    Revisited March 20th, 2024

The appearance was much approved at this point, especially the head. It was dense, long-lasting, semi-creamy and left sheets of foam down the inside of the glass. Even the smell came across as richer, fuller. I have no changes for taste or mouthfeel nor the overall score.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

Original November 30th, 2023 blind tasting notes and scores:

    3.5 4.0 4.25 4.0 4.0

Definitely a barleywine by taste, roughly 10% ABV

Dark, clear pour, deep mahogany red. Initial decent khaki head, soon fades to thin wisp of cover with a thread of foam circling the inside of the glass

Smell has chocolate notes. Dark roasted malts. No sense of adjuncts or barrel aging.

Chocolate and caramel flavors; mild booziness; brownies; phenol bitterness.

Smooth and silky heaviness to the mouthfeel.

My initial though was a barleywine, but now I'm thinking of a big milk or chocolate stout.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Now that I know what I'm drinking, here are some revised review notes with updates ratings and scores, somewhat affected by how the beer changes as it warms up:

The appearance looks and impressions remain the same: dark, clear pour, opaque look in the glass, very thin and sparse head. The aroma also remains much the same: warm, roasted grain notes with elements of dark chocolate. The taste, as it warms, adds hints of raisins and dates with a bit of chewing tobacco. The mouthfeel expands with some warmth and stickiness on the palate.

Well, I was wrong on about every count of my first impressions. This is a barrel aged beer coming in at 13.5% ABV and is a strong ale. I've read recently where, like is a beer should be considered a porter or a stout, such classifications can also be called into question if a beer is a barleywine or an old ale. I guess it all comes down to what the brewer and the marketing folks want to label a beer. Regardless, this is a fine big beer, very malt forward, with a near magical touch in restraining the relatively high alcohol content with a delicious malt base.

    1) Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Dunkel (5.3%): A German Dunkelweizen with flavors of orange spice, banana bread, and caramel. Smooth.
    versus
    2) Andech Weissbier Dunkel (5.0%): A German Dunkelweizen with flavors of cocoa, caramel, brown bread. Yeasty. (Correctly matched the two beers blind)

    Winner:
    2) Andechs Weissbier Dunkel:
Dunkelweizen Beer Battle. Revisiting this beer battle from January as these are very similar and always seems to flip flop. Weihenstephaner has nice flavors. Some orange spice, bread, and caramel. Very smooth.
Andechs pours darker and expectedly has some darker flavor notes. Very similar, but a bit more cocoa, caramel, brown bread, and toast. Slightly more yeasty and drier.
Think I prefer the slightly more dark and complex flavors of Andechs here.

Tastes good but the tongue coating is dry dusty grainy powdery (Lupomax?) and is distracting. Cheers y’all!

    1) Drekker King of The Thing (8.3% canned 2/27/24): A NEIPA from North Dakota with Citra hops for flavors of orange citrus, tropical citrus, some sweet peach. Juicy, soft, and smooth.
    versus
    2) BlackStack Sponge Bath (8.5% no canning date): A NEIPA from Minnesota with Citra, Mosaic, Strata, Cashmere for flavors of lemon citrus, orange, papaya, pineapple. (Correctly matched the two beers blind)

    Winner:
    1) Drekker King Of The Thing:
The age-old Drekker vs. BlackStack Battle. Two breweries that make some great haze. These are a couple of staple IPAs from each. First is Drekker King Of The Thing. All Citra. Strong orange, tangerine, some white grape, peach, and berries. Perfect balance of citrus and tropical, finishes zesty, yet sweet.
Next is BlackStack Sponge Bath. Don't get as much BlackStack distribution anymore unfortunately. They've been making this IPA for a while. Nice hop combo. It has classic BlackStack flavors with the sweet lemon, tropical pineapple, papaya and mango. I knew this was a BlackStack IPA at the first sip. I think this is one of their great IPAs. No frill, but pure BlackStack flavors.
Going to pick Drekker in this battle. I tend to lean toward BlackStack over Drekker the majority of the time, but this is one of Drekker's best and they nearly perfected the Citra hop here.

I am a bit oblivious but what beer style is it? That’s a very opaque, thick looking beer for a « yellow » one. Cheers!

A typical Hazy from EQ. More of a HazyLite as there was a little clarity. The body was not full nor fluffy. The grainy tongue coating is what I find objectionable. When buying IPAs, I’m now avoiding Cryo, Phantasm Powder, Lupomax, etc.

Having a Stone IPA. Got my spring Covid booster today - no adverse effects so far. I have a feeling my arm will likely be sore tomorrow because it hurt when he gave me the shot. Really getting hungry but it's a bit too early to eat. Homemade meatball sub on the menu for this evening.

Posting this one for you Mark Knopfler and Emmy Lou Harris fans - just dropped 2 hours ago. Love that Danelectro he's playing in the first tune! What a great pairing these two make - if you like these two, this is a must watch. :sunglasses: And that drop dead gorgeous Gibson acoustic she's playing

Thanks for the shoutout, I find it really nice you waited near two years to drink it.

Just ask anyone who’s done trades with me, I consider myself lucky and reasonable if I keep some treats and haul for more than three days…
