Back and sharing a barleywine with this illustrious thread!
this is Pile of Skulls barrel aged barleywine (13.5%) from Skookum Brewing in Arlington, Washington.... Beer is courtesy of @zdraco Thank you! I may have mentioned this but Skookum has delivered a lot of hits for me and next time I travel out west they are surely on my list of places to visit. Seems under the radar and Ive really enjoyed their offerings.

    onto my review:
Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter. no date stamping that I can see on the label or can.
the beer pours a dark cola brown in the glass with short-lived fizzy beige head that is barely a surface covering at its peak.
Fades to nothing soon after the pour.
Aroma is robust! WOO! Big molasses and brown sugar with some raisins and some whiskey notes. A little fusol booze is in there, but hops are absent on the nose.
First sip reveals a medium body with fairly sticky texture and gentle carbonation. Beer definitely coats my lips and palate on each sip. Sort of sweet coating remains after a sip.
Flavor is similar to nose with molasses and brown sugar covering raisins and some whiskey hits. Sweeter whiskey notes, not peppery ones. The beer isnt really too hot or fusol booze and a whisky soaked raisin note lingers after each sip. No hop character anywhere that I can find.
This is a tasty barrel aged barleywine that is sort of syrupy and fruity and has good complexity but dangerously hides its booze.
Would gladly drink another can if given the option.

Enjoying Jackie O's Endolith 2022 vintage picked up at the brewery last May. This is very nice as i am getting notes of toffee and raisins. Not much barrel presence overtly, just some warming with each rounded sip. One really can't go wrong with J.O.'s!
    Cheers!

Hope you didn’t spill any on the granite top. One never knows what might start growing there.

This might be breaking the rules, but I don’t agree. This is a barleywine. First time I’ve ever had a 120 actually, and it’s the Utopias barrel aged version. I like it. If it was 12% it would probably be amazing. It’s just too hot. It’s about a year and 1 month old, but wouldn’t mind trying it after 5 years, but that’s quite the investment

Barrel Aged Barley Wine Ale from Kiitos Brewing in Salt Lake City. Grabbed this last fall as I drove through SLC. Glad to finally try it!

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours a dark and murky brown with zero head. The nose is very mild, which is quite surprising. Getting a burnt brown sugar and toffee note. Not a bunch more. Maybe some bread and a hint of clove.

The taste is definitely interesting. The barrel appears here for sure. Still getting that clove note, along with brown sugar, raisins, and toffee. Some of the bourbon comes through here, along with a note of vanilla. Crème brulée is definitely there as well. Really nice.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a nice semi-sweet toffee/custard aftertaste.

This has been the year I go back to buying packs instead of singles. Hard to find anything package that way to scratch my barley wine itch though... Revisiting this one for the first time in a long time, just rated it never reviewed it.

It isn't quite Ryeway to Heaven but it's dang good and readily available. Lots of caramel and a strong woody, booze note. Some chocolate, raisin, and a little banana too. Might get another pack.

I've seen this but didn't know it was a barleywine as the label just says "rye ale". Now I need to go spend more money.

it’s not technically a bw. it would be listed on here as “rye beer” but it definitely has some bw characteristics. this thread has essentially turned into “any strong ale besides imperial stout” thread (which is totally fine - most of the other strong ales besides imperial stouts have a lot of overlapping qualities).

Yet again I was led astray by the Internet.

Honestly I was mulling over getting this a while back as it looked interesting. Maybe I'll post it in that imperial stout thread, just to be annoying.

Yeah, like @Luscious_Malfoy says it's not listed as a barleywine but I'd call it a rye barleywine. I'm guessing you'll like it, looking forward to reading your thoughts.

Apart from Old Stock (not really a BW) and Bigfoot, there aren't many packs of barleywines around these parts. The majority are single bottles.

To make things slightly easier, you can keep in mind that stouts aren't ales.

Well... to be clear - some people would say that, while others would obviously disagree. That's how these things work. Personally, I don't view porters and stouts as ales. (I don't subscribe to the "every beer is a lager or ale" thinking.) :scream: (Heck, I even think that lagered barley wines or barley wines made with "lager" yeast are ales.)

Maybe @Resistance88 will join the side of thinking that stouts aren't ales if it encourages him to draw even bigger lines between his idea of good and bad. Why am I creating more division rather than unification?

    Divide and conquer

    My new rules:
    1)Imperial Stouts aren't ales
2)If i don't like it it's not an Imperial Stout.

not sure i agree but also not sure i have given the "it either has to be an ale or a lager" argument much thought. that does lead me to amend my statement though: imperial porters definitely lean closer to imperial stout taste profiles than barleywines. cheers!
