It’s more people are tired of politics and political messaging on products. Some marketers recognize this and are holding back and some just capitalized on the hot buzzwords at the time (for example do black lives no longer matter or have we just stopped marketing that buzzword on everything). The new hot activism is the Palestinian-Israel issue and that is such a polarized, no win, moral morass that no marketer or product would touch it.

This is as good a thread as any to post this timely commentary on this topic, for those who have the patience for a 14-minute video. It gets going on corporate activism at about 0:48. Personally I think it hits the nail on the head.

Great video and I agree. The only thing that surprises me I guess, is that anyone really needs a video like this to understand what corporate America is all about.

    Profits. Period.

As Michael Jordan once put it regarding not getting political..(parphrasing) "Both Republicans and Democrats buy shoes."

    Touché.

    I am well aware this:

… is often posted by « certain sources » and not necessarily the most tolerant ones and it’s not an endorsement of it from me… but I get the sense, while disapproving the message they try to convey into it.

I like what the writer calls "The Corporate Pride Avatar Swap." Once could replace the work pride for anything these days. Whatever will get them more money.

I prefer my beer and breweries or whatever product it could be to stay out of the world of politics and such.
Can businesses not stay neutral and survive?

I’m one of those who’s disliked the corporate sanitation of pride (originally a celebration of a Black trans uprising against homophobic cops) — but Infante is right to call out this cowardice.

They’re in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. If it’s rainbow capitalism, or corporations actively contributing to harm, I’ll take rainbow capitalism 100% of the time.

Is there some cowardice in doing neither? Yeah. However, pride for me has always been about being my authentic self. I support corpos being their authentic, greedy selves, living their best money grubbing lives.

This reminds me of when Hillary Clinton and Obama acted like they were opposed to gay marriage until public opinion turned in favor of gay marriage. When people are selling something, whether it’s products or politics, it’s not about what they believe, it’s about telling people what they want to hear.

The problem is, it’s not always clear what the majority of people do want to hear.

Of course Pride wouldn’t be considered political if it weren’t for some trying to pass policies banning books about queer people, making it okay to fire people for being queer, trying to void queer people’s marriages, trying to take away queer people’s kids. Like how St Patrick’s Day stopped being all that political when the majority accepted Irish Americans as an established part of society that isn’t going anywhere.

Couldn’t agree more though that most corporations are making their decisions about whose rights to support and whose heritage to recognize based on what they think will make them the most money.

The stonewall riots, which inspired the first pride parades, were hardly a matter of just a "black trans uprising". The raid that sparked it was part of a long series of raids on queer friendly hangouts in NYC and the people involved were pretty diverse in their ethnic background and their particular sexual identity.

Early pride celebrations were generally criticized for marginalizing transgender and non white people.

Pride was always about a sort of mass public "coming out", its myopic in a poignantly current way to ascribe the whole thing to "black trans" identity politics.

June is also Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, given that the alcohol industry generally preys on and often damages Men's Mental Health, maybe they should put some of their pandering dollars there if they're gonna skip the pride spend
