Last Friday I started a thread about Nate Lanier blind tasting 5 beers he termed as Supermarket IPA. There has been some ‘spirited’ discussion in that thread with it’s fair share of ‘twists & turns’ on a variety of topics which leads to this thread.

I started a thread, which included a poll, on the topic of stovepipe cans a year ago. A fair number of folks (43.5%) replied they occasionally purchase beers in this format.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...-of-beer-in-stovepipe-19-2-ounce-cans.672036/

I personally do not buy many beers in these larger cans (maybe on a handful of occasions?) but an IPA that I do enjoy drinking in 12/16 ounce cans is Fiddlehead IPA. I suppose if I ever saw this beer in a stovepipe I would consider buying one.

Do you have a favorite IPA that comes in the stovepipe (19.2 ounce) can format?

    Cheers!

P.S. From last year's thread discussion it seems that the stovepipe can is popular at retailers like convenience stores & gas stations.

I had Two Hearted and RPM in stovepipe cans pretty recently—they tasted about the same as they do from any other receptacle

Sip of Sunshine for the win.

I can get SoS stovepipes for $4.49 while the 4x16oz goes for $18.49 at the same retailer.

@JackHorzempa I regularly see Fiddlehead's IPA, Second Fiddle and Imperial IPA in the Philly burbs. Hope you run into some.

Yep, all of those beers are available at my local beer retailers.

My last purchase of Fiddlehead IPA was a 12-pack of 12 ounce cans at my local (less than a mile from me) Beer Distributor.

    Cheers!

P.S. I would consider purchasing a stovepipe of SoS since I am a fan of that beer as well! :beers:

Sorry...clarification. I see stovepipes of those beers pretty regularly.

And they can be readily available to me as well but I generally do no look at the refrigerators of singles at my local beer retailers.

I made mention of my local Beer Distributor above but I never look at their singles refrigerators since I am a six-pack (and on occasion 4-pack) kind of guy. For me the optimum format is a six-pack (sometimes 12-pack) of 12 ounce cans. I simply don't look for singles. I made mention of this in the OP of the thread I started last year:

"This is a format that is just not of interest to me so I basically just do not ‘see’ these beers."

    Cheers!

I rarely see anything except Voodoo Ranger in those large format cans. I occasionally run across a huge Dale's, which is my personal pick. Great Divide's Hercules is apparently in those, although I haven't had one in forever. If they haven't overhauled the recipe, it's probably a good choice. Breck's new Ridge Runner is probably due to be in that format. Most of their other items are, and beer is terrific.
In terms of the format itself, I rarely have a reason to buy it. It's basically only for concerts and casinos IMO. Otherwise, why not just get smaller cans that aren't going to be warm by the time you're halfway finished?

Fresh 90-Minute stovepipes can't be beat. But locally, West Sixth IPA is put out in stovepipes and I'm not sure there's more IBU in a stovepipe available.

I enjoyed drinking that beer at the Lexington taproom last fall. A very tasty beer!

    Cheers!

I take notice when Safeway does 2 Stone IPA Stovepipes for $6. I pick up singles of Lags IPA & Little Sumpin' as well as Fresh Squeezed to mix in with a mostly lager beer diet. I have not seen FW Union Jack in this format only their Hypnosis (?) IPA which is pretty good.

To summarize, not favorite I grab what looks good at the moment and rotate.

SNPA & Torpedo are still sold in the 16oz size.

I learned my lesson to stay away from the IIIPAs that can be found be exercising my curiosity with a purchase of Redhook's Big Ballard Imperial IPA. :-1:

I just got back from doing some grocery shopping at my local Wegmans supermarket and I made it a point to look at the refrigerator where they store the stovepipe cans and I was surprised to see over 20 brands of IPA. I noticed Sip of Sunshine and I said to myself “If that can is fresh, I will buy one”. I took it out and flipped it over to see that it was canned July 9th and I promptly placed that can in the cart next to the milk.

Stovepipe cans are not my preferred format but…

    Cheers!

With stovepipes I get Arrogant Bastard and 90 Minute a lot, but my favorite is Tonewood Fuego.

Stovepipes are hotel room beers for me. 90 Minute is my preferred.

Man from what I’ve read this far, Headhunter and SOS is splitting hairs for me and both are great to find fresh. I’ve scored a fresh Zombie Dust once in a local store but I have not seen them anywhere local since that one time. Also I’ve seen Lawson’s Little Sip recently in southern PA.

I will give another vote for Head Hunter as my go too stovepipe.
Honorable mention go to Stone, I actually think it has more hop bite out of the big cans.

Are you a fan of the 'big brother' Sip of Sunshine?

Was Swami's when I lived in California. It was always fresh, available at my corner bodega on Venice Beach, and cheaper than other stovepipes that were often too old (Stone, Bell's, etc).
