    Hello Mid Atlantic folks!!

Im going to travel to Geneva, NY in 2 weeks for work event and will be staying on Hobart and William Smith College campus for the week.

Im driving from Connecticut and travelling to New Hampshire after the end of the week.
Wont have a ton of time during the days, but some evening time to explore local beer scene.

Im not into hazies or sours.
Love a good kolsch and imperial stout.

Where should I definitely hit in Geneva and around a 30 min radius?

    Especially looking for to-go availability

Spots to fuel up on way into town from Connecticut?

Hope to get some good tips here.
    Im lookin at @IGaveYouPower , @SLeffler27 , and @Xerlic especially.

The obvious ones, not necessarily for the styles you mentioned, are,,,

    Big aLICe https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/61016/
    - nice spot good all round beers

    Lake Drum https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/40615/
    - fun space - beatnik vibe in the village ok beers and other brews

    Ardennes https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/60294/
    - Beutifull place - decent beer

    War Horse https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/17140/
    - These are the Stouts you are looking for

    Grow https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/63303/
    - same location as War Horse, very good beers

And definitely find time for lunch/dinner at Beef & Brew.

Farther a field, aside from War Horse, your best bets are…

    Othet Half https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/54750/?view=ratings
    - DEFINITELY worth the stretch at about 30min drive
    - They recently opened a tap room in Canandaigua (closer to Geneva) https://www.democratandchronicle.co...aproom-on-canandaigua-lake-in-ny/74167181007/. I have yet to visit.

    Frequentem https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/60004/
    - not quite a stretch and definitely worthwhile

For dinner, if you enjoy German cuisine, and next to Frequentem.

    Rheinblick https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/23375/

    Enjoy!

    EDIT ** and for a classy dinner… Dano's Heuriger https://www.danosonseneca.com/
    - it’s not really a beer destination, but the food and location make up for that.

I’m giving a huge recommendation for Micro Climate in Geneva. It’s a really nice, niche bar that has a very small but extremely well curated selection. They make the drive to get stuff you can’t find in CNY, and their most recently posted menu included Schilling, Suarez and Hill Farmstead.

If you’re feeling like a drive, one place not mentioned is Laurentide in Penn Yan. While you’re headed out that way, maybe stop by Spotted Duck for the most awesome ice cream experience in the Finger Lakes.

I actually live pretty far away from the Finger Lakes, but I did go there last year and made a thread here and got a lot of good recommendations. I also did a trip report at the end if interested. Unfortunately, I never made it to Geneva so can't give any recommendations for there.

The best beer that I had of my entire trip was at Frequentum (as recommended above) so if you make it to Canandaigua I highly recommend checking them out. They lean a lot into NEIPA and fruited sours, but they had some lagers on draft when I was there. I remember really liking their schwarzbier. My son also got a sticker from them that says "Respect the lager" so I imagine they do like working with those styles of beer. Young Lion was also great, but they ironically sold their spot to Other Half haha.

You might also want to make sure @Rocktire sees this thread since he lives in the area as well. ColdOne does too, but he already saw the thread.

I think @SLeffler27 and @ColdOne have it covered. So much so, that I now must get over to Geneva and check out Micro Climate; lol. Have not been on Linden st in quite a while. Cheers!

Hopefully there’s that same guy there who was serving us last time. Dude man mixed together fancy pants popcorn and cocktails with a very engaging intensity.

As a Genevan, I have to rep The Linden Social Club. It's not beer-specific by any means, but is a great place to grab a drink and a bite. They have a small tap list, but make an solid effort make it a combination of locals and imports. Additionally, the State Tourism Welcome Center is an outstanding place to grab a beer and people watch at the lakefront.

Unfortunately, Grow is no longer in a shared space with War Horse. You can still find their beers around here, but they have a grand opening of their own taproom in New Hartford (near Utica); about 90 minutes away from Geneva.

Frequentum has one of the best lager programs in New York, it's insane. They've got 3-4 side pulls which should tell you everything you need to know.

The OH location on the lake is kinda underwhelming at the moment because they have like half of the taps of the Bloomfield spot and are using the upstairs event space as the bar right now while they work on what will be the main bar downstairs. It's 100% worth the extra 10-minute drive to just go to the Bloomfield location at the moment.

Laurentide in Penn Yan is 100% worth a stop too, super cool spot, really enjoyable beers. A kolsch, actually, was a standout I remember having a few years back. Upstate Brewing also has a taproom walking distance from Laurentide and they're one of the most underrated breweries in NY, though I haven't been to this taproom yet.

Relative Risk, just south of where you're staying, is a real cool spot. Tons of open space, different things going on (craft fair last time I was there, big playground for kids, stage for live music) and the beers are very solid.

As far as spots to fuel up, I for sure got you, but give me an idea of where you might be doing so so I can narrow the field. LOT of shit going on on the 90 corridor between CT and Geneva.

Unfortunate for us, and good to know regardless. I was aware of the new place in Utica but didn’t know they have left War Horse altogether.

Im going to map my travel route soon and can check in with you.
But early planning might try I84 to route 17 and I86 and through Binghamton.
    But havent finalized yet.

Going to leave Geneva and drive to New Hampshire at end of trip too. Figure that is I90 east and then up into VT.

Speaking of Other Half in Canandaigua, was in there yesterday. They now have 14 beers on tap upstairs, and was told they are shooting to have the downstairs open by next weekend. We shall see.

The route through Ithaca (rts. 79 and 89) is scenic throughout, and estimated times are similar to interstates 81 and 90. Right off the highway is Taugahannock Falls; very nice. Or a little farther west, Watkins Glen, with the cave-like Rainbow Falls walk.

The falls are about 1/4 - 1/2 mile off RT. 89 and literally right off the parking lot next to the road. Super easy to make a stop-n-go visit.

Yeah they put them in last year but I don’t remember when. I don’t think they were there for my wedding weekend (April) but were for sure there by my final trip of the year (late August).

So, ive been researching more and loving all the tips and pointers here. Thank you. I am definitely going to go up route 17 and looking at stopping in Catskill Brewery
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/36467/
on the way up. Seems like a decent mix of beers and I have to admit the fanged raccoon labels are fun.
    Anybody been there? @IGaveYouPower ? @ColdOne ?

Definitely gonna have some time to bounce around outside of Geneva a bit too. But War Horse looks up my alley so will definitely be there. and Big aLICe looks good too. and some of those barrel aged versions at Berwery Ardennes look great! SO will prioritize those.

Will plan my departure towards New Hampshire next week while in Geneva, but Ill circle back here with updates as I go.

It's definitely worth a stop. The mainstays (Nightshine black lager, Ball Lightning pils, in particular) are still great. The foudre sours are usually draught only, so the brewery is the best place to try them. And everything else they've been coming up with lately are usually good to very good. Worth noting to travelers is that you can also get flights there.
