sharing a 3080 barleywine from Greater Good Brewing in Worcester, MA tonight. This12% ABV brew was purchased at the brewery. Cross posted in the What New England Beer are you drinking thread

    onto my review:

Sampling a 16 oz can picked up at the brewery and date stamped 11/9/2023. Drinking at just below room temperature and pouring into my snifter. the beer pours a rich clear copper color with several lazy streams of carbonation rising to the surface. A dense creamy off white head of about 1 cm foams up on the pour, but this is only a thin edge layer soon after the pour.
Aroma is hints of toffee and then a healthy dose of rindy grapefruit and pine sap. this is definitely a hop forward aroma. I dont really get much booziness or fusol notes on the nose.
The first sip of the beer reveals a medium body and very fine tingly carbonation. Texture is pretty smooth and not a very sticky barleywine is in my glass. I dont get really any coating on my palate and the beer drinks pretty easy.
Flavor is matching what the nose advertised to me. I get briefly some caramel and toffee and then a big hit of rindy grapefruit and pine sap bitter hops. Slightly astringent and definitely dries out my palate. Feels like olde school American barleywine here. Bitterness lingers after each sip, but I still dont get any booze or warming, so the beer drinks fast and easy.
You want a hop forward barleywine, this one is for you.

Found a few bottles at my local spot. The color is almost sable and the carbonation seems to have diminished a bit. The flavor still has what I can only describe as harshness, but it's also not as prominent. More of the malt sweetness comes through, almost like sugar cookies.

The shop had 2 more. Maybe I'll grab them this weekend.

Going with a wheatwine from Kiitos Brewing in Salt Lake City. A bit lighter than one might expect for a wheatwine, but no barrel aging here. 8% ABV. Brewed using hard red winter wheat that was grown along the Wasatch Front and at Solstice Malt in Salt Lake City.

Poured from a can at just warmer than fridge temp. Pours a golden yellow with an inch of white head. The nose is really interested. Candied sugar, malts, toffee, apricots, and a bit of maple.

The taste is super smooth. Honey, malts, bread, toffee, light note of leather, grass, lemon, and apricot.

Very smooth and refreshing. Definitely would buy again. Perfect wheat wine for summer.

Still plenty of caramel but the burned, bitter edge to it has subsided somewhat but still lingers at the finish. Kind of an over roasted coconut vibe but in a good way. More brown sugar and a hint of vanilla now, still plenty of the sweetest of brown liquors. This could go for years yet I think.

Auld Lang Syne from Burns Family Artisan Ales in Colorado. This is a brandy barrel-aged English barleywine. 16.1% and bottled in 2021. Says that it ages gracefully for 25+ years.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours dark brown with a good amount of tan head. The nose is full of dark fruit. The brandy barrels did a number on this one. Fantastic. Plums, brandy, pear, toffee, and gummy bears.

The taste is great. Tons of fruit, brandy barrel, toffee, slight brown sugar, and booze. Fruit includes pear, blackberry, raspberry, and grapes. Super intense. Getting some vanilla, and a slight bitterness (maybe from the wood).

The aftertaste is sweet fruit and a bit of alcohol heat. This lingers for quite a while. The feel is rather thin.

Love Lost at Sea from Buoy Beer Company. This is an American barleywine aged in Freeland Spirits bourbon barrels for 10 months. Comes in at 13.5% ABV. Had it on tap at Belmont Station, but this is my first time trying it from a bottle. I think I like it a bit more from the bottle, but it has also been aged for a for a year, so that might be it.

The nose is lovely. Tons of toffee, wheat, with a slight hoppy note. The taste is really nice. Toffee, figs, grapes, brown sugar, and malts for days. Slight bitterness. The bourbon is really nice on this one.

2020 Old Foghorn from Anchor. What a great beer. Toffee, citrus peel, spice, marmalade, honey, and woody bitterness. Lovely.

Gnosis BA Hermitage English Barleywine (aged 16 months in 14 year bourbon barrels). Released for their 2nd anniversary. They usually release this beer with different adjuncts (not barrel aged) and it just gets too sweet for me, but throwing this in a barrel without adjuncts does wonders. The sweetness is tempered by the barrel nicely. Huge caramel, creme brûlée, marshmallow, raisin, prune, bread pudding, nuttiness, some sherry, bourbon spirit, charred oak, and vanillin. Surprisingly great. Gnosis never disappoints.

2021 Mother of all Storms from Pelican. My barleywine cellar clearing continues. Some gems in there! This one has aged beautifully. Still has that Werther's vibe to it.

2013 barley wine from Alaskan. Back in 2013, when I bought this bottle, it was easily up there with Old Guardian, Old Ruffian, and Bigfoot. I have no idea when they last brewed this, but it hasn't appeared on shelves here in the last 10 years. I'm sure they stopped brewing it quite a while ago. Tasting really nice now. Much of the hop bite has faded. Rich toffee, bread, biscuits, wet blanket, and some stone fruit. I'm loving it.

Põhjala cellar series - triple barrel barleywine.

Outside the camper, too tired to bother with a fire tonight. This thing is some decadent-ass barleywine dessert which is a-ok with me right now.

Really want to get ahold of this at some point. When I was on Tavour I missed it the one time it was on my feed. Same with the Old Foghorn. I’ve seen Anchor stuff, but never that specific beer.
What are the odds we can get a picture of your cellar? Thoroughly jealous over here!

Haha - I'll try to take a coupe of pics soon. I'll be up in Portland next month and might be able to track down a bottle of MoaS for you.

I return to the Barleywine thread with some local goodness. Woodlot from Watson Farmhouse. Barrel aged barleywine. I’ve bought about 5 bottles of this and stumbled upon some 4-packs of 12oz cans. Maybe it’s in my head, but the can seems to have a much thinner body. Still good, though
