Beast & Barley from Crooked Stave. American barleywine without barrel aging or adjuncts. 10% ABV.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours an orange with lots of small chunks throughout. Minimal head. The nose is pine needles, slight toffee, peaches, and a bit of maple.

The taste is fantastic. I was a bit worried about the floaties throughout, but I let them settle before tasting. A beautiful mix of hops and caramel. Definitely up the Bigfoot alley. Pine, mint, toffee, oak, a touch of nuts, leather, and a bit of rhubarb. Really refreshing.

Mouthfeel is pretty light, with a funky hop aftertaste.

Pours a clear, dark brown color; appears a opaque, mahogany red in the glass; one-finger thick head, lasting, dense and creamy texture; light tan color. Rich, dense aroma; tons of vanilla enmeshed with sweet chocolate and cocoa. The taste amplifies the notes of the smell; rich milk chocolate and lip-smacking vanilla sweetness; delicate bourbon notes in the background. Heavy body; dense and chewy with a slippery smoothness.

This barrel aged barleywine oozes vanilla and rich chocolate while the bourbon takes a back seat to the overall flavor. And that is what makes this beer so fine - the base beer and vanilla are the highlights while the barrel aging adds just the right, subtle boozy edge.

I'll follow @beergoot with another barleywine from Bottle Logic. Collective Comprehension. An English barleywine aged in bourbon and finished with toasted coconut and almonds.

Huge notes of toffee, bourbon, chocolate, raisins, brown sugar, coconut, almonds, and some vanilla. A fantastic beer!

This one is so damn good. Obviously pours a completely still murky brown. Non carbonated and oxidized Barleywines hit it out of the park every time. It's sweet and boozy in the nose, tons of madeira wine, burnt caramel, molasses, toasted walnut, and oak. The fruity notes are more present in taste, leading with dates, madeira wine, raisin, toabacco, old leather, fig, and light chocolate. The swallow presents oxidized sherry, oak, black cherry, fig, dark chocolate, and a touch of herbal black tea. It's fascinating how easy this goes down given both the abv and complexity. I need to try the other variants at some point but they're crazy expensive lol

I've tried a couple others and this one is the best of them, never had anything like it.

Enjoying this one from Fonta Flora, definitely more port forward than bourbon. Pretty tasty brew.
    Cheers!

Decadence. Honey, light molasses, butterscotch, brown sugar, apple pie, and more. Magnificent.

I have about 10 of these in my fridge. Five from 2023 and the rest from this year. To me it tasted like a little more balanced version of Bigfoot, I really liked it also. I had no intention of getting that many, but they sat in the cold box at a local store so I would pick one or two up every time I went there, i’m guessing a lot of people avoided it, since it was not barrel aged, but that’s the way I like them. This and Bigfoot are the only two non-barrel aged barley wines that I’ve seen recently.

I love 'em barrel aged but I do wish there were more traditional options around. You're lucky to have access to this one. If you trade, try to get some Gratitude from East End put of Pittsburgh. Reasonably priced 4packs and it's a gem.

Thanks for the recommendation, I don’t trade, but if I ever end up in Pittsburgh, I will grab some. I just saw up above that Beersnake said that Beast and Barley from Crooked Stave is another Bigfoot adjacent non-barrel aged barley wine. That’s when I may be able to get my hands on.

It’s a good one to try for sure! I also really enjoy the non-BA barleywines and always try to get them when I can!
