    Test Day nr 2.
Comparing 4 discount lagers to Amstel Pilsner.

    The candidates today:

Candidate 3: Premium Beer/Lager (the stronger variant), brewer unknown, comes at 87 cents a litle. 4.7% abv. The cheapest of all.
Candidate 4: Brouwers Premium Beer. Produced by or more likely for the Albert Heyn supermarket chain. at 1,38 euros a litre.
Candidate 0: our benchmark lager, Amstel, depending on the deal, but around 2,30-2.40 a litre, 5%abv

Yesterday's beers were drinkable, but very watery and general lacking aroma and taste, so Amstel came out as winner.
Todays contenders are stonger in the ABV. Will that help?

    Let us dig in.

    Looks:
    1. Amstel, nicest golden colour, was more carbonated than yesterdays bottle. Not too much foam, not much retention
    2. Brouwers, good head, medium carbonation, best retention, bit pale
    3. Premium: very pale, medium high carbonation, but goes flat fast

    Smell:
    1. Brouwers, the most malty of all, slight notes of biscuit, but not very interesting.
    2. Amstel, more malty aroma but skunky
    3. Premium, hardly any smell, some notes of malt, but not smelling like anything you can drink

    Mouthfeel:
    1. Amstel, the most smooth and full bodied of them all.
    2. Brouwers: a bit light, but still acceptable
    3. Premium: thin with dry aftertaste

Premium is gone and it in between Amstel and Brouwers, which one will win? The most important is of course the taste:

    1. Brouwers: although lacking interesting flavours, it is a solid pilsner style beer with typical bitter hoppiness taste well balanced with the malts.
    2. Amstel: well tweaked with extra hop infusion and probably has the most taste, but this time the skunky malts are tasted in comparison to Brouwers.
    3. Not so much taste at all. Very strange beer. I think I even might like the lower variantion better (will set up a test tomorrow).

Winner overall: Brouwers. You could say Amstel and Brouwers are very close to each other, maybe overall Amstel would score better. But the taste test and the value for money consideration, point it out. If you want or need to drink b-grade lager, Brouwers is a drinkable beer of choice.

Oh yes, and very interesting, the labeling says it is a ":vegan beer".
Like many beers are brewed with ox blood. It probably means they checked the barleys and hops for not having bugs and lice. That is nice.

    1) Paulaner Muncher Hell (4.9%): A German helles with flavors of earthy honey and German bread. A smooth finish.
    versus
    2) Weihenstephaner Original Premium (5.1%): A German Helles with flavors of earthy Munich malt. (Correctly matched the two beers blind)

    Winner:
    2) Weihenstephaner Original Premium:
German Helles Battle. First is Paulaner. Smooth, but fairly more mild flavors than I remember. Up against Weihenstephaner, which has far more earthy and Munich bread malt flavors. Similar smoothness, but far more complex and authentic flavors. I remember these being more similar, but Weihenstephaner is the clear winner here. Weihenstephaner has been winning a lot of battles recently.

I’m at Cypress Brewing in Edison, NJ, on this rainy afternoon. I’m drinking 1924, an Imprrial Stout aged in Whiskey barrels. It’s a special release to commemorate the 100th anniversary (3/1/1924) of a horrific industrial explosion which occurred on the site of the modern building in which the brewery is located. Cheers!

Happy Saturday BAs! Anyone like Nelson Sauvin hops? Halfway Crooks Beer in Atlanta did a great job with Linus, a German style Pilsner featuring Nelson Sauvin and Motueka hops. This is a very enjoyable beer.

Impressively crafted. Hops are delicate in aroma and flavor with citrus and berry notes. Restrained but present bitterness compliments the grainy malt flavor nicely. Dry and clean finish that is moderate in length. All elements of this beer a well-balanced. The hops will not overwhelm you at all but the pilsner base allows you to enjoy the nuances. The grainy malt backbone provides a familiarity you recognize in a pilsner. Accomplishes what brewer set out to do, showcase new world hops NZ hops - Nelson Sauvin and Motueka - in a familiar old world German pilsner beer.

Got another new HCB coming up. Just picked these up today. Cheers all!

I know there's discussion in another thread about the greatness of Head Hunter, but to my mind, Hop Juju is in a class above. I'm even tempted to put it just behind Pliny and Heady for my third favorite DIPA; now that it's year-round, I just might do so.

At New Image Brewing for the 8th Anniversary bash. A mead barrel aged stout appropriately named 8 in the glass. Thick and oily with dark sweet fruit and a warm and woody finish. Nicely done and perhaps the first mead barrel beer I've had? Cheers.....

Hey guys since I consider you like my second family I wanted to let you know the restaurant where I work burned last night. Thankfully everyone got out safely. We suffered major damage. The power and electric were all shut off so in addition to the damage we lost all product. Ironically I was bragging about how about how I able to get more incentives from management ....yesterday!!! Prob should have kept my mouth shut. Be back later with beer(s)
