All right! Sunday evening on New Beer Sunday - always a magical and blessed time of the day. Its a long weekend in Canada as we celebrate the history of Queen Victoria. "May Two Four" weekend as its been coined for years. Doesn't get more Canadian than that! With the craft beer boom it has left some classic lagers in the dust like an ex boyfriend asking at the cottage "What happened to us?"

Tonight before a good meat and potato's dinner I tuck into 17 North Pale Ale. It took some web research and some fine print reading on the side of the can to learn this is more than that. Its a Wheat Pale Ale that boasts that its not filtered.
I don't call this being off to a great start having to find out that its a completely different style of beer that it indicates on the front of the can. This brewery has been around for over 30 years - they closed about 10 years ago and lightly rebranded themselves. Most of the original crew is still on board its was just down to a darn money issue why they closed.

All right - Larry Cable Guy time ' Gittttter dunnnnnn

I gave the can a Weiss roll and poured it aggressively into a tall clear stein. The can began to release foam as soon as I cracked the tab. A large white with brown sugar sticky marshmallow head subsides to a 2 inch top base with a Canadian dollar coloured brew beneath. Pouring the rest of the guts of the can in after; an impressive Bavarian looking ale stands before me.

Immediate tropical fruit aromas under my piss tank honker nose. Mango, sliced banana in a bowl. Aroma from the poured can is pure pineapple juice from a tin. All aroma's are from hops and yeast - no malt character under the shnoze.

Taste is rather bitter from more brewing hop character coming through. Malt character is very faint. Its mostly hops with a very dry astringent finish. A very bitter beer - gives you a sensation of an ice cream headache.

This Wheat Pale ale coats your mouth with astringency. A very dry beer. Dry beers like this pair up great with chicken wings with regular cayenne hot sauce. The kinda S*it you'd put on everything..

At the end of the day - I think their marketing division needs a kick in jimmy to better advertise this beer. I'm all but the lone review on here for it - its a nice beer. Its hop character is so strong and so dry that it blows past the style guidelines. So if its a beer within itself? I'll just have to put one foot up on something to come up with a score. If your looking for a dry beer to have with some spicy food - I recommend it,

    Happy New Beer Sunday everyone!!!!

I wondered how much you would enjoy that one. I enjoy it as well, but I like almost everything from their lager series. It appears they have the Helles listed as a seasonal now, which gives me a month or two more to enjoy it. Cheers!

Always glad to see people enjoying some Port City. For some odd reason I always think that beer is a pale ale or an IPA and forget I actually gave it a good rating as an amber Czech lager. Might need to grab some on my next trip to the brewery or beer store.

    Pühaste - Waking Fantasy

Imperial Stout with tonka and cinnamon, from Estonia (12%).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, slightly caramelly malt, chocolate, tonka and cinnamon, with just a hint of licorice as well.

Taste is a great balance of roasted, caramel malt, dark chocolate, strong tonka, with notes of vanilla, woodruff and musty earth, lighter cinnamon and hints of licorice and leather. Finishes bittersweet, with a light sweetness and bitterness as well as some chocolate, tonka and cinnamon lingering in the aftertaste. Full, creamy mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.

Definitely one of the better stouts from my recent Pühaste haul. The tonka is quite strong with this one, but not overbearing, with the cinnamon standing out distincly as well. These are balanced nicely against a medium/strong roast and light/medium bitterness though, as well as chocolate, licore and leather also coming through, which makes for a good interplay of sweet, bitter and roasted notes with a rich tonka and cinnamon presence. Body and mouthfeel are exceptional here, quite rich and full, thick and creamy. I'm not sure if I would label this a Pastry Stout, but if it is, it's a rather well done one.

    Canned 3 10 24.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 3/4 inch white head over a hazy, light golden body with lacing.

Nose of tropical fruit and citrus.

Taste mirrors nose closely with orange and tropical fruit flavors present while having a slightly bitter citrus and pineapple finish.

Nice full mouthfeel, a bit soft with medium carbonation.

Overall, a quite tasty offering from a new-to-me brewery in the Finger Lakes region of NY State and worth picking up!

    Cheers!!

Final beer from Charleston, one that I had to make happen…

Somewhere around 16-17 years ago I visited my aunt and uncle in Charleston. I went to the Piggly Wiggly down the street searching for local beer and came across a brewery called Palmetto Brewing, I bought a six pack of their amber. I remember being blown away by how malty and yet hoppy it was. It always stood out as a beer memory to me. Well, all these years later I finally got to revisit.

My siblings and I took an Uber to the brewery the night before we flew out for a quick beer…the first beer they ever brewed way back in 1993 and still around.

Palmetto Brewing - Amber Ale (5.8%)

Deep dark amber, more brown hued than ruby; crystal clear, not much head, off white in color.

Rich malt on the nose; light toffee, some molasses, toastiness, hops are there but hard to describe; earthy with very light hints of pine.

Taste is rich malt, very pleasant toasted character, lightly caramelized, nice hoppy kick on the finish, sappy as it mixes nice with the malt leaves a prickly sensation; the aftertaste is quite nice balanced mix of malt and hops.

Body is medium, on lighter end though, the malt sweetness diminishes quickly dries out but does leave light residual malt sweetness, moderate and firm bitterness, this amber is more dry and bitter than sweet and malty, make no mistake though some rich malt presence there as well.

I can’t believe it but this beer tastes exactly as my memory says it did so many years ago. This one really blurs the line between a malty vs hoppy in an American amber. Cool they are still making it, I hope it continues to live on.

Have a lovely week everyone. See you soon.

Another week another new Jack's Abby beer. This time it is a part of their Summer Fest mixed pack and is Weizen Fest Wheat Lager.

The appearance is of bright orange murky liquid without any sediment after swirling the can. The head disappears quickly like a can of soda.

Nose is a strong(ish) yeast without anything else.

There is almost no taste like a can of flavored soda.

The mouthfeel is thin and unremarkable.

Overall it is a refreshing brew similar to their Blood Orange Wheat with the orange flavor removed, which is a good thing.

Last new beer for the weekend. Barrel Aged Life After Death Star from Equilibrium (and J. Wakefield). Barrel aged imperial stout with Mostra Ghost Bear espresso blend, Madagascar vanilla, raw coconut, marshmallow, and lactose. Comes in at 14% ABV.

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours a VERY thick black with a very thin layer of brown head. I mean very thin. The nose is vanilla, marshmallow, milk chocolate, coconut, lactose, light maple, and maybe a very slight hint of coffee. My guess is this is going to be fairly sweet, but let's see.

The taste is rather fantastic. Cinnamon, vanilla, coconut, chocolate, lactose, slight bourbon, light coffee, molasses, prunes, raisins, and a touch of blackberry. Really nice integration of flavors. Definitely a pastry stout - although not too sweet at all. Just a lot of adjunct notes.

The mouthfeel is unreal. Super thick and gooey. Aftertaste is vanilla and chocolate.

    4.4/5 rDev -1.3%

Just got home from our one-night trip to Ashford. Stopped on the way for a six mile hike to see some waterfalls along the Little Mashel River.

Russian River - RnD IPA #44, hopped with HBC-586, Luminosa, NZH-106, Riwaka, & Zumo

500ml bottle served in a curvy Monhegan pint glass. Bottled on 05.03.24. Bought it at Chuck's Hop Shop Seward Park two days ago.

Pours clear light brass with a big fluffy head, maybe two inches, which settles into a thick clumpy layer, sustained by quite a bit of visible active carbonation. Smell is dank and lemony, some melon rind, some floral sweetness.

Taste is surprisingly powerful honey and flower sweetness with not-quite-equally-powerful lemon rind and melon rind bitterness. However, further sipping allows the bitterness to build and the sweetness to just about take a back seat.

Mouthfeel is smooth, almost silky, with just a little carbonation liveliness. Overall, very nice IPA.

It totally was. It took me a couple of hours to finish it, and I was a wreck the next day. Whenever I send a blind beer, I put the ABV on it, and wouldn't send a super high ABV beer blind.

Whoever deleted my second post in this thread, which was a pic of beers I picked up yesterday at Dark Lord Day, it wasn't in the wrong thread - it was meant to go with the post I made with the new beer I enjoyed today, but due to the rules on this board, posts can only have two pics, and I thought it was appropriate to post that pic in my second post because I referenced Dark Lord Day in my first post and I thought it may be of interest to our NBS posters here (I've shipped Dark Lord to a number of posters in this recurring thread).

I guess I should've put that pic in my first post and deleted the pic of me and my buddy of 56 years. My bad.

Roughtail Brewing's The Swarm TIPA with Citra & Nelson Sauvin hops, 10% ABV; 4.16 overall

Pours a very hazed gold with a finger of tight eggshell colored head. average-ish head retention & lacing

S: Citrus, peaches & melons once warmed up, nose fades a bit down the stretch

T: Oranges, passion fruit, guava, a touch of coconut & green melon up front. Dryness, more passion fruit & guava, some sweet orange notes, & cantaloupe once this beer is warm. Finishes dry with cantaloupe, peaches & sweet oranges & just a kiss of pink grapefruit

MF: Medium body, minimal carbonation, good balance

Nice drinkability, another great hop bomb from these guys. Was headed for greatness, but the nose came up short

Thank you for sharing your pictures and experience with your friend of Dark Lord Day and the rest of your awesome weekend beers. Perhaps they can restore your post with the explanation, though I'm guessing this is your post folks can see the great beers you shared perhaps the Moderators can restore here after your explanation.

    Back Home Again in Indiana

Really enjoyed your review, and hope you enjoy your holiday tomorrow. Also hope a few more Canadians can find and review this beer after you sold it so well.

So cool you were able to revisit this beer and share your experience with us. Some beers seem magical in our memories, and then we finally crack one open after a long gap and it seems different. Glad this brought back the memories of what excited you, perhaps at the start of your craft journey.

    Cheers everyone!

    Reuben's - Double Crikey

16oz can served in a big snifter. Packaged 04/22/24. Bought it at Pint Defiance yesterday.

Pours clear burnished brass with a gigantic, fluffy head (on an extremely vigorous pour). Head slowly decomposes into big uneven pillowy piles. Smell is pine, biscuit, resin, and honeysuckle.

Taste doesn't exactly discard the biscuit and honeysuckle, but their asses are kicked by the resin and pine bitterness. Nice.

Mouthfeel is medium, with a bit of a fluffiness. Overall, this is a WC DIPA and I like it a lot.

Orthodox Farmhouse Brewery Fog Lift New England Style IPA, 5,4% ABV; 4.24 overall

Pours a hazy & somewhat carbonated honey color with a thumb of tight cream-colored head. Pretty good head retention & lacing

S: Melons, some breadyness, passion fruit & guava

T: Follows the nose, pretty dry, grassyness, passion fruit, white grapes, pears & dryness up front. Passion fruit, guava, green melon, dryness & tangerine as this beer warmed up. Finishes with a hint of pineapple, more passionfruit, a little dryness & tangerine

MF: Medium body, lively carbonation, nice balance

A very good take on the style from a brewery that slants Belgian. Actually, liked this better from the crowler

Great Afternoon out at the brewery catching up with old friends from our time being assigned in England. This Crowler is a great bonus that will make me go back again sooner to their awesome Bucolic location

Three Floyds - Barrel Aged Blot Out the Sun

12oz bottle served in a tulip. Bottle seems to have been dated 2022 - 13.8%. @ovaltine sent it to me in NBS BIF #18.

Pours black with very little head. Smell is roast coffee, burnt raisins, maybe anise, maybe molasses. Roasted nuts.

Taste is dark roast, light cherry syrup. Dark chocolate. Let's go back to the molasses. Maybe some vanilla,, definitely boozy, but not overwhelmingly so.

Mouthfeel is a little bit on the thin side -- for the style, at least, by no means thin in the overall realm of beer. Overall...it's not bad, it's definitely not stellar. It's a pretty good barrel aged stout.
