Sly Fox — Goat Race Maibock

The last of Sly Fox lagers. There's not much to say about this beer. It looks like a Maibock — deepish brown, with a decent head.

    The nose is sweet malt.

The taste is bread, malt, sweet, and spice.

Overall it is the tastiest and the closest to the style beer.

This completes my learning about Sly Fox lagers. Thanks again to @jonphisher for the suggestion. If they become easily available, I will consider the last two (Bohemian Pilsner, and Maibock).

Glad you were able to try...Sorry that pils didn't seem to work out as well for you as it does for me, I love that beer, but it could be nostalgia party too. I have fond memories of drinking it from the can back in college.

I will have to take your suggestion and revisit green state lager next time I see some. You'll know when I do try it again :beers:

PS all...back to back weeks with 7+ pages, that is more than it has been as of late. Now if only @ovaltine would show up again, hope all is OK and you're just busy with work or travel.

    Yuengling — Hershey's Chocolate Porter

I stumbled upon this beer I wanted to try for quite some time. There isn't much to say about this "porter". It is a chocolate drink with beer added, or vice versa. It is drinkable, but not very interesting.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned 0 idea, Modestman fix that finally! Pours an attractive hazy yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.75

Aroma is pineapple, peach, Papaya, tangerine, and apricot. 4.25

Taste follows pineapple, peach, papaya, tangerine, and apricot. 4.5

Mouthfeel is above average, not sticky or dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 8.5% big flavor but easy going down. 4.5

Overall not sure of the stupid name that has been used a million times, but the beer is good now, in 2 months I would be pissed if I thought it was fresh. 4.25

I suspect the opposite — you must be a child to enjoy chocolate-tasting beer.

I got a chance to try that beer, and was so totally disappointed with it.

Jazz Juice Pale Ale from Aslan Brewing in Washington state
--plus the nice color combo of the iris.

A fine-grained foam on the hazy amber brew, but icky with swirling chunks in suspension. Decent aroma of citrus peel and leaf mold. Flavor is old orange with grapefruit pith. Overall this is rather harsh-- like an acidic NEIPA watered down. Hot citrus peel in the finish. Moderate bitterness. Grapefruit taste lingering. Time for something else. Dated 04/30/24, three weeks ago.

Thanks! I've gotten into iris recent years. Something colorful after the daffodils are long gone. Then the dahlias later on. I like stuff you can stick in the ground in the fall and see what happens next year.

Hey All, busy work weekend for me but at least there is a Karl Strauss location just a 10 minute walk from my hotel.
    Hazy By The Sea

On tap at Los Angeles location.
Slightly hazy. Head develops creamy foam it quickly tapers off. Only hen of the head, remaining a thin ring, low retention, and only the latest traces of lacing.
Nose has a gentle hint of peach and a creaminess that goes in the direction of lemon meets milk sugar.
Flavor definitely pops with more of the peach upfront followed by some grass and citrus zest.
Mouthfeel is a tad active, light in feel, and finishes with a mellow dry, almost citrus rind bitterness.
    Overall, pretty good. Refreshing

A rare third post for me here…Breakfast Juice, a 9% TIPA by Tree House Brewing Company, brewed with guava, peach and mango purée:

Canned 3/22/24. Barely hazy deep gold body with clarity under two fingers of fluffy white foam; very good cap retention; medium heavy lacing; solid ring. Nose is peach and tropical fruit. Taste follows with mango and orange in the mix; alcohol well hidden. Medium body; moderate minus carbonation; no astringency. Overall, it tastes like a semi sweet kid’s juice box; it’s juicy without being full or fluffy; good but not my favorite from Tree House.

Would I drink it again? Sure. Would I seek it out? No.

    Cheers y’all!

Congrats on healing completely. My wife still has a significant decline in smell nearly 9 months after COVID.

Here's another Karl Strauss brew. Love the name.
    Frank The Dank
On top of the Los Angeles location.
Light amber in hue. Short head starts to form and then surrenders. Lithest lacing imaginable.
Yes the nose is dank. Resiny at first with a hint of orange.
Flavor follows the nose pretty faithfully, only nodding in the direction of mellow weed.
Mouthfeel is nice and firm for style.

Perfect beer after a rather warm day outside.

    Founders KBS Spicy Chocolate.

Pours dark enough brown to call it black. Nice tan head that did not last, leaving no remnant in the glass. The liquid does coat the glass.

Smells of chocolate, char, coffee, a bit of bourbon and vanilla, very mild vegetal spicy pepper. The smell ramps up as the beer warms.

The taste essentially follows. Chocolate and spicy heat initially, then the barrel and coffee. Vegetal peppery spice comes back in the aftertaste. The coffee and chocolate are pretty much a mocha effect therez a hint of vanilla and a little bit of a toffee flavor. Very slight char.

Feel is a little greater than medium. Low carbonation. Itz fairly astringent.

Overall, a well made KBS variant I'm glad to have tried but I don't need to buy it again. Meets the brewers' intent. Im thinking 4.2 but its low on the "liking" for me and I'm kinda liking it less as it warms.

Back home from mother-in-law's laid-back birthday party, which (as usual) turned into a bottle (actually, I think all cans) share with the brothers-in-law.

    Fremont - Brew 8000

22oz bottle served in a curvy Fremont glass. This batch was brewed (well, probably bottled) on April 20th 2024. Bought it at the brewery a few weeks ago.

Pours syrupy thick, cola color, about a half centimeter layer of head struggles up a few seconds after the pour, a thick ring and a small thin island persist after the first few minutes. Smell is dates, vanilla, toffee. Maybe there's some cola aroma in there, too. Smell is pretty powerful.

Taste is very nice. Pretty much what I expect from the Brew x000 series. Massive dates and toffee sweetness, caramel and a hint of char around the edges. I do actually get a bit of heat from this one (I mean, it is 13.4%), usually that's even more dangerously well-hidden. I get a little bit of cola in here, too.

Mouthfeel is thick, sticky, not quite syrupy, with a very pleasant little tickle of carbonation. Overall, this is, as expected (and probably self-fulfilling to a certain extent), extremely good. The only gripe I have is how sweet it is; delicious in small servings, but a bit much if you're unevenly splitting a bomber with your wife. And this is a small gripe. I'll take my time.

Cheers to @LehighAce06 for this Human Robot Boohran Irish-Style Lager, 3.8% ABV; 3.54 overall

Pours an effervescent straw color with a thumb+ of eggshell colored head. Very nice head retention & lacing

S: Grassy & perfumy hops, some soapy notes

T: Light breadyness, grassy, hints of lime. Dryness, limes & grassyness as this beer warms up. Finishes dry & crisp, with grassy & lime notes

MF: Light body, crisp carbonation, okay balance

Kind of run of the mill, just not that interesting, drinkability suffers due to lack of flavor & body, not a big fan of the style

Well here was an interesting gem.
Karl Strauss 34th Anniversary BA Barleywine
And the barrel is Chardonnay! When I enjoy wine, it's usually red, pinot noir, cabs, etc. White wines don't really grab my interest. But this really worked.

On tap at the Los Angeles location.
Honey colored, slight white head develops about a half inch and then tapers off to a thin ring, slight lacing, light retention.
Nose has a a light, nimble delivery of honey, date, and a fleeting hi t of the barrel.
Flavor is where this lady really shines. There’s a light honey sweetness, along with the date, and maybe a hint of caramel, but the Chardonnay really adds a different dimension to this. And for somebody who’s not a big fan of white lines, this totally works.
Mouthfeel is a little light on the heft.
