Sadly, the last day for this brewery in Forked River, NJ, is June 29th. While I found the beer to be inconsistent, Backwards Flag was a nice place to stop for a pour on the way to or from the shore. The brewery is owned by a woman army veteran and they gave discounts to active duty, vets, and first responders.

I was dismayed to see that some of the posters on r/njbeer actually seem happy that it's closing because in their view it catered to a certain "demographic." I saw similar comments when COHO was sold. While everyone is entitled to their opinion and no one has to patronize a brewery if they think its vibe is "political," it's a shame when any small business closes. I wish Torie and the staff at Backwards Flag all the best in the future. And I thank her for her service to our country.

Anything perceived as right wing will be buried by leftwing types

edit: I took a look... while the term "certain demographic" might be coded language they did go on the military motif very hard as shown by their website. That is often not going to be a lot of people's aesthetic, you will lose business as a result. So it goes. There are other aesthetics I won't visit. I didn't get the view that it was pejorative.

There are a couple of loons in there. Welcome to reddit.

Backward Flag had next to no social media presence, had hours that seemed relatively limited, their location isn't the best, and they seemed to cater to the taproom only crowd/barely seemed to have cans out in the wild. I had only a couple of their beers and they were decent, but all those things combined will make it hard for a brewery to succeed.
