Oh, yeah, of course - I kept thinking metric equivalent and forgot about Imperial. I don't see a reg. on going beyond tenths for ounces - I guess that also threw me. But I guess if you're comparison shopping and one can says 19.2oz. and Dogfish Head is 19.25 oz., who's not going to want that extra ⅓ of a teaspoon of beer!
Relevant? Like when I have no more than $2.97, desperately need 19.2 ounces of something cold, convenient and fully loaded with alcohol? Check. Check. Check. Love that DFH has not lost their way. Joking aside, I'm the demographic that pushed DFH into C-stores. Stopped buying 60 Minute and lost interest in the Off Center nonsense a looong time ago. Apparently I was not alone. Cheers
Some of the posts about non-regular/seasonal beers from Dogfish Head reminded me that one year and 9 days ago I posted about their new spring seasonal, Nordic Spring IPA, in a NBW thread: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-weekend-138.671871/#post-7725810 I will have to keep an eye out for this year's release of this seasonal beer. Cheers!
As far as retail goes they are definitely not as prevalent. That’s probably because a lot of their uniqueness has become normal as years went on. That doesn’t mean 60 min isn’t still a registered classic. The brewery (Milton and Rehoboth), however, is amazing and still brews a lot of “off-centered” styles. Last time I was there I had a golden ale brewed with mezcal followed by an English mild on cask. Both were exceptional and show that DFH is still the same brewing company. I think they just have toned down their distribution game as they’ve grown
This is what I try to highlight in my post and what I took away from our last visit, at the brewery still several DFH beers of old. I had a white sage IPA, good classic IPA with a unique adjunct that was super well integrated. I look forward to next time we make our trip to Delaware to see what beers they may have on tap.
They're still relevant to me. I'm under 2hrs away from the brewery and with my AHA membership, I get 20% off of everything there (food, beer, liquor, merch). I make good use of that at least once a year to get 90min and a bunch of stouts. I currently have 3 WWS variants and 120min aged in Utopias barrels. Their liquor is real good too, from their whiskey aged in Utopias and sherry barrels, to the compelling gin and barrel honey rum. Since I'm close enough, I can try all of the one off brews at the brewpub in Rehoboth and I still feel they do a great job staying relevant at least in my area. 60min and 90min are definitely a go to if there's nothing else I want to try and a good beer to have at a party.
Still relevant. I get a lot of their more limited releases at the Wegman's by me, and the brewery itself has a ton on tap that is great and outside of the box. If all you get in your area is 60/90/Seaquench, maybe you'd be bored. But the brewery has 25 beers on tap, and that's a lot more exciting.
I don't see much of DFH these days. Like some others have said, 60 Minute is a solid choice at a restaurant or bar where there aren't too many other options available. I think we still get some 90 Minute here, but that's not one I'd seek out. I always wanted to try Utopias WWS, but at $52 for a four-pack it was a pass. (I did pick up a four-pack of Wake Up WWS for a mere pittance, i.e. $36.) I loved Mixed Media, Midas Touch, Palo Santo, and Noble Rot. That's the kind of stuff that really set them apart, AFAIC.
That reminds me that I have a bottle of Wake Up WWS that I bought as part of a mix-a-six pack. I paid $2 for that bottle. I suppose in hindsight I should have bought more than one bottle. A good beer for a future NBW post. Cheers!
Boston Beer Co. 2023 Annual Report says Dogfish Head is nationally distributed- In most states I imagine they moved the brand to the same distributor(s) which carried SA and the other BBC brands. That's what happened in NJ, which didn't help the now defunct Hunterdon craft distributor, which also had other problems related to its parent company, Sheehan Family Cos. At one point DFH was Hunterdon's largest brand and one of the largest DFH distributors, at the time being a statewide distributor in heavily populated NJ. Curiously, the same BBC AR also notes: Wonder what the deal is there.
For sure at that price! I was getting 4-pks of that, the 2017 oak vanilla WWS, the bourbon barrel WWS, and the 120-min Utopias for $32 with my discount.
We don't get WWS or 120 here because of the ABV limit but when I'm out of state I look for them. As far as the rest of their beers go, occasionally I'd pick up a 19.2 of 90 minute. The only other thing from them I've bought in years has been a 6 pack of 60 min. I would have bought more of their stuff if they had more interesting beers available but they got rid of everything else I liked. So I guess the answer is no, not really.
Since I’m the exemplar for all consumer trends I care about, I don’t typically need data to observe trends in purchasing habits.
Since we are talking Dogfish Head here, I thought some folks might be interested in the below linked video interview with Sam Calagione that was posted 2 hours ago. Cheers!
Not so much after he killed off the Chicory Stout & Indian Brown Ale (which was a brown ale and not, I repeat not, a dark IPA).
If I remember correctly, that Colderest IPA was only in a mix pack. Too bad because that was a dang good IPA and one I’d buy on occasion if it were year-round.
As long as they keep making it I’ll drink 120 Min until I die. Having one beer that I’m forever interested in is more than I can say about most all other breweries so I guess they are still relevant to me. Unless they already stopped brewing it (I drink mostly cellar beers these days), and if so DTM.
...first, I don't see them around much, and second, when they are, it's usually World Wide Stout or maybe 120 Minute IPA, no other variety... ...gone are the days when I could find Bitches Brew, Hellhound, Namaste, Blue Hen, or even Punkin Ale... ...out of sight, out of mind...
