I have some extra Westvl. 12 and wanted to trade for some fresh Pliny. Considering the various factors, like the cost and availability of each, and the fact that there is a lot of Westy around right a now, what do you think is a fair/appropriate number of Plinys to ask for in exchange for say 2 Westlv. 12's?

    Thanks
    Ryan

Six-ish. Pliny's $4.50 to $6 a bottle, Westy 12 was about $15 per bottle in the Brick (give or take) and is around $20 per bottle when importing direct from Belgium.

Any more than six strikes me as profiteering...

    1 for 3 x Pliny and 1 for 4 x Heady for a showdown. Works $4$ closely enough also.

Six? Really? Damn. I would have thought 3 or 4 at most. Also, OP would be shipping one bottle and their target would be shipping a heavier box back, so you have to take that into account, right?

That's a really good point. But I think 3 Plinys for 1 westy is more than fair (OP asked about Pliny value of 2 Westys). It would be a real good idea for the Westy trader to add some extras to make up volume.

Failure to read on my part. That makes more sense.

Trouble is, I don't think you'll find many people who can lay hands on 6 bottles of Pliny at a time. (Even 3 for just one of the Westys might be a stretch.)

That all depends. It's usually pretty easy to get a full 6-bottle limit from Toronado. If you get to City Beer or Whole Foods on a Wednesday afternoon, they're swimming in it, and the brewpub almost always has some (which is helpful if you're trading with someone who lives in Santa Rosa).

I know of a few stores where I can get 6+ most every day.

Wow... it's 1-2 bottle limits everywhere around here and they sell out each month's delivery in a couple hours.

Yeah, because you live in Portland. Of course it's easier to get closer to the source.

The "rare factor" isn't considered here. I haven't found Westy less than $50 a bottle shipped from belgiuminabox.com, and even then it's pretty hard to find elsewhere. It is FAR easier to get Pliny, and simply trade some locals for it.

If it is 2 Westy's and no extras I would say 5 Pliny's to make up a little of the shipping weight. If extras are added to even up volume 6 Pliny is fair. We got a lot of the Westy bricks in Northern California so it is not that rare right now.

Place by my house said I can let them know if I want extra Pliny and I can probably get a case with their shipment since I'm about 90 minutes from the brewery. Other than that, I can get up to 12 normally unless its Christmas or NY. Then it's 4, limit 2 for everyone else

I would say 1/0. That is to say, don't trade westy for Pliny. If you want Pliny offer some locals for it, and hold onto the westy to drink yourself.

    agree.

There are so many other things you could trade for Pliny. Looking in your area, I'd think Terrapin, Sweetwater and Cigar City would be good enough.

3 bottles of Pliny per or 1 bottle of JD Blackbeerd.
