Some new barrel aged offerings currently available. They ship free within PA for orders over $50

Elle Reve- Apple Brandy Barrel Aged Belgian Quad

Hoop Driver- Apple Brandy and Bourbon Barrel Aged Scotch Ale

Plus a new batch of Dystopias!

One final bottle release for today’s Mardi Gras event, a Celebration of Big, Barrel Aged Beers… a new batch of our biggest beer ever created. Dystopias - Barrel Aged Malt Liquor, otherwise known as American Strong Ale. Our most complex creation. Batch number three is a new, intentional blend of stock aged for multiple years, in many types of barrels, utilizing a unique fermentation technique along the way, with multiple yeast strains and sugar additions. All these years spent in so many different barrels has allowed the beer to pick up so many unique nuances from the various spirits along the way, and the longer this beer ages - oxidation and the way it interplays with big beers like this comes more and more into focus. This is easily the smoothest batch yet right out of the bottle. This beer features a pleasing sweetness, with notes of chocolate covered raisins, caramel hard candies, molasses, fig, and tobacco. Clocking in at a very deceptive 20.1% ABV. Bottled still, drink at your leisure. This bottle is meant to be opened, sipped, corked up and drank again at a later date - treat it like a bottle of your favorite spirit.

Today I picked up a 4-pack of their DIPA collaboration with Troegs and Warwick Farm. Drinking one now - definitely has an old school feel to it - I like it

    This new beer sounds great:

"Our latest collab with our dear lager loving friends @brewerynovalis is now available and ready for you this holiday weekend! The perfect beer for around a campfire.

This beer represents a lost style in both European and American brewing traditions, the Kulmbacher started as a Franconian beer exported and ultimately being popular in the American market from somewhere between 1870 and 1950, American brewers would soon make their own versions and some reduced alcohol American versions were still being brewed into the 1980s (Blatz).

A hoppy dark lager that sits somewhere between Munich Dunkel and Bock in strength originally, it employed the use of a unique mashing technique known as “hopfenrösten” or hop roasting where hops are boiled as part of the mashing process prior to the main boil (via decoction vessel). We did an homage that is faithful to this style as very little information exists to the varied versions that were brewed. In our minds we approached this beer as if we were an American or German brewer of that time who was trying to make this style in America, utilizing the finest American and German ingredients we could get our hands on.

We present Ancient Alchemy, a 5.8% Dark Kulmbacher for your enjoyment and for a small taste of modern history."

I can report that this year's release of Lord Business is very tasty. Hopped this time with Mosiac, Cashmere, Cascade, and Chinook. I get a lot of stone fruit, white grape, and a dank finish. Clean bitterness, a touch boozy at 9% abv.

For those in PA - Free Will has just added a few of their previously released imperial stouts (in the 4-packs of small cans) up on their web store for shipping within the state.

I've had all of these before (Crooked Trails, Golden Smog, The Desert's Quiet) and I would guess they all use the Ralphius base, but they are given other names due to the various adjuncts.

I'm thinking of ordering from Free Will. I had Kragle for the first time last week, and it was OUTSTANDING. I'm def not crazy about the thought of purchasing the upcharged (IMO) 8.4 ounce format cans of BA stouts tho. What do you think about those?

I think they are worth it. I think Ralphius and the other Free Will stouts the last few years stand up with the very best of the style. Not too sweet, they haven't followed the pastry stout trend like Imprint has.

Crooked Trails is my favorite of the ones currently for sale.

I realized I never followed up after drinking Ancient Alchemy both on draft and cans. It was excellent, drank the last can in my fridge last night.

That is the one that is tempting me. I'm a sucker for Mexican style stouts, and I've yet to have a barrel aged version. Thanks for the input!

Good to know! I have a Kragle waiting for me in my fridge. I had it once before years ago at a social event. I'm looking forward to reviewing it.

The only 8.4oz format can that I have had is Breakfast Epiphanies, which I tried in March 2023. I enjoyed it very much. It's pretty much what one would expect from an imperial stout aged in bourbon maple syrup barrels with coffee. Very tasty and a bit hot, yet balanced. I purchased a 4-pack directly from the brewery, along with some other things, and a buddy and I split the order. They still offer free shipping for orders over $50. Yeah, that Crooked Trails piques my interest also! This other one - The Desert's Quiet, also looks tasty.

Selling the beer in this style of format is not cheap, but I do think that it's worth it. If you consider an alternative that few of us bat an eye at - spending $12 to $13 for a 500mL Goose Island Bourbon County Stout - then the price per ounce is actually pretty similar.

To follow up on my last post, I stumbled upon some of these Free Will barrel-aged stouts at my local beer store. To my surprise, they were offering them for sale in either 4-packs or single 8.4oz cans. My arm was twisted to pick up one of each of Crooked Trails, The Desert's Quiet, and Golden Smog. Price was not cheap but also not unreasonable at $6.99 plus tax for each can.

Personally, I much prefer these smaller options for such high ABV beers. I'm also more inclined to try one of each as opposed to deciding on just one or two (or none!).

I just posted my Kragle review. It's an excellent West Coast-Style IPA! Really cool to recognize that there is such a good example of the style available right here locally.

How is it that there are only two ratings posted of this beer?

It really is a great beer! I always enjoy one or two of these on draft when I catch a show at Sellersville.

It looks like there's two listings for this beer under Free Will's page. They changed the label several months ago. I don't think they changed the beer.

I'll see if I can submit a change to combine the listing. Cheers!

@dano213 I didn't see the separate listings but now there are 291 ratings.

I'll have to update by review from 2015, since the beer has bee tweaked for over the years for the better.
