Welcome one and all to this four day style tasting event featuring Russian Imperial Stouts. We will hold this tasting through Monday, May 27 at 11:59 PM Pacific Daylight Time. So everyone has four days to bring their finest Russian Imperial Stouts to share and discuss. All beers listed in Beer Advocate as Russian Imperial Stouts (link) are eligible for this tasting. In addition, if you have a Russian Imperial Stout not currently in the database, you may present this beer as well (please also consider adding the beer).

Beer Advocates are encouraged to post pictures of their selections, and observations, brief or in detail. We also like to have conversations comparing and contrasting selections, discussing favorite selections and what you enjoy about the style and individual selections.

The event officially kicks off with Andy Dufresne's presentation of the National Anthem. as broadcast inside Shashank State Penitentiary.

My first selection is one of two I have from Illinois, this one a longtime favorite by a brewery in Lake Barrington. The hockey jersey is Vladislav Tretiak's CCCP Olympic Jersey, under which he held a 17-0-0 record. He is widely considered one of if not the greatest goaltender in the history of hockey, and also the best goaltending coach (NHL HOFers Martin Brodeur, Dominic Hasak and Eddie Belfour and many more).

    Brewery Notes
Suffice to say, beyond the loss of the hammer and sickle 2020 logo, not much has changed between the 2020 vintage and this release I picked up refrigerated in late Winter 2024. Slightly less head, warming gives this a nice smooth bourbon and oak aroma and flavor. Getting a nice coffee dark roast with sweet malt, get notes of maple syrup though none is added to this selection. Getting similar mouthfeel and I haven't been hit by a serious blow yet, though I'm only in round 3 of this planned epic 15 Round Championship bout.

I'll return if something drastically changes during the finishing of the remaining 10ish ounces, but suffice to say I really enjoy this selection and glad I came across this four pack out in Woodman's on a cold March morning.

Look forward to hearing from you as the night/day/weekend unfolds.

    Za zdorov’ye!

Good things come to those who wait?

Brooklyn has been brewing their Black Chocolate Stout since 1994 and to my mind 30 years of brewing makes this beer a classic.

Below is how this beer is detailed on BA:

“This is the famous Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. In the 18th century, Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia, ordered a stout to be sent to her from England. This beer was brewed strong and hoppy to survive the sea voyage, and it arrived in perfect condition. Soon "Russian Imperial Stout" became the toast of the Russian aristocracy. Brewed since 1994, our Black Chocolate Stout has itself become a modern classic, heralded the world over. It achieves its dark chocolate aroma and flavor through the artful blending of six malts and three distinct mashes. Properly kept, it will improve in the bottle for many years. This stout is the toast of the winter season in many countries, and there is nothing better to enjoy with chocolate desserts, cheesecake, ice cream, fine cheeses and roaring fireplaces.

Given this beer’s higher ABV and sturdy character, we think it’s a prime candidate for cellaring. Find a cool, dry spot away from light sources, and see how it changes in the years to come. You never quite know what will happen when you age a beer: perhaps the body will smooth out, notes of vanilla, oak, and tannins will come to the front, or hints of leather and soy sauce will make themselves known. No matter what, remember that beer is meant for drinking, so don’t keep it to yourself for too long.”

Will this beer still be ‘good’ after 10 years of cellaring? Well, let’s find out.

    Served in a tulip glass:

    Appearance

Dark mahogany colored approaching black with a thin khaki colored head.

    Aroma

Aromas of dark malts including chocolate, a hint of vanilla but also dried dark fruits (e.g., fig, raisons, dried plums) as well.

    Taste

The flavor follows the nose with chocolate and some dried dark fruit flavors (e.g., fig, raisons, dried plums). Low/moderate bitterness

    Mouthfeel

Medium bodied, a luscious mouthfeel with an off-dry finish.

    Overall

I think this beer is very good! I am very pleased how well this beer cellared for over 10 years.

I have 6 bottles of the Winter 2016 vintage (from a case purchase) still cellaring with plans to enjoy those beers over the next few years. I hope they mature as well as this bottle did.

    Cheers!

Do beers that present as RIS but are classified as American count? I’m away from my cellar and trying to make this work, but even though it mentions Peter the Great on the label (and why I bought it)
    It’s classified as American here.
Either way, the RIS style is one of my favorite styles so I *will* be back with one that there is no question on. Just need to pick up some Old Rasputin. Or something.

Here is a link to the brewery notes, with the Russian references also included in your bottle photo.

    https://store.pfriembeer.com/www-pf...barrel-imperial-st-p/bourbon_barrel_stout.htm

The brewery lists this as an Imperial Stout, with no designation. Untappd and RateBeer both use the Imperial Stout designation, without country (Russian vs. American) in their style options.

I tend to agree based on the brewery notes, if pFriem were to select a substyle of Imperial Stouts, they would likely select Russian due to their tribute to the Czar Peter The Great.

Before the tasting, I requested and moderators moved a few variants of Cafe Deth and Deth's Tar by Revolution Brewing from Russian Imperial Stout to the Oatmeal Stout based on the brewery's designation and use of oatmeal for the base. Perhaps @Todd or a Moderator can weigh in on whether this pFriem selection should also be considered for reclassification in light of the brewery's notes and homage to the Russian Imperial Stout history, and lack of American Imperial Stout attribution.

In either case, that is an impressive selection, and thank you for sharing.

Over thirteen thousand Beer Advocates have taken the time to post a rating among the 4,004 full reviews of Old Rasputin. Will be interesting if this will also be the most selected Russian Imperial Stout in our tasting this weekend.

Here is the leaderboard after our truncated kick off Thursday evening / early Friday morning to start the event: I likely won't list and link every beer consumed during the tasting, but will try to have a daily and final leaderboard of our top beer selections and also State / Country leaders after midnight Pacific Time to allow the world to weigh in.

(RIS Tasting Selections) Brewery / Beer (Brewery Location) (Beer Advocate Total # Ratings)

Six way tie for First Place (Ordered by total Beer Advocate Cumulative Ratings)
Russian Imperial Stouts were our top style, and North Coast Old Rasputin (90 Beers) was our top individual beer selection among the 519 Total Beers enjoyed during 2023 March Beer Madness last Spring by 49 Beer Advocates across the globe.

Still have one more local to feature this tasting, but that doesn't mean this selection does not have a Chicago connection. This is one of if not my absolutely favorite Russian Imperial Stout release each year. Firestone Walker led by Brewmaster Matt Brynildson, who learned his craft first at the Siebel Institute and then at Goose Island Brewery, rising to Goose Island Head Brewmaster between 1996-2000. Matt joined Firestone Walker in 2001 as their Head Brewmaster where he continues to this day.

    Firestone Walker Parabola (2024)

Store at 45 F, let warm to 55 F. Head subsides to a luxurious creamy pool over the pitch black base. Small carbonation bubbles working overtime, though gentle on the tongue. This is a rich, creamy decadent offering. Totally classy, like Cybil Sheppard on Moonlighting (or anything). The 2024 edition was aged in 12 year Elijah Craig barrels. Getting a very smooth bourbon barrel with this one. Everything in proper order, the barrel, oak, base. Some malt sweetness drawing me in, not getting much coffee notes, but digging the roast malt. Bourbon excellent. This is a special vintage, one I must get more even though my cellar is bursting at the seams.

I linked my OG review from my OG pour at Firestone Walker's Propagator location in Marina Del Ray. I will NEVER fly in or out of LAX without at least one stop to this great location. The buildout, bartenders, selections, typically great patrons. I really want to get to Paso Robles at some point, perhaps for their Annual Invitational, but really could spend a few days up there because they do such a great job over so many styles. Can enjoy many selections without repeating unless you want to.

Have more planned but might not return to drink until tomorrow, though I will continue to enjoy the posts and conversation.

Good day BAs! Off to a RIS start for the long (for yinz working stiffs) weekend while for us resting on our laurels it's just another few days of sleeping on the couch in front of the TV as we devolve into vegetables. Whatever.
I was going to do a side-by-side with Old Raspy but decided to just do a single since we have to go out for lunch.

Very nice. Not as bitter as Old Raspy but still a pleasing flavor with lots of roast and a little char.

Thanks to @ChicagoJ for setting up this thread and starting it. Let me be clear, there is no finer beer than Old Rasputin. That being said I thought I'd start with a pair of sessionable Russian Stouts, both being less than 10%ers, North Coasts Old Rasputin 4X12 $9, and a local, Two Brothers Northwind, 6X12 $10.

Look: Both beers were dark brown, khaki heads, Old Rasputin had a bigger head, and some lacing, otherwise the same.
    Rasputin by a hair.

Smell: Coffee, bitter chocolate, some toffee. Old Rasputin smelled hoppier?
    Rasputin by a nose.

Taste: once again, coffee, bitter chocolate/cocoa, toffee. Rasputin is a bit more bitter, Northwind is a little sweeter.
    Advantage Rasputin.

Feel: Both beers were "thinner" than most stouts, well carbonated.
    Call it a draw.

Overall: I have consumed OR for years, readily available 24/7/365, and is my beer, Northwind is a seasonal and rarely seen 40 miles from the brewery. I don't think I could have picked them apart. Northwind might be a hidden gem...I did buy another sixer of Northwind.

Has an ebony pour with 2" creamy, tan head, which lasts. Aroma is coffee, cocoa, roast malt. Tastes of coffee, tea, cocoa, roast malt, black malt, ash. Full body with a dry, astringent finish. When it Comes to Russian Imperial Stouts, you can't go wrong with "Old Raspy".

Revisited for the May 24th - 27th 2024 Russian Imperial Stout online tasting:

Near opaque dark brown body, appears black in the glass; initial thick, tan colored head, somewhat fizzy in character and dissipates in a few minutes to a fairly thin, percolating texture. Very nice aroma; a bit of zesty spiciness enlivening the rich, dark roast grain sweetness; milk chocolate and star anise. The taste reinforces the smell sensations with the addition of a bourbon-like booziness. Medium-heavy mouthfeel; smooth and velvet-like; very nice alcohol warmth cutting through the residual sugars.

I still like this Russian imperial stout. I thought the aroma was a bit nicer than the last time, the mouthfeel just a twinge lighter in feel, yet still an overall impressive beer.

    Ratings and scores: 4.0 4.0 4.25 4.25 4.0; BA weighted overall score: 4.13; rDev: -2.4%

    Pouring temperature: 41 °F; canning info: n/a
Source: local purchase (Coaltrain Fine Wine, Craft Beer & Spirits)

Still an inky, opaque color; an initial thick head that eventually fades to a light wisp of khaki colored foam. Nicely balanced aroma; dark, roasted malts; earthy sweetness; dark chocolate. Fantastic flavor compared to last year; balanced, rich and flavorful, sweet yet not cloying; very subdued whiskey presence; a very slight woody phenol taste. Heavy body; smooth and silky on the palate; semi-sweet with a very subtle alcohol warmth.

This is a different beer in many ways from last year. Based solely on my scores, I'd say more balanced, more mature in character. I'm liking this year's version much more.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Original January 18th, 2022 scores and ratings: 4.0 4.5 3.75 3.75 4.0; overall: 4.0; rDev: -5.9%

Tar black, opaque body topped with a thick, spongy, semi-creamy, light khaki colored head; respectable foam rings. Outstanding smell of dried figs and raisins; moderately roasted grain; dark chocolate. Great similarity between the taste and the smell; light milk chocolate flavor with a lightly spicy, moderately boozy set of aspects; bourbon; anise. Heavy body although a bit thin for the style; boozy heat mingling with a moderate residual sugar feel.

The bourbon barrel treatment really makes its presence felt with this beer. I may have to get a second can and let it age a bit, as the boozy qualities tend to overtake the rest of the beer. Still, at 11.5% ABV, some whiskey qualities are to be expected. It would be nice to have some canning data available. Otherwise, not bad for a high-octane stout.

Pouring temperature: 48 °F; canning data: unknown

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

...the can doesn't designate this as bourbon barrel aged, but it certainly has the taste of bourbon in it...I found other flavor variations of the beer online but found nothing denoting a purely unadorned (i.e., plain) version of the beer...

...I've contacted the brewery to see what light they can shed on this...

Thought Ii'd list 'em and see if, by 7 tonight (I'm very regimented, lol) what you all think should be the drinking order (no, not all in one night- maybe not in 3, lol). The list:
