Its literally what most west coast breweries are doing with a lot of their ipas these days.

"Bright IPA" would be behind "Juicy IPA" in the new style race (I am against both as new styles) as much as I've seen the latter term on the shelves these days.

Haven’t the vast majority of US breweries been doing this for the past 14 years or whenever the “modern” hops were developed.

Just call me little miss pissy. All I really want is a nice Earthy bitter hoppy clear IPA. I am good with grapefruit being pulled from hops but not juice. I just bought the Torpedo pack and will see how that goes. I also grabbed the SN Magnum Redux IPA. I enjoyed the original. I am not interested in all these non bitter fruit forward IPA.

Maybe these should have a category of non IPA. What is an IPA anyhow today? Seems anything can be called IPA. I remember IPA being clear hoppy bitter and earthy.

    Enjoy

I understand what they are going for but this description is much more reminiscent of breweries like Green Cheek, Slice, North Park, and Ghost Town. I wonder what breweries they were specifically inspired by? Brujos has made beers like this but they are very recent.

Oh good, it's long been a consideration of mine that there simply aren't enough beer style names.

They haven't created a new style. It's a marketing/branding technique for them to stand out from the pack.. I've seen "murky" ipa and "blurry" ipa which is just another way of presenting a hazy/neipa. The market is flooded with competitors and they need you to try their beers.. you can't fault them for it, I guess?

Annoyingly the "West Coast IPA" descriptor has been somewhat repurposed over the years to just mean not hazy. Originally it denoted assertive bitterness and minimal sweetness. These days I see it attached to a lot of beers like this, which I've come to refer to as Modern IPAs. Fairly clear, the flavor profile is generally fruity, though they can absolutely have resinous sides as well, usually lighter malts, with a little sweetness but nowhere near juice bomb hazys. The big thing is that the bitterness is a lot smoother. There's still plenty of IBUs to keep things balanced, but they don't punch you in the tongue.
Nothing groundbreaking here, this style has been around for at least a few years. They might have just been exposed to it and decided to give their version it's own style name to help differentiate it. I can kinda see it becoming a future subcategory for competitions like GABF which already has a ton of them. On here I'm happy to lump it under the general American IPA category.

Haha. Yeah, as I was further contemplating this modern IPA style shake-up, I concluded we should either just have it be pale ale/single IPA/double IPA/triple IPA and then trust the brewer to put tasting notes on the label/description, or just keep going down this road of trying to match certain flavor profiles with certain types of names

Bright IPA lives across the street from American Pilsner. Ha! :beers:

Agreed. And while you're at it, maybe stop with the PNW style pils, WC pils, French style pils, etc.

Yeah. One downside of the craft sector’s current lager embracement is the infiltration of craft culture into pilsner - the constant need for something “new” to sustain interest and the overemphasis on using hops to create categories.

I enjoy Yellow Rose, it’s one of the better distributed IPA’s here in Texas. But definitely not something I would call revolutionary or representative of a new style.

Slightly disagree on that, was there any other brewery using Mosaic in Texas at the time (coming out in 2012 or 2013, I can't remember), and as a SMASH IPA? Every brewery around me was making SMASH IPA's after Yellow Rose. Talk about a sub style, maybe that should be a new style ha...oh no, lets not do that.
