The other night I tried a birrifico indipendente progressive barleywine ale but, it was many years past its best by and no idea what conditions it’s been through. It wasn’t drinkable though I did feel like I caught glimpses of the very fine beer it should have been. Anyways I remedied it with a third coast old ale that did the shit.

    Then it was this:

Too dark picture of Wabasha brewing Night Queen - bourbon barrel aged barley wine
This still struck me as apple-y up front but then all bourbon. But just much more enjoyable than the last go around with it. Really good.

    But tonight,

Yep. This was what I wanted tonight. Hot buttered shitfacery, this is the propers.

Tree House: Tree of Fortitude. Blend 14-22 month aged barleywines, conditioned on vanilla, coconut and lime. Tree House clientele are strange. This has been available for 11 months now, and is my 3rd bottle purchase overall. After a year in the bottle I can still get all the adjuncts (TH does not typically go very heavy handed on them), even the lime. I would have kept it another year, but citrus and coconut make me nervous when it comes to long term aging. Maybe it’s fine, but the price isn’t exactly low for these, so I don’t want to risk it. Lots of butterscotch coming through now. It makes me want their standard barrel aged barleywines, which have been rare lately. Those seem to move much faster for good reason. They’re on the same level as Revolution’s lineup for sure imo

Too bad Valkyrie is no more, beause that would be the perfect excuse to head over to Wisconisn. I know my crew will be doing a trip over there to get it in October. It might well be to the Lazy Monk.

Now this beer that @snaotheus sent me is just on fire. It was just delicious as heck.

From a 16oz can with no date on the can, though "Boy Howdy! It's Huntin' Time" printed on the bottom of the can. I did let it warm up a bit before opening.

This is a dark brown pouring beer. I was surprised that there was a 1 1/2 finger tan head that lasted a long time considering the ABV. There's no lacing on the glass as the head disappears.
The aroma is so full of plum, raisin and fig. There's also hints of vanilla, caramel and toffee in this beer.
Taste - Very rich flavored. I just get a great hit of dark fruit right away. This flavor doesn't fade, but is added to by the caramel, toffee and vanilla. There's a slight bitterness on the finish of this beer.
The body is quite full and thick. There's a faint bubbly feeling to this beer. There's a very slight burn to this beer that tells you to take your time with it.
I am very impressed with this beer. A delicious beer of this style, and a pleasure to try.

Double Barrel Liminal Space from Temporal Artisan Ales in Vancouver, British Columbia. A blend of munichwines aged in Buffalo Trace bourbon and Brazilian amburana barrels. Then aged in a single Buffalo Trace barrel for 22 months. 14% ABV and one of 400 bottles.

Poured from a bottle at fridge temp. Pours a very dark brown with a tiny layer of light brown head. The nose is bloody amazing. The amburana comes through immediately, which makes me very happy as I LOVE amburana wood. Cinnamon, bourbon, toffee, maple, clove, and vanilla.

The taste is incredible. As with the nose, the amburana punches first. Huge notes of fig, toffee, cinnamon roll (from the amburana), bourbon, vanilla, raisins, brown sugar, and a bit of chocolate. Wow.

There are a few amazing things about this beer. First, it's a munichwine but it isn't too sweet (not even close). The intensity and breadth of flavor that came without any adjuncts is amazing. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a cinnamon/bourbon mix. Just a lovely beer. I am blown away right now.

    From last night. Awesome stuff!

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a nice dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is amazing. Toffee, vanilla, brandy, pears, apricots, and slight maple. The toffee is super intense and I love it.

The taste is also fantastic. Tons of caramel, vanilla, peaches, vanilla, maple, brown sugar, and a slight nutty note. Lovely.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and the aftertaste is a wonderful caramel candy.

And drinking this now. Straight Jacket from 2021. I definitely like this, but it's just not my favorite. Quite sweet. Almost tastes like a different barrel than bourbon. Sweet toffee, a bit of marmalade, strawberries, vanilla, and almost a sour patch kid taste. Age hasn't really done anything to this one.

Hell yeah Tim, peaches and barleywine belong together:heart_eyes: I loved that one!

Looking forward to BL's banana b-wine...I think. I passed on the raspberry and cream cheese one.

I tried the raspberry and cream cheese one the other day and I don't recommend it. Way to sweet - almost like raspberry juice. Flash Point (the bananas foster BW) is fantastic. I'm happy to send you a bottle if you would like! Cheers!

I've found SJ does not improve with age. Fresher is better with that one. Seems pretty surprising, but that's just how it seems to be

Bruno from Machine House in Seattle. Just grabbed this from Belmont Station in Portland tonight! This is a barleywine brewed with maris otter and golden promise malts, aged in Westland whiskey barrels for 12 months and bottle conditioned for very light carbonation (basically still). Bottled November 2022. Comes in at 13% ABV.

Poured at just warmer than fridge temp. As expected, this pours basically still. No head. Dark muddy brown. The nose is amazing. Rich toffee, prunes, figs, maple doughnut, vanilla, and bourbon. The taste....oh the taste. Lovely. Tons of toffee, a touch of smoke, light coffee, maple, walnuts, figs, oaky bitterness, boozy bourbon, and a hint of black licorice. So dang good. I really love the intensity of flavors that emerge from a still barleywine.

I have a feeling @DIM and @beergoot would love this one! Might have to grab a couple more on my way back through Portland next week!
