Thoughts on a bottle of Rodenbach Alexander that has been cellared (forgotten) since 2019.

Good to drink or likely a sink pour?

That’s my favorite sour beer, I try to buy it whenever I see it. I think a 2019 will still be very good if kept cold. How cold was the bottle stored?

@MutuelsMark Id open that beer up and try it. worst cast its acidic vinegary mess. (unlikely IMO)
Best case its a slightly more mellow version of the fresh beer and maybe has a little more malt profile.
I think it will be totally fine, let us know how it turns out!

I think you’ll probably like it, do you have the small capped bottle or one of the bigger corked bottles ? I think the smaller bottles have been better than the corked bottles for me.

I think you’re in for a treat, I’ve had this beer much older than 5 years and it held up fine.

WOWZER! Everyone is correct, very good flavor still. Lots of carbonation still. Initial nose was very vinegary, however that faded away quickly and the cherry nose and flavor took over!

Good to hear that you liked it, have you tried the Rodenbach Grand Cru. It’s right up there with the Alexander.

I just found a stash of old Rodenbach bottles at my local beer store. In addition to some large format Alexander’s, they also had a 2014 barrel 192 Vintage ale as well as their 200th anniversary Red Triple.

Is anyone here familiar with the 2014 Vintage or the Triple? They’ve been kept cold but are also pretty long in the tooth.

Long time ago, I found a small bottle of R'bach Alexander in the house I had just moved into. That must have been in 2000 or 2001. The bottle dated from the 90s (definitely before 1997). I waited a few more years before opening and tasting the bottle. It was miraculous. So, I knew it was going to be a hit, the bottle in this post.

As for the previous post above, I would recommend to buy the Vintage, it will still hold up a lot. I still have 2 bottles of 2009 in my cellar, I will taste them in 2024 or 2025.
Leave the Red Triple, since it is a fluke of a beer. It is a blend of some R'bach and the Brugge Tripel. Brugge Tripel was unsuccesful and that is why they blended it with some R'bach (I think it was Grand Cru). Funny word game in Dutch: 'Red' in Dutch means 'Save', so my pun is: they wanted to save the Tripel by blending it with a Rodenbach.

Thank you for the advice, Ernest. I will pick up the vintages and leave the triple behind. Regarding the original Alexander’s, the story I remember is that Rodenbach made the first batch of Alexander in about 88 or 89. I don’t think they made another one until after 2000, so the one left in your house may have been from the 80s.
