I did it a couple of time’s on an expense account, but the place was filled with associates.

My ex-wife did it several times when I was traveling. Her passive aggressive side would get the best of her.

Wow. Dimers in 2001? We thought they were a bargain 30 years earlier.

Well from what I remember it was only one night a week, the cups were probably only 6 OZ’s and it was Natural Light. Still a bargain though!

I once bought a round of burgers for everyone at a Wendy’s in Niagara Falls. That was late night after many hours in a bar, so I think that counts.

The times I've been involved (either giving or receiving) you buy another of what they're already having. Nobody gets to go from Coors Light to Johnnie Walker Blue.

Did it once when there was only 3 of us at the bar. The favor was returned, it was fun! Couldn't afford to do it with more people there LOL

Why no, I have not. I always liked the idea but I guess the right situation hasn't presented itself.

Funny you mention the private clubs...I live in The Heights neighborhood in Houston. This is an historic neighborhood that is the only one that has its own seat on the city counsel. When I moved here it was a "dry neighborhood" which I didn't know specific neighborhoods could be. It goes back to when The Heights was its own town, not part of Houston in the 1890's. By the time I moved into the neighborhood, there were lots of "private clubs" you just paid a small extra fee and got a membership card to show ever other time you came by. The counsel kept the dry status on the books till about 2016 or 17? The only neighborhood in town that a TABC office was in, cause their job was to just go to the "clubs" and make sure they were following the rules.

Other rules were, they had to order from a specific distributor that was way more expensive of course. Also establishments had to pay special taxes or something (not exactly sure on how all that worked). It was a mess, but since that was repealed in about 2017, its the area all the new places open ha.

Waay back in the early 70's. Local college/dive bar. Me and my friends lived there, especially a few years after graduating. Beers were $.15, maybe a quarter.
Even at that price it didn't happen. But I did buy a round of potato chips for the bar. Remember there being a bit of a crowd but it still couldn't have been more than a few bucks (but minimum wage was like $1.20 an hour, so it was something).

Semi- related, was in a restaurant last month, pretty upscale fish place. There was a menu item:
"Buy a round for the kitchen staff". Thought was kinda...weird. I spent a lot of years working the table trades, and some places would stand you to a drink at the end of your shift. But asking for the customers to treat the staff? Kinda shady, methinks.

In most normal bars with normal prices this does not happen often. In Wisconsin neighborhood bars during ball games, it's a thing and could happen.

I have more then once. Done it for friends or acquaintances. Done it to a bar full of strangers. But most of the time no one appreciates it but every once in awhile someone buys you a beer remembering it.

I've seen people buy rounds for the bargain everybody switches to crown Royal and quit drinking that cheap beer. If someone buys a around for the bar I stick to what I'm drinking. I also try to remember the returning favor.

Here lately when I go out sometimes everything's been paid for by some stranger.

You missed the chance to say it was fishy!

But—why shady? I’ve seen this all over the place, including quite a few breweries (where I would assume a shifty is on the house already).

I too have seen this 'buy the kitchen a round' or 'tip the kitchen staff' on a menu, both at breweries that I frequent (or used to frequent in the case of Arcadia), and I've responded a few times. Territorial is the other brewery but I don't think is on the menu any longer.

Go ahead and be a fan of your favorite NFL team and let me know about it at the bar I hang out in ("regular") I pay close attention to what team you follow, and your relative passion. We all do. If I don't know, I'm going to inquire. On gameday, I have cheeseheads in the trunk of my car. If you are not a regular, but you are wearing your teams' jersey, etc., and If your team is getting your butt kicked by the Packers, you will be getting a round of whatever you are drinking, perched on top of a complimentary cheesehead. It is especially enjoyable when there was pre-game smack. I like to gift them when said fan goes to the restroom, so you can belly back up to the bar with that little surprise. The whole bar knows it's coming...again, regulars. I also have minature cheeseheads when I have a high volume situations e.g. Cowboys playoff game last year...
Absolutely one of my favorite ways to waste some money.

Opposing team regulars get a round also, just no cheesehead, those things are kinda pricey, lol- You think I'm crazy? lol

Oh, also, the cheesehead usually gets passed around, as a bit of conversation piece for those that never saw a "live" one...

    GPG!

I've never done it and only seen it happen once.

On a rainy Saturday afternoon in the 90s, when I was living in Ohio, a friend and I randomly stopped in a dive bar called the Friendly Tavern in a working class part of town.

Quiet place, the Sean Penn movie Bad Boys on the TV, maybe 20 people in there, everyone keeping to themselves.

One old guy calls the bartender over and makes a circular motion with his arm, kind of like an umpire signaling a home run, then the bartender goes around the bar taking people's orders.

It took us a minute to realize what was going on, as it was much more low-key than in the movies, but the guy had bought a round for the bar.

My friend and I said a thank-you in the guy's direction, he just nodded his head and didn't look up.

    A Friendly Tavern indeed.

The Beach Boys walk into a bar…

    “Round?”

    “Round. Get a round.”

    “I’ll get a round.”

    * Stolen from the tubes.

The 'round' that you've rounded up is squarely not around the 'round' of which we roundly speak.:stuck_out_tongue:
