Heading to Columbus in a month. Planning to go to Forbidden Root and Wolf's Ridge.

I always like to hit one bottle shop in any city I visit, in case I find things I can't get locally and can take home with me. Particularly interested in BA stouts and barleywines (maybe Jackie O's?), if those are available.

Looks like the last bottle shop thread is ~5 years ago. Any recommendations? Thanks!

If you are going to Forbidden Root there is a bottle shop in Westerville (which will be about 5 minutes from Forbidden) called Wine and beer Emporium. It looks kinda shady but has about every Ohio beer that’s in distro.

If you are already going to Wolfs Ridge, Jackie O’s has a brew pub right across the street.

Thanks. I tried checking out Jackie O's site, but didn't see to-go bottle options at their Columbus location. Do they have to-go bottles there?

The last time I was there which was probably 3 months ago they did have some to go options but I did not really look to see what was for sale.
I personally am not huge on the BA Stouts so I’m probably not the best person to give advice on that, but I will say any decent bottle shop in the area will have some bottles of at least there more often produced BA Stouts.

If you give me an area you are staying I can probably give you more options on bottle shops.

We're walking distance from Forbidden Root, so I'll probably try to hit that shop you suggested. Thanks.

Then yes that is probably the best place in that location for take away beers.

If you have the time i suggest you also try a restaurant called Flip Side which should be within walking distance from where you are staying. They generally have some of the best on tap beers in that area.

It's been a few months since I visited as well but Jackie O's on Fourth has always had loads of to-go bottles in my experience, including BA stuff that hasn't or won't hit distribution. I'd definitely recommend checking it out if you're interested in BA stouts and barleywines, especially if you'll be stopping at Wolf's anyway.

It might be worthwhile checking the to-go options listed on their Athens production facility site to get an idea of what they may have, as on a casual glance it looked like they had nearly everything the home base had when I was last there.

I'm not from the area, but several years ago (~7 or 8) I stopped in a bottle shop called Savor Growl. They had a ton of options including Jackie O's and I remember cases of Perrin's No Rules. The Dude Abides.

I'd recommend Perfect Pour in Dublin and Weiland's Market in north Columbus (Clintonville area). I doubt you'll be disappointed. :beers:

They definitely have take away beer as I have gotten beer there a few times. Wolf’s Ridge is nearby as is Hoof Hearted. Have fun.

I’ve always liked the small bottle shop that’s inside the North Market (can’t remember the name). Not the largest selection my any means but usually have a few solid draft options and a handful of nice bottles and cans to go. I always stop there first and then head upstairs with my pour to get some Hot Chicken Takeover… One of my favorite meals in Columbus

Pretty sure I haven't seen Beer Zone/Kenny Road Market mentioned yet. That's another good place to stop at for brews. Palmer's is just down the street from Weiland's, but they don't have as much of a selection.

The Barrel & Bottle. It's been a while since I've been there (probably pre-SCAMdemic) but I always liked the vibe of the place. Great tap list, as I remember.

If you're coming down 23 there is a really nice place in Powell called Ale Wine and Spirits. They usually have a great variety with lots of Jackie O's.

Follow up as of March 2024

    • Jackie O's on Fourth has TONS of to-go options. Entire shelf full of BWs and stouts. Another shelf of sours.
    • Wolf's Ridge Daybreak is amazing! This style is underrepresented.
    • Weiland's market did not have the greatest beer selection. Would not recommend.
    • The Barrel & Bottle selection was worse than Weiland's. To their credit they really don't have the room in a place like this.
    • Savor Growl won me at the best selection with decent prices. Watch out for the dusty bottles though.
One last question. I noticed one place (that I will leave nameless for now) had tons of Anchorage brewing BWs and stouts including many bottles of ADWTD. Does Anchorage really distribute to Ohio? I found it interesting, though maybe purely coincidental, that a number of beers they had also show up in my Tavour feed.

Yes we get a lot of Anchorage beers here, and from what I have seen they just sit and collect dust.

To be fair, it is a grocery store. My only concern is that a lot of the beer is not refrigerated. I've always enjoyed browsing in there and occasionally finding stuff I hadn't seen anywhere else (e.g. Happoshu ).

Anchorage does distribute to Ohio. But considering the price of ADWTD and some of their other brews I'm not surprised that their beers sit around. And unfortunately Weiland's and quite a few other places around here have gone downhill in the past few months. At this point I'd just rather buy non-local beers online or when I make trips out of state. Quite a few of the Columbus beer shops are owned by one group and that's not a good thing.

Is Hoof Hearted brewery only? Or do they distro in parts of Ohio?

later this summer, I’ll be driving from Cincinnati to Cleveland (reds game to guardians game). I already plan to hit fat heads for lunch before the guardians.

On the day I’m driving by hoof hearted, they won’t be open. I remember having konkey dong years ago and I thought it was great.

    thanks in advance

Mack’s beverage in Parma gets semi-regular drops from hoof. Open a bunch of labels at once. Check their socials before you arrive to see if something was received recently. About a 15 minute drive from fat heads Middleburg without having to get on the highway.

circle-A gets some as well but not the same quantity that Mack’s gets. A little southeast of fat heads.

can also work in a stop at Masthead when in downtown Cleveland. I normally park up by there (cheaper parking) and stop before or after for some drafts and carry out.
