Ugh. Praying for the people of VT w/the latest round of flooding last night. Haven’t seen anything on Montpelier yet.
Montpelier stayed dry, but just barely (another 6 inches...). There are probably a lot of wet basements though. Barre got slammed again. Waterbury flooded but not as badly as last year. Water receded pretty fast. We were only stranded on the other side of the river for 4 hours instead of 2 days. It came down fast and our mountain roads took a huge beating, worse than last summer. Lyndonville, St. J and Plainfield really got pounded. We had an emergency selectboard meeting today and it looks like our little town with no tax base to speak of will be on the hook for about $1.5 million. We will have to borrow money and hope FEMA comes through later.
Partly warming of the oceans; that makes storms wetter. But VT has always had flooding problems. They are becoming more frequent because of more rain and more people to suffer the effects. Terrain contributes a lot. The super heavy rain on the mountaintops comes flying down the hills and fills the valleys. Finally, a lot of major storm tracks converge over northern New England. A "perfect storm", if you will.
