I was just entering a new beer and came to a conundrum.

Label listed it as an IPA, but it was clearly a NEIPA in look and taste. Had I not looked at the label I would have said this is a hazy.

So I ask the experts, when entering a new beer like this one, should I have labeled it NE Style IPA or IPA like the label says?

    I entered as label sayy.

I would enter it as the style the brewery states.

When the label or brewer’s website makes a claim, I go with what they call it. Then let my review speak for itself.

If it looks likes duck, and quacks like a duck…

    I say NEIPA here.

    Cheers!

The brewer always sets the style....no exceptions (as much as you'd like to do it).

Yeah, if the label doesn’t say “hazy” or “murky” or “New England” or “ugly,” enter it as an American IPA and then give it a shitty score.

My two cents: Tree House doesn't list their IPAs as New-England style, yet we clearly know what they're brewing. Same w/ Fidens.

Out of curiosity, what is the beer?

Definitely go with what the label says

If someone wanted to call that a session IPA, I'd let them have it. However, if you're going to classify that as an American IPA, I have some waterfront property in the middle of the Sahara. I'll give you a great deal, too.

P.S. I am clearly in the minority here. I say leave it as is for now.

I had that conversation too! Should be a Session NEIPA

A neipa is an ipa. It's just one of the substyles this site's database uses.

For the purposes of this site it sounds like it would be best as a neipa, and that is still in alignment with the brewer's claim.

Hell, Troon apparently labels all of their beers "hoppy ale" but you can see that they are neipa from a mile away

I listed it as an American IPA. I will let the moderators change it if they choose to. Just getting the feel for however else would handle it. I leaned more towards Session....

I'm with you on this one. Although I say that we generally defer to the brewery when it comes to style, in my world this is a consistent exception.

I add the beer as the style the brewer prefers. However, I then note my differing perspective in my review.

For all the people saying "add it add the style the brewer says!" I'd encourage you to check the style list.

India Pale Ale (IPA) isn't a style option in the ba database. So you have to use your discretion on the appropriate sub style if the brewer only offers IPA

Another problem with Satan’s piss. Deciding if the chlamydia or 2.0 specific gravity is more flavorful.

The default is to use whatever the brewer provides we consumers and drop it into whatever style on BA makes the most sense. In this case, which I've seen before, if a brewer is calling their beer an IPA, but it's definitely an NEIPA, it should be added to NEIPA.

Is "American ipa" the default assumption it a brewer just says "ipa"?
