Is this Saturday (3/23/24), unless it's been cancelled again for some reason. There are several local taphouses here in town (PDX) that are holding an Orval Day event. I try to go every year, as it's usually a pretty fun time, with multiple vintages of Orval and other "Orval-like" beers on offer.

Anyone else doing anything for Orval day this year, or has this become too "passe" for most folks these days?

Update: Head to the Impromptu Tasting: Orval thread.

You owe it to yourself to give orval a try. It's a unique and interesting beer. If you can find it fresh it's a surprisingly modern hoppy Belgian ale, as it ages it changes a fair bit and gets somewhat horsey at times. But it's just one of those singular Belgian brews that defies categorization

    !!!
    You must try Orval
    You might not like Orval
    But
    You must try Orval

If I had to name a desert island beer it might very well be Orval

Sadly, as I am my department lead this week, and we have a sold-out show, no Orvaling for me. But, maybe someplace will have some leftovers on Sunday.

Received an email from my local beer bar about their Orval Day plans. Exciting to say the least.

There's a small local brewery that had one last year. They had several vintages. I think I had a 2020 vintage. They also had small pours of some 3 Fonteinen (normally they only sell full bottles). They're doing it again this year so I will be there.

A few places by me are celebrating Orval Day, but I will sadly be out of town. I was in Belgium a month ago and few things compare to people watching while drinking some cellar aged Orval in the Grand-Place.

It's actually the "other" beer geek style - an IPA... just "a very unique one."
Kinda kidding, but mainly serious.

I actually fully agree with this. I think that orval is likely the closest thing any average beer buyer could pick up to the early India pale ales.

@Resistance88 I'm just humoring @zid. It's a great adjunct free stout. A little happier and less roasted malt than we're used to today, but still...

I haven’t seen Orval since moving to Finland, but it’s my knightly duty to attempt to secure a bottle. I already have the proper glass, secured from 't Brugs Beertje over 20 years ago; thanks, Daisy.

You can find a handful at certain beer bars. We've got a couple of Belgian-centric bars too, but nothing extensive. Other than that, I haven't seen much at the Alko locations around me.

Finns like to drink Finnish beer.
