Is Dogfish Head Still Relevant to You?

Colderist was good enough, but doesn’t merit purchasing the pack. At Safeway here they often run a sale on the Dogfish 12-packs for $16.99, so I don’t regret the purchase at that price.

I certainly don't think about Dogfish Head as much as I did 10-12 years ago, but I still see them as a highly relevant brewery. The "extreme" factor aside, I loved DFH when I first got into craft beer because of the uniqueness of each release. I will never forget my first 90 Minute, sharing a bottle of 120 Minute with friends, Black and Blue, Palo Santo Marron, Burton Baton, Raison D'Etre. Nothing else on the market was even close to these beers. It's unfortunate that these days all I look forward to are the fancy barrel-aged one-offs (which are delicious), like BA Palo Santo and the Utopias Barrel-Aged 120 Minute and WWS. I think it's important for the "Only NEIPA and Sours" crowd to know about breweries like DFH, try their unique offerings, and understand how broad and delicious the beer spectrum can be.

They are still relevant to me. My beer preferences are largely stuck in 2005, but I still buy a six pack of 90 Minute a few times a year.

I found a cardboard four pack holder of Palo Santo Marron in the back of a kitchen cabinet last month with two of those bottles and two WWS bottles (I have no recollection of when I got them or placed them there). Had one of the Palo Santo Marrons the other day and it was great.

Of all the beers that I used to drink that were readily available, Indian Brown Ale is the one I probably miss the most.

Their recent Varity pack that included two sours, a pilsner, and 60 min was very nice.

Same here with the Indian Brown Ale. It was very tasty and successful hybrid style.

I tried the Crimson Cru the other night with the highest of hopes -- but no; it didn't work for me.

Not really. Used to be huge fans of their Palo Santo Marron, 120 Minute and a few others. However, with Covid, I just stopped going to bottle shops. I buy primarily local (at breweries) or online (direct from a brewery). The few times that I go into a TotalWine or bottleshop is to get my SN kick (Bigfoot, Celebration).

Don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet but it looks like they recently brewed and bottled Palo Santo but I think it’s only available at the brewery/brewpub.

I 'hear' you. I discussed this beer in a past NBW thread and commented:

    "Overall

This beer is good – very good. It is most definitely not a miss but not exactly a hit either, somewhere in between."

    Won't be a re-purchase for me.

    Cheers!

Sad to say.... not in a VERY long time. Something in the yeast/water, or boil that just turns me off almost EVERY Dogfishead. It's strange and I can't explain it. But here we are.

Are there really any "Off Centered" breweries anymore? DFH still makes good beer even though they discontinued some good ones. I think the craft beer market has changed for the worse in the last 10 years mainly because the market has been saturated with hazy IPA's, Sours and Bourbon Barrel Aged anything. So now all the Older breweries are trying to compete with all the above mentioned style beers so they discontinue some to come out with what's popular. I think that the popularity of these Beers has kind of killed off some of the other styles that made Craft Beer Craft Beer. I think that's kind of sad.

But I still drink DFH all the time. Good Beer is Good Beer.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Exactly what I was thinking.
I'll buy a couple of 120's to have by the fireplace, but that's about it. The good ones you can't find anymore. Ex IBA, Raison d'Extra, ImmortAle, Palo Santo....
Most of what I see from them nowadays is too "off centered" for my taste. I think the WWS is horrible.
Again, as a last resort, 60 or 90 min at a restaurant will do, but not my first choice, but if it's the best offering on the list, it'll do. I'll take almost all of Sam Adams seasonal offerings over DFH any day.
It's a shame, because they have brewed some fantastic beers in the past.

I think there are still a few, but they're small. Brewers like Scratch or Fonta Flora come to mind. Using local ingredients in unusual ways to create flavors unique to their brewery. We have a local nano brewer that makes all sorts of odd brews inspired by his tastes, everything from mild ales to a 9% slightly soured wheat stout to a real pumpkin porter made with smoked pumpkins from his farm.

But that kind of stuff is a niche now that doesn't work as shelf beer in wide distribution anymore

I will say that aged 90 minute is very good. I’m talking years.

    Enjoy

Fonta is my favorite brewery. I love their beers. I don’t know if I would call them off centered. Forest and Main did a Saison last year made with yams and pumpkin tossed in a fire and added to the wort. It was a top 3 beer of the year for me.

    Enjoy

I don't have much experience with them, but what I've had has all been out of the ordinary and very tasty

I thought they all were - or, at least, attempted to be.

But aren't those the kind of beer styles that Caligione thought were "Off-centered"?

I usually buy whatever the 120/WWS variant is each year, but that's about it. I don't really come across much of their other rotational stuff these days. Plus, they don't really makes favs like Palo and Burton anymore. I can see myself still choosing 60/90 Min over other options at a bar though.

I can't tell you the last time I purchased a Dogfish Head beer. If I still had access to (or they made) Saison Du Buff and Festina Peche then yeah I could probably remember the last time I purchased something from them. I think I have a WWS in the beer fridge, but haven't gotten around to it yet. All the beers of theirs that I really enjoyed I can't find anymore Burton Baton, Olde School....
