Long Trail Maple & Whiskey Barrel Aged Stout.

    Serving temp: 45.4* to 54.3*F

Ebony pour with a 1/4" tan head, fades to a wisp. Light lacing. A nice aroma of maple, caramel, toffee, coffee & chocolate. Taste pretty much follows nose with vanilla. Bourbon comes through as it warms. Has a full body, light carbonation & a dry, astringent finish. This is a very good barrel aged stout.

A nice summer day. We had one of those pop-up thunderstorms yesterday with wind, thunder and lightning, and heavy rain. For about five minutes, then the sun's back out.
My new beer for today is Saturnalia, a Quad from OEC Brewing.
The beer is a medium brown color with some red highlights. Tiny tan head, no lace.
Aroma of caramel and dark fruit.
Taste of caramel, toffee, raisin. Late earthy hops.
Medium-bodied, alcohol not at all noticeable.
    Enjoyed it a lot.

Very clear, deep amber color; extremely lively carbonation; very fizzy head that immediately fades away, slowly coming back with a partial ring of foam and then an almost complete cap of very thin foam. Beautiful nose of apricot and honey. The taste combines a light malt base with raw oak overtones; delicate caramel; mild bitterness; light phenol presence; a touch boozy. Heavy body; smooth with a slight syrupy feel; a twinge of alcohol warmth.

This beer initially comes across a bit disappointing with its looks and taste, but given a bit of time in the glass, the appearance comes around nicely and the flavors, as the beer warms, become more complex and varied. The Brettanomyces Brux yeast doesn't produce a strong barnyard funk although there is a minor presence of brett in the taste. All in all, a rather tasty and unique beer, a fine anniversary beer offering.

Good afternoon, Weekenders! Not quite ready to return to that beast of a first beer (I capped the bottle and tossed it in the fridge), but I suppose I may be ready for some more Tree House:

    Haze 10th Anniversary

To celebrate 10 years of Haze, Tree House apparently sourced a very particular strain of Amarillo, along with a bit of Peacharine. Amarillo runs a bit dank, and I wonder how this particular take on the popular hop comes across. Despite the name, OG Haze isn't particularly dank.

Sure enough, like its namesake, this beer is still about the juice, first and foremost, featuring lush notes of mango, pineapple, papaya, and a splash of peach. There is, however, a noticeable dank and green herbal quality, restrained but present.

Frankly, it adds the kind of balanced complexity that I rarely get to experience in a NE IPA (ever since the precipitous decline in Galaxy hops, anyway), as they tend to be either all juicy notes, or super, super dank. Like the IBU wars that came earlier, it seems that the rallying cry is, "Give me more dank!"

For my palate, I literally cannot drink those dank bombs. This one, happily, is still palatable - and very, very tasty.

    4.22 / -4.7%

Yes, that's a pretty clear -rDev, but I'd take that with a pretty large grain of salt. Out of 22 ratings, only 3 have reviews, and two of them read thusly:

"Unfortunately, there is a strong diacetyl note that makes this tough going. A rare miss." 4.04

"Good, not great." (Entire review.) 4.29

So, yeah. If Tree House Stans think that good-but-not-great warrants a 4.29 (literally outstanding per our ratings, while very good is 3.75-3.99, and good is 3.50-3.74), and a literally flawed beer with diacetyl that is a rare miss and tough going warrants outstanding, as well, then I don't know what freaking site they think they're on. We are talking literally a full point of rating inflation over very clear site guidelines.

For me, I didn't find any flaws in this beer, and I found the balance remarkable (which is, well, why I remarked upon it, I suppose  ). I didn't find it as amazing as some Tree House IPAs, and although the dankness is restrained, it's still not something I enjoy with my current palate. I think this is absolutely an outstanding beer ... and, well, that's exactly where a 4.22 should sit.

If that makes me look like a harsher critic because the ratings are inflated from people who can write reviews, but not read the guidelines, then so be it. :stuck_out_tongue:

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Snulip glass canned on 7/17/24. Pours an attractive hazy yellow orange with a 2 plus finger sticky white head that leaves thin streaks of lace with nice retention. 4.25

Aroma is pineapple, mango, tangerine, passionfruit, and apricot. 4.25

Taste pineapple, mango, tangerine, passionfruit, and apricot. 4.25

Mouthfeel is about average for the style, soft gentle carbonation, not sticky or dry, and at 7% big flavor and goes down easy enough. 4.25

Overall this is good. Nothing special, but a nice NEIPA. 4.25

Full review linked above. Beer really looks great, and is an intense experience. I would have enjoyed a bit more with the IBUs and bitterness dialed back a bit, but rated for what this beer is sold as including the 90 IBU, and it's an overall enjoyable experience. Thank you so much for this one and the Head Hunters, which I will enjoy throughout the month.

Back tomorrow with a beer widely praised on the Great Lakes board that I haven't had a chance to enjoy.

    Cheers!

Cerveza Cancun - Playa Pale Ale

12oz can served in a footed pilsner glass. @WunderLlama sent it to me during NBS BIF #18. "CONS.PREF.31MAY2024"

Pours mostly clear, light amber, small fine head, light carbonation. Smell is light unripe peach and some pear (interesting), a little breadiness, maybe a little old hay.

Taste is pretty similar to the aroma, more of a bready sweetness is clear, old hay mostly is gone and replaced with an earthy bitterness.

Mouthfeel is on the light side of medium, nicely prickly despite appearance to the contrary. Overall, I suspect this is months past the manufacturer's "best by" date (guessing "cons.pref." means something similar to "consume before"), but this is still a serviceable pale ale. In its current state, I wouldn't go out of my way to get more, but would definitely consider it an acceptable option. If I had a chance to try it knowing it was fresh, I would go out of my way to do so.

Pours a lovely pale yellow color, clear; 1 1/2 finger thick head, white, sudsy. Fair smell; not much smoke; a bit woody, a bit grassy. Fantastic smoked lager flavor; beechwood smoked taste; very fine malt base flavor, bordering on caramel but not quite; sweet and toasted malts; low-key bitterness. Medium-heavy mouthfeel; smooth; delicate residual sugar stickiness.

The looks and smell are rather disappointing for this beer, but the taste and mouthfeel do make up for those shortcomings. The Bamburg smoked beer effect is very noticeable to those who are familiar with beers from that area (e.g., Brauerei Heller-Trum / Heller Bamburg). This isn't an 'in your face' smoked beer. It brings fair balance to the smoked beer game.

Revolution - Cuvee de Grace (2023)

12oz can served in a little Hoppin' Frog snulip. Dated 07-07-2023. @ovaltine sent it to me in NBS BIF #18.

Pours dark brown, almost black, impressive initial head production and near zero head retention. My glass has a thin ring around the rim and I'm watching the last island shrink from a cm diameter to nothing. Looks like there's a tiny bit of carbonation nucleating up underneath it to keep it barely alive. Smell is BOOZY. Barrel char, oak, rye spice, toffee, coffee, burnt caramel. Something nutty and bitter.

Taste is rich and sweet, lots of vanilla, butterscotch, some of the rye spice is there, sweetened coffee with creamer, char bitterness, milk chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate, and yes, the booze is there, but not nearly as dominant as in the aroma. Maybe some candied dates.

Mouthfeel is thick and still. Overall, very nice.

Cheers to @snaotheus for this Reuben's PNW Crush Hazy IPA, 7.0% ABV; 4.46 overall

Pours a hazed gold with 2+ fingers of eggshell colored head, pretty wild, the bubbles seem stuck to this glass. I hand washed all these glasses myself.. The weird bubble thing went away, stays effervescent throughout. Great head retention & lacing

S: Loads of citrus, some mango & guava notes.

T: A little dryness, pine, tangerine, a hint of cattyness & green melon up front. Pomelo, grapefruit, a little pine & dryness as this beer warms up. Finishes dry with grapefruit, woody hops & some white grapeskin

MF: Medium body, dialed back carbonation, good balance

    Easy to drink, good flavor

Exhibited a clear brownish mahogany hue; reddish mahogany in the glass; lively carbonation; decent head, thick, frothy, sticky. Fine malt nose; moderately sweet with a somewhat sharp caramel note. Great taste; caramel and crystal malt notes; toasted grain with a mildly sharp sweetness; minor hop bitterness presence; a speck of hop spiciness. Heavy mouthfeel; full sweetness on the palate; a touch of overall malt and alcohol warmth.

Another beer that somehow exceeds the sum of its parts. For me, it's the mouthfeel that I waver on between a 3.75 and 4.0 score. In this instance, I'm erring on the conservative side of things yet still find the beer overall impressive. I do love a good malt-forward beer.

My dinner beer is brought to you by the wondrous @WunderLlama - a beer that I didn’t know existed until he slammed my porch with it (and others!)
    Very Green 10th Anniversary
Poured for all the world looking like puréed apricot with an ivory colored head. Rings of lacing belie the notion it's an apricot smoothie.
The taste might have some apricot, but it definitely has grapefruit and pineapple with a little bit of lemon.
The feel is soft and, well, thicc. Almost chewy but not. I’d know more but I think I might have drank it too quickly, kept sipping to identify what I was tasting. So quaffable quality is high.
OA, good beer, very glad I got to try it.

My avatar hasn't changed in 10 years and I bought a 12 pack of this year's collaboration without a second thought.
SN Oktoberfest 2024 collaboration with Gutmann

12oz canned 07/02/24 poured into a mug at fridge temp 6% ABV. The beer pours bright golden amber with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and scattered bubbles. Minimal lacing. The aroma is mild with pale malt and a bit of woodsy hops. The taste is semisweet pale and mildly toasted malt with herbal / woodsy hop notes and a medium bitterness. The feel is thin bodied with average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Cleanly lagered. Overall, excellent beer. A tweener in my opinion that is too heavily toasted and hopped to be a fest, and to light in nature to fit in as a Marzen.

    Cheers all!

    500 ml. bottle.

Moderate pour yields a 1/2 inch very light pink head over a reddish pink, slightly hazy body with some lacing. Head is a ring after a bit that sticks around for even longer.

Nose of raspberries and blackberrries with a little funk.

Taste is all the fruit while slightly puckering and an earthy finish of berry bitterness.

Feel is as advertised with less than medium carbonation, but definitely not flat.
Not as full of a mouthfeel as previous WB offerings as a result, but no biggie.

Overall, a beer that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere!

...aroma is classic lager with grain, cereal out front with yeast, malt crusty bread and a little floral earthiness.
...taste is very similar to aroma, slight sweetness with a dry hop finish that lingers a long time.
..overall it is an excellent beer,I think most breweries increase the hop bite to appeal to most beer drinkers.i prefer it without the hop bite but it was still really nice[IMG]

Pours an effervescent mahogany/ebony with one finger of tan head. Some head retention & lacing, very viscous

S: Strawberries as soon as the can is cracked, some dark fruit as well, a little vanilla once warm, fades a little down the stretch

T: Strawberry & dark chocolate up front, a woody hops, & barrel notes up front. Vanilla, strawberries ( sweet ) & chocolate as this beer warms up, just a kiss of barrel. Finishes with a little dryness, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry & a kiss of Whisky
