Welcome one and all to New Beer Sunday #998! That's right, just two weeks away from the flip of the New Beer Sunday odometer. Hope you can all join us to celebrate.

So many fun reviews and BIF reveals to read pushed this planned later morning tasting beyond noon. As noted yesterday, this is the first of three singles I picked up from the first (as far as I'm aware) Forest & Main drop. This one is a NEIPA, the two I'm planning for next week are of the traditional styles they are more known for.

    Forest & Main Majorette

Can Notes: Single can purchased at room temperature at Beer on the Wall for $5.26 on 3/15/24, refrigerated at home until cracking open this afternoon.. No can date, but dropped from the brewery within the week of purchase, so hoping it's fresh. 16 oz, 6.7% ABV, Hazy IPA hopped with Citra and Mosaic. Keep cold, drink fresh. Brewed and Packaged by Forest & Main Brewing Company, 241 N Main Street, Ambler, Pennsylvania.

Appearance: Poured 2/3 of the can into a teku glass. Murky tan yellow golden base, visible sustained carbonation viewed atop and along the sides, with a creamy full generous head lingering for a few minutes before creating a transformation from tiny bubbles to a creamy full cover over most of the base and soapy lacing clinging in its wake. 4.25

Aroma: Citrus, tangerine medium plus strength, enjoying what I can gather from the blend. 3.75

Taste: Citrus, tangerine covered behind a grapefruit, all feel a bit muted, not sure if it's age or by design, but either way I'm enjoying. Tangerine gains sharpness as I reach the halfway park, better as this warms. Landing on tang drank as my overall impression 3.5

Mouthfeel: Sweetness somewhat contained by a bitterness, but still wins out. Drinks stronger than the listed ABV, but could be my weakening tolerance. Faint gentle persistent carbonation adds depth to a light to light medium body. Tang drank finish. 3.25

Overall: This is a good NEIPA. Not sure if this is the best version of it, or fresher can would have improved. Not adjusting the rating as there is no date can. Would give it a try again and adjust if necessary with a fresher take. Good offering as is, though likely not a repeat. 3.5

Not a bad effort for a brewery known more for their traditional styles, which I look forward to exploring next week.

I've been enjoying reading all of the BIF activity, and hope it keeps up over throughout April.

Holy guano Batman! This is the freshest beer I've ever purchased retail. Canned 4/1/24 and scored it on the 5th still cold in the cardboard flat sittin' on the floor. Amazing! Well, here she is:
Modist Green Greens DDH NEIPA 7.3%
    4.35/5 rDev +4.8%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

16 oz can canned 4/1/24 into a nonic pint glass.
L: SRM 2.5 Pours hazy dull gray orange with a cookie-shaped 1/4" white head, lightly carbonated, VG head retention settling to skin and edge foam, medium perforated webbed lacing with light banding.
S: Fruity, herbal, hoppy, green melon, citrus pith.
T: Green melon, melon rind, citrus, pineapple, lemon grass, wheat, a touch of yeast, it is lightly tangy in the finish with some wheat, bread notes and pith in the aftertaste, it has a little bit of a linger. It is comfortably tangy & tart.
F: Lightly brisk, gently pillowy with subtle froth, medium-bodied juicy feel with a medium-long finish that is slightly drying.
O: Wow! What a fresh taste of fruits. A bit like a fruit cocktail. Its beautiful finish expresses dancing rind, wheat, and bread notes. A brilliant blend with identifiable flavors and hidden 7.3% ABV. It is outstanding in its style.

    Good afternoon NBW
I didn't deliberate much on a 19.2oz can of Belgian style beer for $6. I did not expect to have to enter it in the BA database, but it did not hit through multiple checks, so it's in there now with some info lifted from Untappd.
It's hard to see on the can, but the name is Azazel and the brewer actually references Duvel in the description.

19.2oz can with an unreadable stamp poured into an Duvel glass at fridge temp 8.3% ABV 35 IBU per can/Untappd. The beer pours bright pale gold with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. Minimal spotty lacing. The aroma is mild with soft, sweet pale malt, clove, pear and honey. The taste is semisweet pale malt with more pear, clove and gentle, but firm, floral bitterness. The feel is medium bodied with above average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Overall, very, very good Belgian pale strong ale.

I think Wiseacre falls into my category of "do everything well" brewers. I'm glad that they send a little beer up from Tennessee to Indiana occasionally.

    Cheers all!

Good afternoon all! Happy to kick off my contributions to the NBW/S BIF #18 Share weekend - many thanks to @Roguer for the beers.

First up is a beer that @Roguer knew I wanted to try as its origins started with Goldfinger Brewing here in my hometown. A year or so ago Goldfinger Brewing and Live Oak Brewing brewed a collaboration called American Zoigl. As part of the collab release Goldfinger hung up a zoigl star at their beer window.

After the release a number of breweries reached out to Goldfinger about getting the star sent to them and brewing a zoigl lager - and so, the wandering star was born. You can read about it here: https://allaboutbeer.com/american-zoigl/
and there is a podcast with Tom Beckman the head brewer and owner of Goldfinger here that touches on it: https://share.transistor.fm/s/d836aff1 and here: https://beerandbrewing.com/podcast-episode-335-tom-beckmann-of-goldfinger/

Lots of good stuff there for lager fans!

Anyway, the most recent stop for the Zoigl star was Fox Farm Brewery during which they brewed their American Zoigl.

Pours a lovely, crystal clear burnished gold color. Thick, frothy off white head forms on the beer when it is poured before dissipating. A thin residual film remains on the beer along with rings of foam on the glass. Aroma has notes of cracker malts, some light dough and a touch of white bread. On top of that there are notes of honey, green grass, some light floral notes, with a slight peppery spicy note to it.

Taste follows the nose with notes of crackey malts, white bread, lemon grass, spicy, peppery hops, and some mild bitterness on the back end. It is a lovely American lager. Feel is light, crisp, kind of refreshing. Dry finish with moderate carbonation. It's the kind of beer you start drinking and all of the sudden it is gone.

Overall a lovely lager - exactly what I would expect from Fox Farm. Thank you Andrew for the beer - this did not dissapoint!

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5 = 4.34/5 rDev +1.4%

I’m baaack! (Cue the Jack Nicholson reference)
Got the brakes replaced and lines replaced and air in the tires so it was time for a beer.
This one came courtesy of @micada in a trade not long ago. He saw it on my wants list and came through.
This was sent to me by Micada in a trade and has been one of my “wants” for some time.
Poured coffee color with a proud tan head of very dense foam which leaves sheets of lacing.
The taste is an excellent combination of coffee roast flavor with a touch of herbal hops, the roast is surprisingly deep considering this is a lager and sessionable to boot.
The feel is almost soft, the carbonation adds a smoothness instead of the normal bitter edge. No idea how that’s possible.
OA, so glad to be able to have tried this!

Mob Craft Brewery, Radix Fermentation, and Supermoon Beer Company The Frightener Brett-conditioned Belgian-style quad. A Milwaukee, Wisconsin, collaboration. The look is dark brown, with a light-brown two-inch foam lid. The smell is brown sugar, lemon, almond, biscuit, funk, molasses, and fig. The taste is doughy caramel, root beer, raisin, plumb, and dark fruit. The mouthfeel is creamy, full, smooth, velvety, and dense, with medium-high carbonation. Overall, this is a nice Belgian-style quad. I plan to visit Supermoon Beer Company soon, to see what else they have going on.

Have a great nbs. I haven't been around in a while but it's been a busy month. Lost a cat(steg) and job, but got married yesterday. I want to go into data engineering and they are paying my replacement 33% more so I am glad I got out of there anyways. It's good to move around and keep yourself learning. Me and Julia keep reading more books. Just finishing Washington by Ron chernow while we have been running back and forth in between Ohio and NC.

I got some great pics from the wedding so will have to make a sharable album soon

Alaskan wildness. Overall good hoppy blonde. Aromas and flavors of lemon, orange, melon, wood, peppercorn, pine, cracker, bread, pear, apple, herbal, floral, grass, yeast earthiness. A bit of a musky wet dog nose(dirty lines?). Medium pine rind woody bitter finish. Medium carb and body, fairly crisp clean refreshing finish. balanced bready grainy malt and sticky resinous hop mouthfeel. Lingering resin dryness and minimal hop astringency. Balanced clean malt and noble hop flavors. Good style example. 3.58/5

Buck Buck Juice a 9% ABV Imperial IPA from Zero Gravity Brewing in Burlington Vermont This is also my 1st brew from Zero Gravity. Poured from a 24 oz can into a tall tulip its hazy gold with a thick white head. The aroma is mixed fruit. The taste is the same as the aroma except a peach flavor stands out a bit. The mouthfeel is light the finish is sweet. Overall Buck Buck is a juice bomb and not my cup of tea. There is no malt presence. If you enjoy fruity beers look this one up.

Golden color with good white cap, intense aroma of Tropical hops and sweet malt.

When first opening the can hops fill the air with a rich scent that quickly shows the same intensity on first sip. Malt is strong as well but hops are large and in charge. I do find a tropical influence, mango, pineapple, that sort of thing with the hops, and the malt and hops are well matched.

Outsize flavor completely covers up the 9.5%, not a hint of alcohol, just a lot of malt/hop goodness.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Swiggers and commentators. When I drove down the shore on Friday afternoon, I stopped to buy a South Jersey IPA for the weekend. I was excited to see week-old cans of Tonewood's Mas Fuego, the DIPA version of its well-regarded IPA, Fuego. When I grabbed a pack from the cooler I reached back to find a colder one and in my normal state of oblivion paid for it. When I got home, I noticed that I had bought DDH Fuego, which I've reviewed before. The can art is almost identical and they must have mixed them up at the store. Now, DDH Fuego is a fine IPA and I enjoyed it but I went back and made sure I bought the right cans. The only difference in the recipe is the addition of Chinook hops to the base of Citra, Mosaic, and Simcoe. This version tastes a lot like the DDH variant but it's a little spicier and sweeter.

It pours a hazy, golden-orange with almost a finger cap of bright white foam and thick, clinging lacing. A very attractive pour. The fragrant nose includes lemon, grapefruit, a whiff of pineapple, and soft floral hops. The taste is more complex with notes of sweet tropical and stone fruit, including peach, along with the tart, slightly bitter citrus. The malt base is subdued but there is a pronounced pine sap presence. The addition of Chinook hops contributes an earthy, slightly spicy element. All of the flavors are big and bold. There is a strong, clean bitterness throughout. Its mouth feel is outstanding: well-bodied and creamy with pleasant carbonation, and the 8.2% ABV gives it a big DIPA character without overwhelming. It drinks surprisingly easily. Overall, Mas Fuego is an excellent Imperial IPA.

Often, when a popular IPA is "brewed up," it tastes like a completely different ale. Good examples are Double Two Hearted and Double Nugget Nectar. Not in this case, however. It tastes a lot like the original Fuego and the DDH variant but bigger and slightly sweeter. I like it a lot!

    4.33/5 rDev -0.9%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

I think that Tonewood is an underrated brewery. I haven't had one of its beers that I didn't enjoy.
