think that's exactly earth shattering news, nor do I think there's anything particularly wrong with having a Mcd burger every now and again. Likewise, I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying a cold glass of Hamms from time to time (or all the time, if that's what floats your boat).

However, when members start getting carried away and suggesting Hamms is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I just felt it might be time to pull in the reigns and remind everyone that this isn't a beer that's rated very highly on BA.

I know we're all from different generations, and our introductions to beer run a wide gamut, but I drank more "shitty" beer in the years before the Micro Boom® that I don't feel any need to go back. No matter the current fad.

I now have my radar set for a Hamm's single if I see one to try for myself, but I have the feeling it will wow me as much as the revisits of PBR and Miller I ventured.

I think the nostalgic feel is different depending on how you were introduced to beer. Experiencing the turn of the tide from the typical US beer to craft brewing was an epiphany for me. Growing up with good beer always available is something I know I can't comprehend.

Unspecified details. Year? Hamm's probably wasn't available in PA until the 80s. Hamm's cheaper than Yuengling?? I'm guessing not Yuengling Premium?

I lived there from about 2002 until 2018. I recall that the Yuengling my neighbor supplied was the traditional lager, and it was not cheap relative to the other brands. It was always popular there. I took the tour with my neighbor one time. Dick Yuengling met our tour group for a photo op at the end of the tour. Very understated and friendly. He approached my neighbor and I and asked me what I thought about his beer. I told him it was not to my liking. Flash forward to the next weekend. My neighbor is having a pool party and invites me over (Kids birthday or somesuch). Guess who is sitting in one of the lawnchairs? Dick Yuengling, lol
Childhood friends with my neighbor, and oh ya, my neighbor had called him before we took the tour and told him we were coming, and of course I had made retaliatory comments about Yuengling beer for years, so my neighbor, being the witty fellow that he is, probably planned out my embarrasing myself at the end of that tour.
Hamm's was pretty much always the 2nd cheapest beer at the beer store by me, the cheapest one being Milwaukee's Best, which I would also sometimes purchase. My neighbors called that "Milton Bradley", like toy or pretend beer. I did drink a lot of the Labatt's, and the price was right, lol

As a young adult, I quickly gave up trying to find good beer. Eventually I visited a supply store in the shadow of the Peace Bridge and purchased a John Courage kit and began brewing beer. A brown ale was my first batch. Delicious (or so we thought).

A lot of batches and experimentation often yielded poor results. I think my toleration for common beers comes from these days. Fortunately good beers were brewed too.

Soon small brew pubs started to appear. The Buffalo Brewing Company was my first visit and I was at Great Lakes Brewing Company’s opening week. As you alluded to earlier, my nephews have an unbelievable assortment to choose from now so they don’t contemplate my “old man beer.” It’s been a great journey to our present time of plenty. An occasional trip back to simpler times is made easy by cracking open a Hamm’s or similar old school beer like Little Kings. Cheers.

My progression to good beer went from Anchor Steam to Dead Guy Ale to Racer 5 to Big Daddy IPA to Pliny. Pretty obvious where the geography was, I guess:slight_smile:

Well that certainly sucks. I fell in with a rogues gallery of home brewers who helped guide my technique -- as well as develop my palate for good beer character. I still have first and second place ribbons from my HB days.
    Always encouraging.

Rogue Brewing was a great tour back in the late 90s.

Little guidance back then aside from the odd store and Zymurgy magazine. Purposeful experiments sometimes were great. Sometimes not so much. Always we happily drank the beer. Cheers.

In about 1990, my family made a mid-day stop in Ashland, OR, to visit the original Rogue Brewpub. We had a minimal amount of beer with lunch, since we were headed out soon. This was during the Shakespearean Festival (made obvious by the well dressed aliens walking around town). We noted the nearby creek, whose eventual flooding was the cause of the Ashland closure. The name "Rogue" comes from the Rogue River Valley, where Ashland lies.
