Thanks to Pliny the Younger, February/ March has become "TIPA Season" on the West Coast. And to be honest, pty has some serious competition.

Has this impact spread beyond the west coast? It's only this year that is really visible on decent store shelves as opposed to just top notch beer bars. So maybe it's something that is just starting to spread. But I'm curious to hear what everyone the is seeing. Including other west coasters, has TIPA Season moved from the tap room to the cooler shelf?

No idea. I don't pay much attention Trendy India Pale Ales (or India Pale Ales in general) these days.

I have seen a few on store shelves and in the taprooms lately and normally it has been none, but I don't recall which breweries because I don't tend to like them so I ignore them.

What’s the serious competition to PtY out in California? Not sure I could even think of a sought-after TIPA beyond PtY out these parts.

Definitely not a thing on the east coast, or at least here in NY. TIPA of the hazy/New England style variety are common year-round, but while it's getting more common to see traditional American IPA from new-school breweries I can't remember the last time I saw one in the 10% range.

Side inquiry: Is there a logical reason why March/early spring is “TIPA season”? Is there a reason PtY has always come out this time of year? There’s an obvious reason why fresh hop season happens when it does—but I’m curious why TIPAs would proliferate now and not just be made year round.

I've yet to see any product from Russian River here in the twin cities. There are some badass TIPAs from Barrel Theory, Surly, Blackstack, and many more local offerings statewide that could possibly give RR a run for its money.

BKS and Alma Mader rarely miss on their Triple IPAs, but they aren't consistent releases in terms of release dates / calendars.

Chicagoland has TIPAs throughout the year. Not sure who drinks all these. No such thing as TIPA season and if there were it would probably be a by product of global warming.

Alesmith and Pizza Port put out one called Logical Choice that is comparable to me, Henhouse makes Big Chicken which is right there on its good years, I hear good things about Power Plant from Smog City but I've never had it. And I've heard people claim various Oregon beers as comparable as well.

As far as I can tell it's all an outgrowth of the pty release. I have no idea why pty was first brewed at this time of year. Maybe they were just trying to drum up some business during the post holiday lull?

AKA my annual decision to purchase SN Hoptimum or not. I would happily scoop up one. Six is a bridge too far I'm afraid.

Checking the SN beer calendar this is scheduled for release in May.

I attended a Pliny the Younger event (draft beer) last weekend at a local craft beer bar.

I have not seen any influence of this beer creating a TIPA season in my area.

    Cheers!

RR doesn't distribute to the Midwest. So it would be a pretty big surprise to find any of their beer in the twin cities. Closest location to find RR beer would be either SEPA or Colorado.

RR is a good brewery and they make some exceptional beers. However, none of them are good enough to justify that kind of a trip (IMHO). Also... In my experience, there are plenty of top notch breweries in your neck of the woods to keep pretty much any craft beer nerd satisfied.
