Tons of chocolate fudge and bourbon barrel flavors. The best beer I’ve had thus far during TBBW! Gotta move on to the next venue, featuring meet the brewer from Phase Three. Cheers y’all!

I've got a few of these left, my local place is out. Not sure if they are going to do this again.

Can't believe this costs 2$ less than corona. Hopefully, I'm not jinxing this sweet deal. Smell is questionable but it's a beaut in the glass and tasty: dry at first, then a sweet, roasty finish .

I never got too into bmx but I have some skateboarding scars.

    1) Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel (5.0%): A German Dunkel with flavors of brown bread, earthy Munich malt, caramel and yeast.
    versus
    2) Badger State SKI-BRW (5.6%): A Czech Dark Lager from Wisconsin with nice earthy, nutty, floral flavors. Clean. (Correctly matched the two beers blind)

    Winner:
    1) Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel:
Dunkel vs Czech Dark Lager Battle. First is Ayinger. An authentic German Dunkel. Tons of brown bread, sweet caramel, complex German bread malt and yeast flavors.
Next is SKI-BRW from Badger State. Brown and black malt notes. Earthy and nutty notes. Clean. It doesn't have as much brown bread and flavor as Ayinger, but still very good.

Been raining most of the week and supposed to get a couple more inches between now and the end of the weekend. The Blackstone river is getting pretty high at the moment.

Pours a thick, dark mahogany color, appears black and opaque in the glass; thick, brown head, long lasting. Deep aromas of roasted and charred grains infused with notes of cocoa; brownies; a hint of cherry. Outstanding flavor; rich chocolate notes with a touch of whiskey; dark pitted dried fruit elements; charred grain bitterness. Heavy mouthfeel; thick and viscous; nice underlying boozy warmth.

There is enough about this iteration of the beer to make me notch up all my subjective scores by a quarter point. The relatively higher ABV, while not hidden per se, doesn't overpower the already massive base beer. Rich and complex. Hoppin' Frog did a fine job with this edition of the beer.

    4.0 4.0 4.25 4.25 4.0; BA weighted overall score: 4.13; rDev: -4.6%

Deep, dark brown body, opaque; thin yet lasting light brown head, creamy; thick, sticky sheets of foam create a curtain down the glass. Outstanding roasted grain aroma; cocoa; coffee. Rich, dark malt flavor infused with a bold touch of whiskey; vanilla; a suggestion of cinnamon. Heavy body; mildly coarse on the palate; some residual sugar sweetness offset with alcohol dryness.

A nice, robust barrel-aged imperial stout.

ABV: 10.5% (assumed); pouring temperature: 43 °F; canning info: unreadable

    1) Phase Three Black Bouquet (8.0% canned 12/28/23): A NEIPA from Chicago with Mosaic, Strata, Idaho 7, and Talus for flavors of lime, guava, green grape, melon, and floral notes.
    versus
    2) Toppling Goliath Broccoli Special Reserve (8.3% canned 1/23/24): A NEIPA from Iowa with Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe, Blanc for flavors of mango, sweet orange, pineapple, and lychee. (Correctly matched the two beers blind)

    Winner:
    2) Toppling Goliath Broccoli Special Reserve:
Phase Three vs. Toppling Goliath Battle. First is Phase Three and a BlackStack Collab. One of my favorites from them with the addition of the Talus hop here. Lots of lime, guava, green grape, and hints of floral notes. Some of the pop is starting to fade as it approaches that three month mark.
Next is Toppling Goliath Broccoli Special Reserve. Also excellent with the addition of the Blanc hops to brighten it up, but still has that classic OJ & citrus flower flavor that I get in most Toppling Goliath IPAs. Black Bouquet is quite excellent, but sadly aging a bit. Toppling Goliath gets the win, but I bet it would be a closer battle if they had similar canning dates.

This is a legit German lager! Totally digging the toasted pumpernickel sweetness with a deft touch of noble hops. Cheers to Doug for sending this along!
