My wife and a friend of hers are going on road trip in a few weeks that will take them through Vermont, New Hampshire and a little of Massachusetts. They are planning to hike, dine, and relax for much of it. Beer will not be tops on their agenda (my wife’s friend doesn’t like beer), but as part of the deal whereby I look after seven year old twins alone for a week while she is galavanting, they will stop at a few places to shop for me!

Their route for about a week or so will take them from Montreal to Stowe to Danville (a friend lives there) to Franconia to Newburyport to Middlebury and back to Montreal.

I haven’t been to Vermont in about 6 years. I am wondering if anyone might recommend a convenient spot or two that she might stop at to grab some beer to go for me, particularly from newer breweries I may not know about, but should try.

She will be going to Alchemist when staying in Stowe, and because her friend lives in Danville, I think I’ve convinced her to take the drive to Hill Farmstead for me. The only other spot I having been suggesting is Schilling.

Is there anything else along these routes that you might recommend? Any good restaurants as well?

    Cheers and thanks!

    Freak Folk Waterbury.
    Red Barn in Danville.
Maybe Red Clover in Brandon on return?
    All somewhat limited hours though...

River Roost in WRJ is right on the way from Newburyport to Middlebury.
    Worthy Burger in South Royalton.

    Thanks.

Red Barn is a short walk from her friends’ place so that will be a stop for sure. Red Clover is new to me and looks great, timing should work out too. I’ll push for Freak Folk as well if the days line up.

    Cheers!

Thanks! After a Quick Look at the menu, my wife added Worthy Burger to her plans immediately!

I like River Roost a lot. I’m trying to remember the name of the BBQ place across from there (Fatty’s?).

    Cheers!

Don't miss Schilling, easy to get to off of 93 in Littleton NH, a few miles north of Franconia Notch.

I’ve never been myself, but have loved the beer I’ve had from them. I’m picking hard for her to stop in and grab me some.

    Cheers!

A few years ago when I was up in that area, someone recommended Whirligig Brewing. I never went or had anything from them, but that's certainly right nearby too.

Whirligig and Red Barn are very close to one another (less than ten minutes). Kingdom Taproom is next door to Whirligig and has an excellent tap list for the area.

They will be driving into Newburyport, staying at a beachside resort for a night or two, and then back on the road to New Hampshire. No plans to go into Boston

Half an hour south of Newburyport is Salem, home of witches, puritans, and a quaint , historic New England tourist Mecca…they also have Notch brewing . If you like Schilling, then you’ll like Notch. Fun town, most people enjoy it

I love Notch. I had my first ever side-pull of an amber lager they brought to a festival in Toronto years back. I will add it to my suggestions to her. Cheers!

You should hit Silvaticus in Amesbury while you're up there. There's a few other breweries and a charming downtown there too.

Well, if the Treehouse zealots are going to have their say then I'll counter Navigation in Lowell/Chelmsford.
