I keep a ‘beer journal’ with tasting notes. My current digital one was started in 2013.

I lurked BA during that time (don’t do social media), and joined this fine Community in 2020.

I’ve done BA ratings only for beers ‘currently in hand’. But looking back at my notes, I think ‘holy shite that beer should be in the data base!’

So.,. not caring about ‘karma points’, do I add beers I drank (drunk.,.) years ago with accurate tasting notes, or is that not good form?

    Help me out BA.,.

People add older notes/ratings to the site all the time. Especially people coming over from RateBeer or Untappd. I just recommend adding the original date and maybe even "From old notes..." or something along those lines.

I joined up Jan 2021 and had 5 notebooks and lots of scrappy notes on bits of paper, register receipts, old envelopes. In some of my reviews I've entered "From scrappy notes in 1989" or something to that order. Also, i'm really having a blast locating some of the beers from long ago and giving them a current up to date review. Cheers!

Old Geek Notes ? That's a barleywine, right? Who brews it again?

(Sorry to go a bit OT, but some brewery should use that name...)

I typically add a batch of reviews a few times a year from my notes, as opposed to “real-time” reviews. This thread is reminding me to get on the ball again and start catching up!

Occasionally, I come across some old notes for beers that I sampled 10-20 years ago. When I do, I add those reviews and note that they are from old notes. I try to approximate dates as well as I can.

If you've got the time to type out a review, go ahead. However, if you're going to say pretty much what the last review(s) say(s), then why bother? Just give it a rating. No one will know, or cares, that it's from 10 years ago. (Are karma points given for a review vs. a rating?)

I'll note here that I'm not one to read reviews anyway, but I do look at the ratings.

I write reviews for myself, mainly. For some sparsely rated/reviewed items the reviews might be helpful to others, especially if the style isn't clear from the brewer's description. I don't pay much attention to ratings (except my own!)

BA guidelines frown on writing a review from memory, but as Todd pointed out, going from your notes is totally different and totally fine.

Think of it this way. BA is a site with two different functions: social media (thread engagement, WBAYDN?, etc.), and database. It would be improper to hop on WBAYDN? and share your thoughts on a beer from 10 years ago as if you were drinking it right now (much like how, on Untappd, you wouldn't "check in" to a location you aren't actually at, because what's the point?), but it's entirely proper to ensure our database is as up-to-date and comprehensive as possible.

While that makes sense, I will slightly disagree, as many users here take the opposite approach: they don't pay much attention to ratings, but they read the reviews. Further, if you clarify that a review is from a while ago, that might help trend whether or not a beer has changed over time (which gives context to the ratings). It wouldn't help you, necessarily, but it may well help someone else.

The ratings, in some ways, can be less reliable than the reviews. "Utterly mediocre. They can do so much better. Drain poured halfway through. 4.0 / 4.0 / 4.0 / 4.0 / 4.0." And that's not an exaggeration; it may even accidentally be an actual quite.

As for the karma question, you can see your points breakdown - and from there, you can see that karma is awarded for both ratings and full reviews. So if you only do ratings, you'll get karma, but if you do full reviews, you'll get karma for that. So no one is forced to write a review just to "farm" karma, so to speak; if they provide ratings, they're still helping to contribute to the site.
