Nah, never. Back in the day when we hanged out with peers we’d order a round and each of us paid for all, but to buy the whole place and patrons drinks is pushing it a bit. Don’t play rich man when you can’t afford it, speaking for me.

Now that I’ve read the article the OP posted, and had a few days with this thread, I’m wondering how many folks here will draw from the inspiration and buy a round for the bar at some point?

It would be fun to do this before I die just like in the movies. But am I wrong, the traditional way they do this is with strong liquor...

I've never done it, but thought about it. Reading the posts above, it seems the main deterrent is the cost, which has always been true. I wonder if a more recent concern is being the person that pushes someone past sober when they may have been sobering up to drive. I suppose that's throwing a wet blanket on the idea, but that's where my mind goes.

Not that I can remember, and I definitely wouldn't do so now. I don't like the idea of buying rounds; if someone buys me a round, then I feel obligated to have to buy a round in return.

I like being in control of my own destiny, if i want another drink I'll just buy it, whereas if somebody buys me a round, I may not have wanted another drink but will feel somewhat obliged to drink it so as not to be rude (although that doesn't mean I'll drink it). Usually though, someone will say I'll get the next round and I just say I'm good. I have no qualms letting it be known that I'm not going to be buying rounds when someone suggests it.

The way it worked, all selected threw in. The whole base knew. It was supposed to be equivalent to your monthly salary raise. Was a way to prop up the Base Club, which needed all.the help.it could get.

I have not, although I've been tempted. Then I do a head count . I don't think I've ever been part of a round for the bar either.

The bartenders wouldn’t let me order a round if I tried. I’d put too many stipulations on it. “I’d like to buy a round for the bar. ..but they can’t order those $15 craft cocktails…or a $10+ BA Stout….has to be well drinks or beer…and maybe not craft beer can we have them stick to macros? No wine either. Couldn’t we maybe just do a few pitchers of Bud and pass those around the bar? I’ll have an ipa from a local craft brewery though…”

...I don't know about that...maybe...I always figured it was whatever the person was drinking: a beer, a shot, whatever...

I lived in Salt Lake City in the 80s. Archaic laws meant ‘bars’ were ‘private clubs’, where drinkers had to purchase a membership.,. The only exception was the American Legion Hall, which, lucky for me, had a chapter close by. A member there would ‘sponsor’ me as a guest, in exchange for a drink of his choice. So., after several visits, I realized when I walked in, all the vets in the place would look over.,. and I kinda had to choose my sponsor for that evening’s access. Common sense (and ‘face value’) saw me buy a round for all, many times.
What was cool was on those occasions, the Vets reciprocated., and I’d have 8 or 10 Black Russians lined up on my spot near the pool table.,.

I have not, mostly because my wife would either kill me or divorce me! Although, there’s a lyric in this song that comes to mind. Surely Mick Jagger can afford it!:sunglasses:

I was best man in my buddy’s wedding, and they also happened to be getting married on my birthday.

After the reception, we went to the Genoa Bar & Saloon for the after party. Bought a round of Jack Daniels for everyone. Pretty neat place, it’s the oldest bar in Nevada and has been operating since 1853 (before Nevada was even a State).

Like a few others have mentioned, I was involved with "shouts", that's taking turns buying a round for our group. Not the whole flamin bar!

Just last year in November/December in Kyoto at Stand Umineko Koto (Craft Beer Stand) my wife who doesn’t drink beer decided to have a pint of Japanese craft ipa. She enjoyed the beer so much she wanted another pour. After the 2nd pour she said for me to buy a round for everyone there. This is well after opening 4 cans I brought from my local breweries (Green Cheek, RiiP, Monkish, etc) to share. Everyone was excited to taste these hoppy IPA’s west coast and hazy’s. As the wife & I were getting ready to leave she told me to buy them another round. So I did with hesitation. We walked out of this really awesome craft pub $300 less our pockets. But the group inside was really cool and fun. Met an American who was living in Sapporo for the last 10 years as a teacher. Another Japanese older guy who didn’t speak much English who was having a blast. He was very funny and entertaining. We went back the next night, but didn’t pull out our wallets for another round. One of many highlights during our trip to Kyoto.

I have only once. It was sometime in 2001 while visiting a friend in Ada Ohio.

Some college bar whose name escapes me. There were probably 20-30 people there, but it was $.10 draft night so it didn’t hurt the wallet much!

Yes I have. Here and also in Ireland. Multiple times and in Ireland and one of them is remarkable as the $ included 4 other people. In short, we were there for 25 days on a music tour and we all had shitloads of coins. Tons of little ones...or so we thought. That particular night we all had our personal belongings close to us, tossed our loose change into pint glasses, and sailed into that little pub that had the most beautiful local folk you could see. They knew us all by name and greeted us with smiles, hugs, and laughter. We bought the bar a round of whatever they wanted (I had Murphy's and a shot of Jameson) and the barkeep got whatever was left. I think we had about 120 Irish Puntz. It was in the 1990s. :beers::beers:

When I started drinking (late 60s), an 11 oz draft of "western beer" was regularly 25c. A nearby Shakey's Pizza had a weekday evening special of 30c Oregon pitchers (a little more than a quart). College tuition was $125 a quarter, our four person house rental for a month was $65. . . . Back then I wouldn't have thought to do it, but I could afford it now if the occasion called for it.
