Price does not effect appearance, smell, taste, drinkability, or body. If you want to mention value, either positive or negative, in your write-up, fine. But in no way should price have any sway in the numerical scores.

It does effect your overall drinking experience so it makes sense that it would manifest in that score

Reviews are pretty much this for me. I wouldn't necessarily agree with the "no one cares" part, a lot of people purchase beers based on reviews. But reviews, whether beer or food, are just one person's opinion- there are millions of us out there and we all have one.

Bottom line is that we all have different tastes so just go out and try that shit yourself!

Sorry but I need way more validation than that

I don't get too rattled about it...people's tastes are different...I can usually see through someone intentionally flaming a beer and genuinely not caring for the flavor profile

No it doesn't. As someone upthread mentioned, what about when you don't know the price, like a gift? If you don't know what it costs, it doesn't affect your score.

Well naturally, if someone gives me a beer, I immediately look up the price so I know how important I am to the person who gave it to me.

The sum can be greater than the whole of its parts.

I mean, I'll share that old beer quote again, "the best beer is a free beer." The cost of beer has a long history of impacting our experience. And it's well known that we experience the same beer differently in different settings

Of course, the less you know about a beer the more "pure" your assessment will be. That's why beer competitions use blind tasting to assess entrants. But as a consumer everything about the beer, the brewery and their reputation, the marketing on the packaging, the place and time you acquire/consume it, the cost (including if that cost is zero), and all kinds of other factors do impact your experience of that beer.

As a consumer facing database that people regularly point to as being a major source of intel that informs purchasing choices this site's reviews are particularly well suited to have perceived value playing a role in the overall assessment.

Please don’t compare beers to movie plot lines or some other nonsensical, unrelated personal relationships with former acquaintances that tell the reader nothing about the beer. It wastes everyone’s time even though you apparently find it entertaining

I was reading some of the exchanges about the effect of cost on overall score. I will say that cost definitely impacts my enjoyment and in my reviews I will note the influence of cost on my selected overall score. The other day I had a great beer that cost more than 3x more than beers i liked nearly as much. I will NEVER write “ this beer is stupidly expensive and I would never buy it again but it gets a 4.75 anyway”. Sorry, but the overall score will be reduced, and my review will state why.

Then why have an overall score? Overall score is meant to consider experience not captured by look, smell, flavor, feel, right? If it is only an average of the first 4, then why bother with it? I also consider how well my experience matches the can description. if the can says dank and I get ripe tropical fruit, expect a downgrade.

That's fine, but the price has zero influence on what's in the glass.

maybe one solution is to rename “overall” to “other considerations” to make it more clear that “overall” is not mainly an average of look, smell, etc.

And how would price fit into your scenario?

You don't suck, you were just looking at it from a certain angle, and there are various other angles to consider.

I noticed that “whole is greater” phrase at the end of another BA’s review from 3 years ago of a beer that I had and reviewed today, and I immediately thought of this thread—but oddly that reviewer didn’t really even score according to that logic, but rather did more of an average:
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.25
