Hi fellow BAers! I’m planning a road trip through NS, PEI, NB, and Newfoundland this summer. I’m curious to learn more about which breweries and possibly some restaurants that I need to make sure I include in the itinerary. Many thanks in advance! Looking forward to this trip as I’m just starting to plan it out.
You are talking about some pretty vast distances! I live out west, but I would say that 2 Crows brewing in Halifax is absolutely fantastic - you should have that on your list for sure!
Thank for the suggestion. I’ll definitely add them to my list! I’m planning for a 60 day trip so I’m hoping to cover a fair amount of area
I missed that you said ‘summer’ trip. Some of my maritime favourites: Big Spruce in Cape Breton makes good beer, and is a lovely spot. Their Ra Ra Rasputin (now Kobzar) barrel aged stouts are underrated. They seem to have several vintages always available. https://bigspruce.ca/ I’ve also enjoyed the beers from Tatamagouche. Wide range of styles too. https://tatabrew.com/collections/beer Stillwell is a classic beer bar in Halifax. Definitely worth a stop. https://www.barstillwell.com/ If you are an IPA guy, Trailway is, I believe still tops in the Maritimes. https://www.trailwaybrewing.com/ If you are a geographical ticker, and plan on also visiting Labrador, Iron Rock is the only brewery operating. https://ironrockbrewing.com/ @polloenfuego is an area expert and can really give you the best intel for your trip. Cheers.
I’m in St John today so I’ll be in Moncton in a few days and hope to find a few of them! Hopefully I’ll have time to take the longer route back and see Fredericton on the way back to the states
Thank you so much! I’m not sure I’ll make to Iron Rock on this trip but added it to my future trip list notes. I’m hoping to be able to get to the others you mentioned though. Thank you again!
Fredericton - Trailway. St. John - Gahan House, Big Tide and Piccaroons (try the pizza place next door) are all within walking distance. Moncton -Pumphouse, they do crowlers and growlers of all their draft, also try Tire Shack. On the way to Moncton stop at Cavok and Flying Boats... Also Holy Whale.
Cheers! I remember enjoying some of the beers I’ve had at Loyalist City in St. John. I had a good English IPA and Bitter there.
I’ll try to reach out to Pete (polloenfuego) outside of BA as well. He lives in NB and I know he knows the PEI scene pretty well too.
I made it to Gahan house and enjoyed it. Pumphouse has been available at a number of places but it’s always nice to visit the actual location. And I’m definitely looking forward to Cavok’s after just looking at their website! Great range of styles and looks like a cool vibe inside. Thank you again for the info!!!
You'll love Halifax... 2 Crows, Unfiltered, Garrison, Propeller, Boxing Rock, Tusket Fall, Boxing Rock. If they still do the historic brewery tour at Alexander Kieths is cool.
Hi folks, jumping in after some prodding. Places for beer in NB: Edmundston: Ateepic brewing - up and coming Grand Falls: Brasseurs du petit sault or Grand Falls Brewing - both make some nice beers Fredericton: Trailway is king, but for food try the Picaroons Roundhouse. The food is fantastic, but the Picaroons beer is forgettable. Also try Grimross, Half Cut and Greystone for beer. I find Half Cut's new batch of Mouth Breather WC IPA to be fantastic. Moncton: Tide and Boar for both beer and food. Both locations are great. Try their IPAs and they have an interesting sour series called Sour Otis. Also in Moncton, try Tire Shack, but it's in a dodgy part of town. Also around is O'Creek Brewing, and Holy Whale is across the river in Riverview. Prince Edward Island: Lone Oak is a must. It's just past the Confederation Bridge as you come into the Island. Their beers are spot on, Hollywood is a nice WC IPA, Yankee Gale is a nice hazy APA, and there are others. The food is absolutely delicious and the portions are big. Probably the best spot on the Island. Depending on how far you are willing to go on the Island, I recommend Copper Bottom and Bogside Brewing in Montague. Both make some nice beers, and Bogside shares a spot that serves some good eats. In Charlottetown I recommend a stop by the Hopyard. It's a funky little joint that plays good music (of all types) and serves local brewed beers from across the Island. They have a rotating menu for food, but the menu has never disappointed me. In Nova Scotia, I see many folks have commented on spots, the one I want to back up is Tatamagouche, or Tata Brewing. The town is a quaint little village and the brewery is a hopping joint. Great people, worth the visit. Try the Giantess barleywine. I haven't seen anyone mention Good Robot Brewing or Unfiltered Brewing in Halifax. Both make solid beers, and they are available to go. All the places I mentioned except Hopyard have beer to go.
Wow! That’s a ton of good information! I’ll add all of that to my list/map and will make an effort to get to as many as I can. This is way more than I was able to figure out/find doing my own research and is only adding to my excitement of getting to visit these places.I really do appreciate the sharing of your past experiences. Cheers! And if any of the people who gave me advice on this thread are ever in the Boston area give me a shout as I owe you a beer (or 3)
Hi All, Bumping this thread as I am headed to Halifax/Cape Breton soon. In Halifax, I have Unfiltered, Stillwell, Tusket Falls and Good Robot as the top spots. In Cape Breton, it looks like Big Spruce is the one. Let me know if I am missing anything! Thanks!
Great recommendations here! Tide & Boar in Moncton is also a good stop with great pizza as well. And I haven't been since they opened but O'Creek in the Moncton area may also be a worthwhile stop. Lone Oak in PEI is an easy first stop once you cross the bridge.
