Is Dogfish Head Still Relevant to You?

Original Squall (bottle conditioned 75 Minute) was so good.

 

Are they still relevant to me, sadly not really.

Which for me is quite the shame because they were what really got me into craft beer. It was the mid 00's and I came across 60 minute and quickly to the 90 minute. Then one night a buddy and I took a flyer on their Palo Santo Marron. That beer completely changed what I thought about craft beer. Before that I was ridding the hoppy bitter ipa wave. Palo, took me aside and showed how much more there was.

After that I because a huge fan of Dog Fish. Burton baton, indian brown, chicory stout, yum! A friend gave me a worldwide stout, even better! I chased down 120 minute, loved that. Stumbled across Immort, loved that as well. Even got their 25th anniversary Higher Math. But as more local craft breweries open, which was a good thing, Dog Fish got sidelined. Then they sold to Sam and most of the beers I loved were shelved 1 by 1.

I still have a couple of bottles of bruton, immort, palo, and a raison d'extra. I need to drink them soon, but I've bene putting it off because once their gone it's an end of an era, for me at least.

Of course I'll grab a 120 minute or world wide stout if I see it. Goes double for the utopias version. And, I'm glad 60 and 90 minute are still out there. But, I've tired a lot of their new stuff in the last few years and they have lost their magic.

So I'll raise my old Dog Fish goblet, which they stopped making for some reason, and toast to what once was and to, hopefully, what can be once again.

 

I remember grabbing a case of Palo knowing nothing but it’s a brown ale from DFH, it’s probably great. It rang up at over $60. I was very surprised and I put it back and grabbed the Indian brown ale for $28 or so. It was years before I actually had a Palo. I had no idea.

This thread has got me thinking. Maybe I should give DFH 60-90 another run.

 

I'd say, as we hit page 15, they certainly have some relevance to Beer Advocate users...

I had Palo Santo Marron for the first time, I think, last night. It is such a cool unique and distinct beer, its like an amalgamation of a beer. First the smell intimidates you, quite a decent amount of "beware I got alcohol in me," but then all sorts of cool stuff start coming out as it warms; but the coolest part is the taste and mouthfeel; hits like a brown ale at first, but immediately it morphs into some stout like concoction but without all the chocolate and coffee notes; it is so rich and luscious, woody spice, vanilla, roast and this un-sweet driven stickiness on the finish.

So many of you mentioned this one that I was happy to be able to get my hands on some, thanks to fate, and family

That was part of my bachelor weekend 10 years ago...just a peaceful quiet weekend of good beer, brother and a few friends.

I have always loved DFH creativity and daring. Some really memorable beer experiences as a result! The ancient beer recipe series, world wide stout: all of them, aging the 120, good times.
But since moving away from the midatlantic we don’t get as diverse of offerings, so they aren’t as relevant to me as they once were, as they say, geography is destiny.
That being said if we got wild, weird, out there one offs out here in IL, I would absolutely try them! DFH makes good and more importantly unique beer and new memories await!

 

One of my favorites. Waiting for the 120 to arrive. Pricy but worth it for those special occasions. Four pack for $40.50.

 

DFH would be a lot more relevant to me if I could acquire four packs of 120, even at that price. Love that beer. Lucky if I can find it on tap around here.

 

I use to pick up the pumpkin ale when it was out and the 60 Minute IPA sometimes. I really enjoyed the IPAs For The Holidays pack they had but I didn’t see it this year.

 

Dogfish Head 90 is one of the best IPA’s made (which is confirmed by Beer Advocate reviews). Then Samuel Adams purchased and it has become much more difficult to find. And I don’t even think they make the 120 which was a nice treat from time to time. Congratulations to the original owners of Dogfish Head for cashing out, but it’s not been good for Dogfish Head fans.

 

They definitely still make the 120, seems fairly ubiquitous too based on the responses in this thread.

 

120 is a weird and unique beer. It's been years since I've had it. But you've got to give credit for making such a singular beer, it doesn't surprise me at all that it has such rabid fans
