    3) Coffee is not as an adjunct as it is delicious and life sustaining.

New Park Brewing- Cypress: Apple Brandy barrel

Barleywine aged in apple brandy barrels. From 2022. You can absolutely tell it’s a unique barrel (not bourbon). Can get a slight hint of apple. Very good

Revisiting this one. Boss Ryeway from Revolution. My original review was not as positive as most. I gave it a 4/5. The taste was nutmeg, vanilla, clove, toffee, maple, brown sugar, cinnamon, and rye spice. It's a bit syrupy and artificial tasting. A bit of cold medicine. This is really good, but it's nothing spectacular to me. Aftertaste is somewhat medicinal.

    My current assessment:

Honestly, my original notes are pretty spot on. I'm not getting as much syrup and artificial tasting, but it's quite harsh. Paint thinner note for sure. I don't know, I just don't think this is my cup of tea (or beer!). It's crazy because I like rye and I like beer. Another follow up: this tastes really good after it warms up a lot. The sharpness fades a lot.

Binkie Claws from Hair of the Dog + De Molen. Barleywine that comes in at 13.4% ABV. I've had this before and I loved it. No noise when the cap comes off. The nose is insane. Stone fruit, toffee, port, tobacco, and leather.

The taste is actually a bit oxidized compared to fresh. A slight harsh note, but still that wonderful fruit and toffee. Smoke, red wine, oak.

Does the oxidation outweigh the increased flavor due to aging? Is this barleywine simply better when fresh? Cheers.

I really do think this was better when fresh. I was a bit disappointed. I don't think any flavors increased with aging. I think it changed, and not really for the better.

I’m definitely a drink beer fresh guy, but even I have to admit that some beers take to aging. The number of them is small but definitely is a non-zero number.

Absolutely! I will always say that Bigfoot improves a bit with age, along with a few others.

Would you perhaps rather say the beer changes, or is it objectively better? I have friends that swear Expedition stout is better.

I’m on the fence. Some get better, some simply change, and some go bad.

Well, there’s no way one can say it gets objectively better.

Regarding Bigfoot, I'm in the camp that essentially prefers it un-aged. Obviously there are other camps though. I think the beer has the potential to hold up really well, but "holding up" is just in comparison to the heights of it being fresh. This isn't a law though. I've really enjoyed some aged bottles. Keep in mind that not all bottles age the same, particularly with regard to aging conditions.

I have used brewers guidelines to inform my brewing and expectations when trying a new style. As close to an objective standard as there is. YMMV. Cheers.

Ah. Ok. If you are talking about brewer intent, then Sierra Nevada releases Bigfoot when they think it’s ready... which is after about a month of conditioning. But they also designed the beer to hold up to aging... and they sell it aged as well. Some people on the SN team prefer it fresh, while some prefer it aged. So in the end, if you are looking for brewer guidelines with Bigfoot, you will find all the leeway you need to drink it according to your subjective preference.:slight_smile: If you want to do what Ken Grossman does, drink it fresh.

I don't think there is anything about tasting beer that is objective. Even quantitative differences in beer variables are sensed differently among people (based on one's physiology, mood, age, and food consumed prior to tasting, etc.). So, I always say do what you want and enjoy!

Been meaning to officially rate this one for a while and was inspired by your post. Love the dark fruit theme but this could run a drag racer in a 1/4-mile race, agree this should sit another 5 years!
Just checked my non-BA 120 Minute review and i found it outstanding at just over 6 years...so for science i will put a calendar reminder to revisit in 2029 assuming my liver is fully functional.
    Cheers!

Prodigality from Jackie O's. 2022 bottle. Barleywine aged in bourbon barrels. comes in at 12% ABV. My current impression aligns nicely with my original notes just over a year ago. This one hasn't gotten better (@Blogjackets ) but it hasn't gotten worse either. It held its ground, which is what I was hoping for!
